Barcelona continue to struggling under Ronald Koeman.

It is a clear fact that Barcelona have not been at their best for quite a while now and it looks like they are on their way to hit rock bottom this season. With four losses already in the league so far and with the disappointing performance in the 3-0 loss against Juventus this week, the Catalan giants are showing no sign of improvement or hope.

After the 8-2 Bayern Munich trashing in last year’s Champions League campaign along with the major Lionel Messi saga, things were finally taking a positive turn for the Blaugranas. Youngsters like Riqui Puig and Ansu Fati were seen dominating opponents while struggling stars like Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele and Martin Braithwaite showed signs of improvement.

Things, however, only went downhill from there after close to the entire Barca defense got sidelined due to various injuries. Gerard Pique, Ronald Araujo, and Samuel Umtiti all missing for a major duration of the campaign. Barca B’s Óscar Mingueza got the opportunity to take over Pique’s role and while the youngster showed immense potential, his performance against Cadiz raised some questions. The 21-year-old made many mistakes while also looking uncomfortable on the ball.

Meanwhile, regular Clement Lenglet was struggling to keep up with the opposition without Pique’s leadership and support. The defense was not the only concern for the Catalans as Ansu Fati picked up a long-term injury against Real Betis, while Dembele was sidelined once again with a hamstring issue.

Having said that, the club cannot simply blame their disappointing performances on injuries, and thus here are three reasons why Barcelona are struggling this season.

Financial Problems at Barcelona
Blaugrana have had major financial problems since the coronavirus pandemic hit the world. The problems were in such a negative state that the club had to offload players in masses in order to balance the books and free up wages. The horrible money problems have led the club to reach an impasse where they had to sell players in order to afford any new signings. There is no extra source of money.

However, after the resignation of Josep Maria Bartomeu, a new board is set to take over which may improve the financial conditions of the club, given that the current set of players have agreed to a wage-cut.

Most Pivotal Players Sold
The La Liga giants sold Luis Suarez to Atletico Madrid and failed to get a replacement for him. They sold Arthur Melo to Juventus in exchange of Miralem Pjanic which is an extremely poor deal as they exchanged a talented 24-year-old with an ageing midfielder.

They also sold Arturo Vidal to Inter Milan, Nelson Semedo to Nuno’s Wolverhampton wanderers and club veteran Ivan Rakitic back to his former club Sevilla. While all these players’ sales allowed Barca to recover their financial strength, not being able to replace them with reliable and consistent reinforcements is costing the club heavily.

While youngsters like Pedri, Francisco Trincao, and Ronald Araujo are getting ample time under Koeman, they are yet to fully develop and the overall squad is lacking consistancy.

Lack of Tactics

Koeman looks clueless at times just like during his tenures at Everton and Southampton. He seems tactically inept. The team tends to keep possession throughout the game without having a major impact. The movements look repeated and hardly anything creative comes out. The number of players that the Blaugrana sold, they failed to land proper replacements as they could not afford it due to the financial problems.

However Koeman looks to have been poor on man management as he’s keeping talents like Riqui Puig on the bench. Another major flaw of the former Netherland boss is him being adament about the 4-2-3-1 formation when it is clear that the tactic isn’t working at times with the current set of players.

These problems are not going to go away anytime soon as the team is in a process of a complete transition. Without financial improvement there will not be any new signings, atleast big names. Lionel Messi too may well be out of the club soon as the 33-year-old is heavily linked to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and Thomas Tuchel’s Paris Saint-Germain as his contract nears it’s end.

DTS ur opinion n its d same way all barca fans av thier. own reasons for barca bad form bt the only point I agree with is dt number 1.
that number 2 isn't a point bcox barca are known for breeding stars n players like suarez n vidal are in thier late 30's n are short term plans
2..somedo was sold bcoz he lacked consistency n he do flop on big occasion n barca cnt forgive him after wat Bayern davis did to him..
3..Arthur was once d nxt big tin in barca bt he had fitness issues during d second half of the league dt made a young player not able to play full complete 90mins n was swapped with pjanic for.financial gains..
4..koman hands are tied n cnt perform magic with that squad, barca av a weak squad and are affected by injuries (fati, pique n roberto) they CNT sign key players n dey keep depending on d tired messi, if barca sign a player like neyma, koman would av less to wori about
5..even if barca get pep assisted by klopp, this barca squad wud still suffer...i jus wonder wat nxt if messi decides to leave..

La liga no bẹ noise maker league like Epl. All you have in Epl is noise and money. Quality football resides in Spain.

Man United that are not up to Barca ought to get relegated after first round of league but they made it to third.

If that is what to go by, La liga is better in quality football than Epl.
Liverpool 99
Man City 73
10/20
Man City 100
Liverpool 72
2017/18
A league where two teams decides not to lose nor draw for 21 league matches
A league where Arsenal gone undefeated for a whole season and more.
Is that one competitive as you claim?

The only point you mentioned about laliga is three horse race and but so be it asonv as they do the same in Uefa Champions league where they won 6 out of possible ten, two to Germany, two to you, epl.
Epl are just a level above Seria A in quality.

Imagine the way you stars in epl struggle I think Spain. Rubbish!
Money richlist, they have been there in top three for decades.

Most Pivotal Players Sold

That is the number one reason.
Messi alone cannot do it, a tree doesn't make a forest.

On a second thought,
Arsenal FC bought many players in the past 2 seasons, spending the highest money in their history, but this is the worst start in a season for them in almost 40 years.

Irony of life!

The fvck

Niggarr!!

OP is still a JJC to football analysis. You need to level up and not add sentiments to your tepid article by the way.

Barcelona are where they at because of the financial mess caused by the pandemic and nothing else. 2 and 3 are far stretched.

They had to reduce the wage bill and as a result there was some collateral damages like in the case of Suarez, Rakitic and Vidal. The trio I thought were givivg minimal sporty inputs, all due respect, they had to be moved on.

No 3 is preposterous, coming at Koeman for his tactical know-how is totally unacceptable. Playing 2 games in a week will work the footballers and he has had to resort to rotation. All them players cant deliver like Messi consistently. And he has had to deal with strings of injuries to key players. Pique, Fati, Stegen at a time, Dembele and the list is endless.

A summer devoid of meaningful transfer bar the arrival of Dest, Semedo's going away had to fund that move btw.

Koeman's team is a work in progress, you'd have to wait till mid-season to start judging his work. Its too early. Your write-up is too critical of him. I must admit he's got to deal with a lot of pressures lately likewise other managers of big teams. Madrid, United, Juventus, Arsenal, City managers have had to deal with pressures at a time or are dealing with one currently.

These are tough times my niggarr!! You need to level up.

I said what I said.

I believe Barcelona would bounce back
Messi's heart doesn't seem to be in the team fully like before, maybe he is still yet to recover from previous drama

Number one major problem is the coach
This man lacks tactics
Then the selling off of major players is really a big problem

It's a time to rebuild which will start with letting Messi leave badly enough they won't recoup any fee on Messi head. Secondly they lost it with the way they handle their la Mercia team.

NB.... Football is changing almost all big team is feeling the heat.

You forgot to include the Messi Dilemma.
