Why not all import ...tax it 50% to 100% ...the price of rice would drop to around 25k to 30k ...you can use the revenue gained yo found rice improved seeds development and pesticide research .....in 5 years we can match thailand in yeild ...import would die naturally

Must we produce rice? At whose expense is the closing of border for local rice to thrive? The ordinary Nigerians who are now buying a bag of stone filled local rice for the price of two bags of Tai brand parboiled rice? Who is fooling who here. Government should simply remove its hands from rice, allow whoever want to import rice to source for his forex from wherever source and import. People are hungry and cost of food rising because our local production cannot cater for us all.

We all eat bread and other pastries made from flour which is produced from wheat, I doubt if we have the comparative advantage in production of wheat. Why is importation of wheat allowed? Because we lack the capacity to produce it sufficient quantity and we must eat. Why is government pretending that we have capacity to produce rice when immediately it banned the imputation of rice, local rice jumped up by more than 400% per 50kg bag and you don't want hunger in the land. The solution is simple, don't give forex for rice importation. Create a system where there is good competition between the local rice and foreign rice so that those who can afford foreign rice eat it while decongesting the demand for local rice which has seen the price increase beyond the reach of ordinary Nigerians. Who says that rice import from Benin Republic into Nigeria cannot be taxed? Benin Republic is dumping its rice import into Nigeria because government went into rice business by making its import into Nigeria illegal while not having any means of feeding Nigerians with its brand of local rice. Once u allow direct import of rice into Nigeria, Benin Republic will be out of business, simple[/s]

Let me give you small education. Nigeria has NEVER banned importation of rice. It only restricted import to sea ports borders ONLY. y
Why do people go to imports through Benin you may ask. Benin charges low duty on imports, to encourage imports, since that is their main source of Fx. They in turn re export to Nigeria paying no duty (taking advantage of free trade in WA.
Nigeria cannot and will not lower rates just to compete with Benin. It is not right. Benin will just continue to lower and lower the rates and Nigeria will eventually loose out. Best thing to do was what the government did.
