“Nigeria is, and must remain, a bastion of democracy in West Africa.” - @VP Harris

Nigeria is more a competitive authoritarian state / kleptocracy than a democracy—even a flawed one. Bastion, it is not. I'll say it again: @USinNigeria & @AsstSecStateAF needs to update its Nigeria policy lexicon to reflect realities "on ground".

Naysayers. We have our challenges like every other country. We have seen how Trump and some Republicans are threatening the American democratic foundation, that doesn't mean America is now a dictatorship.

The fascists and authoritarian governance are just because of sheer greed and wickedness. The use of instruments of state for coercion, oppression, suppression and repression against perceived or real political enemies are part of third world democracies.

Buhari pattern of fighting corruption was a classical case in this regard. Absolutism is the African patter of governance though most of them are being backed by these Western imperialists.

So regionalism is the way out; the current quasi-federal system of government would continue to promote hunger, ethnic intimidation, religion intolerance, infrastructure decadence.

Meanwhile, before the military counter-coup of 1966 spearheaded mainly by the northerners, what we had was a regional system of government where every region controls their resources; but after they took over, they moved everything away from the region to the centre, thereby rendering the regions powerless.

I agree with you on the challenges issue but comparing Trump's leadership style or actions is a no no.

Nigeria system or challenges is dtate-sponsorrd. Hence, its persistence.

Nonsense. We have our challenges no doubt but we are making steady progress. Mathew Page and others like him should get down from their high horse. We all saw the allegations of massive rigging that trailed the last US presidential election. We all saw how a US president led a mob of insurrectionists to attack the VP and Senators at the US Capitol on January 6th, 2021. So, what should we call US democracy?

Get sense, our challenges are not like every other country.

You cannot compare the dictatorship and kleptocracy going on in Nigeria to that of Trump and his leaking mouth.

Get your brain checked

With all the nonsense going on in Nigeria right now, how can a sane person compare US with Nigeria? Is Trump ruling US presently? Is Buhari not ruling Nigeria presently?

We need to localize our democracy and our constitution. E.g public hanging of corrupt government officials

Nigeria's democracy is a farce following the way northern Nigeria's military dictators changed the 3 regions 1960 independence political structure of Nigeria into 19 states and corresponding representation constituencies in one region - north - but a meagre 17 new states and lesser number of representative constituencies in the two old southern regions.
This way, the old Northern region largely determines who becomes president of Nigeria.

United States is the bastion of wickedness around the world.

Instigating conflicts in and between other nations just to sell weapons and ensure profitable arrangements for US based corporations.

Manipulate the media all you want with your rubbish propaganda, you can never hide the truth forever.
