I just left a supermarket somewhere in Lagos now and I cannot believe what happened.

The madam (of Yoruba tribe) was warning her staff at the counter not to speak Igbo with anyone including the customer she was conversing with. I was stunned at how irate she was, almost yelling that “she would not tolerate it”.

I then asked her why it was a problem since Yorubas spoke Yoruba all the time even within the office environment. This was her reply-

“No that is wrong, it is not SOCIALLY acceptable for both of them to speak Igbo publicly”, I then asked again why not, she was so furious…saying it may make a customer think they are gossiping… Each time she gave a response, she got even more angry. At this point the girl stopped and the customer walked away.

My question to Igbos in Lagos, is this a common occurrence where you live? Have you ever been berated for speaking your language in public?

if u no like wetin d madam talk, nah ur problem b dat.... Lagos nah Yoruba land....make una all go where una come from if u are not okay with that......silly talk.

U wan make dem negotiate ur price in ur presence and u no go get clue

Lagos is a Yoruba territory. Yoruba language is the ligua-franca along side English. It is generally considered rude to speak any far off language on foreign soil. A problem that many find irritating about Nigerians abroad.

As a business inclined person, if your staff speaks a language you don't understand with a customer, will you allow that? They will just negotiate and sell you join. Don't look at it from a tribalistic point of view but from communication, danger of language barrier and business view

Communicating with a customer in language your boss do not understand may trigger fear of you conniving with the customer to cheat the business hence the boss is been careful

In computer village most fraud are as a result of language barrier, this computer village guys will communicate in igbo, duped you in igbo, and collect change in Igbo while you sheepilie smile and nod your head


Same thing for hausa soldier, if you are fighting with an hausa and an hausa soldier intervene if you don't understand their language you are done for

Yoruba too have a way of scheming out non Yoruba speakers

In most cooperate establishment you are not expect to communicate in vernacular

Yorubas naturally have low self esteem.

I noticed that they always become paranoid when two Igbos are conversing in their language. I thought this only happens in the East and SW but I was shocked to notice the same thing in the North.

They always think others are back stabbers like them.

If you think I am lying, if you are Igbo, go with another Igbo person to where Yorubas are.

Start a conversation with them and flow with them in Yoruba. Now ask your Igbo friend about his friend in Igbo and speak Igbo with him for about 1 minute without minding your Yoruba friends.

Have a hearty laughter with your Igbo friend.

Watch the yorubas there carefully. You will notice them having paranaoia

Same way igbos feel uncomfortable when they hear a Yoruba speak in igboland it's a common thing if u no like am leave lagos we no force una

I can't agree less from a business perspective owned by Yoruba person or any tribe for your employee to converse in language you know not.

There is nothing tribalistic about what the OP narrated. Has anyone ever stopped an Igbo person from speaking their language in their shop?
