Nigerians Defend Osinbajo Against Comparison With US VP Pence by Ebunoluwa2020(op): 5:07am On Jan 09, 2021
Following opposition criticisms on Vice President Yemi Osinbajo with a controversial comparison with US Vice President Mike Pence, Nigerians on social media have come out in defence of the VP Osinbajo.

This comes as US VP Pence on Wednesday publicly broke with President Donald Trump, saying he cannot submit to Trump’s demands for him to overthrow the results of the 2020 US election after Joe Biden won more popular and electoral college votes than Trump. On Thursday, the US Electoral College also confirmed Biden as the winner of the US presidential election.

Also Thursday, Trump’s supporters stormed the US Capitol Hill complex, which many have condemned and described as a shameful day for America’s democracy. “Yesterday the president of the United States incited an armed insurrection against America,” US Speaker Nancy Pelosi said.

Many Nigerians on social media have noted that this has never been the case in Nigeria under President Buhari. They added that the comparison between Pence’s action and Trump and Osinbajo in relation to Buhari was partisan and not based on facts, especially as the issue was based on allegiance to the US constitution and not personal biases or loyalty to a person.

According to Nigerians, Osinbajo has always stood for truth, justice and upheld democracy as Nigeria’s number two citizen. Others pointed to the fact that the VP The VP respects and upholds the tenets of the Constitutions and rule of law. They noted that it was Osinbajo (then as Acting President) who sacked the former Director General, State Security Service, Lawal Daura, when he violated the sanctity of the National Assembly. Osinbajo had then described the unauthorised takeover of the National Assembly complex “as a gross violation of constitutional order, rule of law and all acceptable notions of law and order.”

Also, others pointed to the VP’s direct role in ensuring that the Federal Government meet the demands arising from the EndSARS protests, including the disbandment of the controversial Special Anti-Robbery squad unit (SARS) and the establishment of judicial panels to prosecute police brutality and ensure justice for victims.

Nigerians further noted that there is no comparison with Pence’s action as Osinbajo has been the most active and selfless VP in Nigeria’s history, owing to the continuous efforts he is shown in the discharge of his duties as Nigeria’s number two citizen.

Below are some reactions from Nigerians on social media.

This country won't work until our people start thinking straight and acting right. It won't work until our people's perversed mentality and orientation about what is fair and what is foul changes. How on earth could some set of fools have thought of trolling such an upright, dutiful, devoted and hardworking VP by way of a baseless and senseless comparison of him with someone else without even first considering setting and context?

There is no basis for comparison between US Mike Pence in relation to his role as Trump’s deputy and Osinbajo’s role as Nigeria’s VP under President Buhari. Trump’s actions many times incited rebellion against the American constitution. President Buhari never did such. Also, VP Osinbajo has always upheld the constitution in the discharge of his responsibilities as Nigeria’s number two citizen.

THIS IS A SPONSORED POST LOL. Is this the new political strategy in Nigeria? Most of the comments were articulately planned and presented to support Osinbanjo. Good job to whoever is spearheading this strategy.

Re: Nigerians Defend Osinbajo Against Comparison With US VP Pence by brightsbella(m): 8:09am On Jan 09, 2021
It is hypocritical comparing Osinbajo and Pence. Osinbajo has always stood for what is right. He stood for and defended the constitution and rule of law when he sacked the DSS DG, and he stood for the Nigerian people when he suspended his official duty to address angry Nigerians at the airport road.
Re: Nigerians Defend Osinbajo Against Comparison With US VP Pence by OC831: 8:17am On Jan 09, 2021
Only the ignorant would make such comparison anyway, both men were loyal to their principals and Pence only did not carry out Trump’s bidding this time because he had no power to. Buhari is yet to put Osinbajo in such state.

VP Yemi Osinbajo is a standout politician, a rare breed and a bridge builder. A distinguished law professor, a top class lecturer and the most educated, active, performing and constitutionally abiding vice president Nigeria has ever seen.

Any attempt to tarnish his image by the usual suspects is an exercise in futility. Osinbajo's personality is casted in rock stone, his status as a clergyman has helped him to maintain high moral ground never seen before among Nigeria's elite/ politician.
