Good to see that the airport is taking shape. However, trees and flowers cost relatively little to plant but can help to make the airport grandiose. It takes a while for trees and flowers to grow too and that's why it is important to start planting them now according to the master plan.

In Igboland, we are lucky to have cities and towns that keep evolving as time goes by unlike other parts of Nigeria or even Africa where slums constitute a significant part of their cities. However, our biggest problem is that government has failed to keep pace with urbanization. You will see areas with fine houses lining up the streets yet terrible roads, open drains and zero aesthetics.

State governments should even pass a law that any house with spaces must either plant grass on it or use gravel to cover the red earth. We live in a globalized world and perception is very important.

Nothing but the truth. Individual although not perfect have done exceptionally well both home and diaspora to bring some wealth and build a mansion or small structure but government from day one has been a failure! How can you see streets flooded with mansions but the government can not build world class road to enable the state to turn into a finest world location. Instead they will spend money on special advisers and local cabal to loot the money on expenses. 2021 we must get it right! If not for this airport we would really be sad because 8 yrs and nothing to show. I was even dissapointed they gave idc contract for taxiway after that rubbish they built as 3 flyovers in awka. Our people are our problem. Not Buhari. Not the North but our own.

Obiano should Dualize Nkwelle to 3-3 road...what is all this... That part of the state is growing massively and is a new face of Onitsha... Obiano failed woefully..... The commissioner under the ministry of environment should pls play their role on our environment and major roads..employ road sweepers to sweep out those sand by the road side...Nnewi need dual lane too..

To understand the dark hatred and contempt-filled mindset of Mktinsight for Anambra is to look at his half clever deceits. When he wants to belittle Anambra accomplishments such as to compare Anambra airport terminal size, he uses the biggest airport terminals in the world such as London Heathrow or New York's JFK. But when he wants to compare where Anambra is developmentally, he points to places that are not even as developed as Abakaliki just to undermine the entire state.

While i have nothing against Kisumu, we should not try to pass it off as a standard that should be copied. Kisumu harbors the biggest slum in Kenya. Infact if you look at the satellite image of Kisumu, you will see that the slum area cover greater than 70% of the city. While the Kisumu governor has continued to vastly improve the city, get more international airlines to use the Kisumu International airport, it is still a far cry from what should be touted as an example to copy. If Anambra wants examples of African cities to copy, it will be Durban, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, etc.

Mktinsight stop deriding yourself suggesting Kisumu or Bamenda as places that are better than Anambra in your silly warped mind.

grin grin grin grin grin.....and how does all these crap about Addis Ababa rail or Ghana airport in these African capital cities BUILT BY THEIR FEDERAL GOVERNMENTS concern Anambra STATE? In sane countries, it is their Federal Govt. that will be building the Anambra intl. airport to boost commerce in those countries the same way the Nigerian FG built ALL airports in northern Nigeria to boost Hajj operations ( EXCEPT Katsina airport).

To begin with, Anambra isn't the capital of Nigeria. So you are preaching to the choir. Please exit the thread and go to Nigerian threads where such would be appropriate to plead that Abuja or Lagos airport should come to par with Kotoka Intl. airport.

It is also hilarious that you are posting the Addis Ababa rail here. To begin with, railways are in the "exclusive list" in Nigeria's constitution where state governments are banned to build railways. Again, if you were sincere, you would be agitating that the silly 1999 constitution that bans states from building critical infrastructure be taken town. But you would not do that because the truth is that you truly don't want to see development in Anambra. You just want to hide under irrational excuses that does not make sense to justify why you would never applaud the state for truly punching above its weight.

Even rich states like mine took more that 8 years under Uduaghan to build an airport! Obiano is well on track to repeat the feat in less than 2 years! Mind you Anambra does not even see up to 50% of the revenue available to Delta state. Not to mention others such as Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, katsina, Rivers, Akwa Ibom etc that enjoy gigantic federal allocation. The only state that is punching above its weight like Anambra is Ebonyi.

Your bitterness and wicked heart towards Anambra and her people will continue to bring you frustration in life because you truly can't do a thing against anyone God has blessed. That is why Nigeria is in such tattered state because instead of supporting Igbos to build a strong Nigeria, they have concentrated on how to marginalize Igbos and under develop Nigeria in the process. What i love about that situation is that in the end, they will all wake up someday and realize that as they spent precious time meeting to develop wicked plans & policies against Igbos, the Igbos themselves did not waste their own time on planning evil for them. Instead the Igbos busied themselves with how to develop themselves. In the end, when they are jealous and call Igbos names for their achievements, they forget they spent their own time thinking and plotting evil while the Igboman spent his own time on how to better himself. Just like you right now, i would advise you to use your time better on what is beneficial for your state. Osun state needs your power of research to tell them who to copy in order to come out of their financial mess. Than coming here with all sorts of half clever deceit that end up fooling nobody. You are wasting your time and using your talent for evil.

BTW, i hope you have seen the picture showing the asphalting of the airport 3.7 KM runway in progress. If you haven't seen it, let me post it again for you. So keep eating out your heart.

