Estimating Clearing Costs Of A Mini Tractor by ruggie: 8:22pm On Dec 07, 2020
I am trying to figure out if importing one mini-tractor for my farm would be a worthwhile endeavor.
Can any one in the house help provide an estimate as to what the clearing cost would be for a mini-tractor similar to the one below ?
Thanks in advance.

The cheaper way is to approach shipping agents who will add your own package inside a whole large container. They usually charge by cbm (cubic meter). Your mini tractor is not a vehicle since it comes splitted, and it's cheap. If it comes already assemblied, then all import duties of vehicles will be applicable. But since it's in a box and its splitted, the size of the box will be used as long as it is added with other goods in a container. So, the cheaper way is not to try import it by yourself, but add it to goods in a large container via a shipping agent. The agent will clear it, and you just pay him. But if you need any particular paper, make sure you inform your importer ahead.

Look at the pictures below. These are two mini vans in Lagos. The upper kinds come in already assemblied, and all the costs of importation are used. But the second kinds comes in boxes. Importers usually remove all the tyres, cut the roofs to show they arent to br cleared as vehicles, remove all the accessories and pack all in boxes. Then, they arrange them back in Lagos. That's a way to beat the cost. However, try to know the licenses and papers you need, so that in future when you want to sell it, or use it as a collateral, or even drive it from one point to another and you have to ride on a road, you are safe from the hands of those useless police, VIO, roadsafety, etc.

Thank you for the information. This has opened my eyes a bit wider as to additional things I need to consider. It is not an estimate, but it will definitely make my analysis better. Looks like it is time to put a spreadsheet together, find a shipping agent and start laying things out.
