If You've Not Prayed To The Point You Can't Stop, You've Not Started Praying

You're only just warming up just like it is before a football match. But when you can't stop is when you've actually started praying or playing the real match in a footballing sense, which is the essence of warming up.

That's something I learnt about prayer early on, when I started taking prayer seriously. After I had repented and started to draw closer to God, I found it very difficult to pray for long. I don't think I could pray for more than five minutes.

But as I continued, I noticed that the duration of my prayer gradually began to increase. And at a point I could pray up to thirty minutes. But something happened one day as I kept on praying on a daily basis. I noticed that while I was praying, that I had prayed for over an hour, but despite that I had surpassed the time I wanted to pray, I just couldn't stop, i didn't feel like stopping but wanted to still continue for as long as possible.

That's what happens when the spirit has taken over someone's prayer because the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.

And prayer is a spiritual exercise so when you still feel weak and feel like stopping during prayer, it means your flesh was still in control, not your spirit. Therefore you've not really started praying because prayer was meant to give your spirit which was willing more control over your actions. So if you're still feeling weak while praying, it then means the purpose you're praying had not been achieved, so you don't stop until you can't stop.

The disciples of Christ had prayed a while in the garden of Gethsemane after Jesus had told them to watch and pray with Him, but when Jesus came and found them sleeping He yet said:

"What, could ye not watch with me one hour?
Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." {Matthew 26:40-41}

So despite that they had prayed for a while, to Jesus, they had not even started praying, as their prayer had not gotten the point where their spirit which was willing had assumed control over their prayer, so that they couldn't stop praying.

Hence Jesus yet told them to watch and pray that they enter not into temptation because what they they had done was just warm up not pray, and warming up was not able make them not enter into temptation, only prayer could.

Therefore ensure that you don't just stop at warming up, but actually start praying because that's the whole essence of the warmup.

Prayer comes from the heart not the mouth. The mouth only expresses what was said by the heart in prayer.

So even if the prayer from your heart isn't expressed by your mouth, it doesn't mean you're not praying, because God listens to the words of the heart not mouth and lips.

Hence try and pray how you do more often. That's what I'd advice.