This is 2021 Aguleri Ofala festival.

Brief history of Ofala festival:

The Ofala Festival is an annual ceremony practiced by Igbo people, particularly the indigenes of Onitsha, Umueri, Umuoji and other neighboring communities such as Aguleri, Nnewi and Ukpo in Dunukofia Local Government Area.

It serves as a rites of renewal of the king or Igwe or Obi and it is similar to the Igue festival in Benin and the Ine, Osi or Ogbanigbe Festival in many mid-West Igbo communities of Nigeria. The term ofala, is derived from two Igbo words - ọfọ (English: authority) and ala (English: land).

The festival is celebrated within two days mostly in October by the Obi (English: king) and is a customary obligation that must be performed every couple of years without fail

The thing is the Igbo towns and cities are newer than those from other parts of the country. That's why you see newer building in Enugu or owerri than you would see in Ibadan for example. The only down side is that our government are some of the worse in the country, so you don't get befitting roads for these new houses. Just imagine a julius berger constructed roads in Owerri, Awka or Onitsha for example.

I think limited lands available for development is partly the reason for having evolving cities and towns. Why I said so is because cities like Onitsha, Enugu and Aba have sections especially in their "town" areas that are over hundred years old yet those sections now have modern looking houses. However, Ado Ekiti and Akure are all relatively new cities yet you will still find more ghetto looking settlements than you will find in say Aba or Onitsha that are probably older. In Aba for instance, in places like Azikiwe road, Asa road, Ehi road etc. you will see people buying bungalows or one storey buildings only to demolish them and build 4 or 5 storeys. In the 1980's bungalows and one storeys we're common but now 4 and 5 storeys are envogue. Maybe, in 2050's 7 and 8 storeys will be the norm. If only our state governors are up and doing, we would be having the best cities in Nigeria.

Most Igbo towns are new and i don't think there's any that is up to 100 years oold as a town. What we had were villages and hamlets. For instance, what was known as Enugu during the colonial times was what is today known as Ogui and it was still a village with very few modern building as at then. No matter how old a building in igboland is, it can't be older than building that you will have in say Benin, kano or Ibada.

But i also agree with your argument that Igbos tend to demolish older buildings in favour of new ones. The same thing cannot really be done in some parts of Ibadan for example, because you can have an entire town section that are very old and have existed for over 100 years.

And as far as land is concerned, this is the time for Igboland to favour upward development because we have limited land as it is and need to start building sky scrapers or atleast more modern versions of what we have in Onitsha.

True, another reason is that the airport and it's vicinity would be subject to vibrations and other forces.Steel structures is best suitable to absorb such stress and is still considerably cheaper than reinforced concrete (that would handle such force). Also it makes construction faster.
Even though I see agents of envy, hate etc active on most igbo threads, am much pleased that we are witnessing better representation across the East and most importantly, our people are very much investing home.
I believe every other thing we clamour for- tree lined roads, steady power, more ethnic integration, well planned cities and industrialization would come in time.

The part in bold is not absolutely factual. In 1950, the population of Onitsha was 74,000 while that of Abeokuta was 79,000. Now, can you compare the skyline of both cities? Onitsha has continued to evolve and now has a decent skyline while Abeokuta has stagnated. In the East, we demolish older and smaller houses to build bigger ones and that's why drone pictures of Eastern cities always tend to be more beautiful than its counterparts in the West.

It would have been nice to see a pic of both cities in 1950. I can assure you that Abeokuta was more developed than Onitsha during the colonial days but the reverse is the case today. So, it's not necessarily because we demolish older houses in favour of new ones but because we build houses in places where there were never any houses.

Abeokuta wasn't more developed than Onitsha in the 1950's.
First and second pictures, Onitsha in the 1950/60's. Second and third pictures, Abeokuta although I can't say exactly when they were taken but they're apparently old too but incidentaly they don't look much different with current pictures of Abeokuta.

You can also compare Ijebu Ode (26,220 in 1950) to Aba (48,488 in 1950). Note that Aba was almost double the population of Ijebu Ode in 1950 but I bet you that Ijebu currently has far more ghetto settlements and dilapidated buildings than Aba. You can also compare Ado Ekiti (20,000 in 1950) to Umuahia (13,255 in 1950) you will still get similar results.

The bottom line is that Eastern cities keep evolving while Western cities are stagnated, that's the reality sentiments aside.

In the west they consider those old buildings to be their heritage and they’re not wrong they don’t even need to replace the roof, if they just paint and maintain the buildings and provide basic amenities to them, then the city could easily become like old Dubai or old Paris, where people visit just to see the architecture

Lol, you're comparing apples with oranges. Are you aware that London and indeed most cities in Europe are ancient? Are you aware that most parts of London have been demolished over the years to give way for modern buildings?

All over the world, cities evolve and older buildings will give way to modern ones while only a small fraction may retain the relics to serve as heritage or tourist attraction. ONLY STAGNATED CITIES REMAIN THE SAME.
