You don't expect a country that is among the highest birth rate to have the lowest maternal mortality.
Just yesterday we read about a woman who gave birth to quadruplets after 5 children.
That is purely exposing oneself to death.

maternal mortality is really high in Nigeria. reasons include most women don't register/book early or even at all and the patronage of Traditional birth attendants(TBA)
back then we learnt the code HOSEA as the cause of maternal mortality in Nigeria
H...Heamorrhage(bleeding) placenta previa, placenta abruptio

O obstructed labour( nasty stuff when u see tomato vulva. proper use of a pathograph can prevent this so that once the action line is crossed timely intervention is of the essense, instrumental vaginal delivery( forceps/ ventouse), caeserean section.

S...sepsis

E Eclampsia/ Preeclampsia...........convulsion in pregnancy( mgt using prichards, sibai, zuspan regimen can be used) ....preeclampsia- hypertension and proteinuria can indicate imminent eclampsia

A abortion..

Just like in every ranking, the North will still find a way of bringing Nigeria far down the ladder.

Poverty and early marriage are major causes.

The few fortunate northerners will make us believe everything is well with the north.
You've said it all...

Even the best of the best hospitals in Nigeria can mess up.

One of the best children hospitals in Lagos messed up in my very presence.

Using phone torch light in an emergency.

Power cut happened over 3 times in an emergency.

A complicated country with complicated issues.

Poverty mixed with ignorance is the underlying factor of most of our problems in this country.

Poor singles will be cajoled into getting married with the erroneous belief (ignorance) that he who finds a wife finds a good thing.

On top of it all they will pressured to keep making babies without recourse on how to cater for the mother and unborn child.

Due to poverty and ignorance rather than seek proper help they will rely solely on prayers and good wishes which seems cheap but costlier in long run when complications arise.
You nailed it, your sense is first class.

Really? That is sad. Nigerians should be educated on family planing, they shouldn't keep giving birth to dozens of kids they cannot cater for.

Is there anything about Nigeria that is not a shame? Shameful Health care system. No more treated public water supply system.

Descendants of Othman Danfodio have driven Nigeria to an edge after using their loyal soldiers to restructure Nigeria politically and got a political structure through which they control Nigeria irrespective of where a president comes from. The only succeeding business in Nigeria is influx of Fulani from West Africa into Nigeria and southwards.

That is just it. Some people complain that their husband don't love them, how can he love when he had 5 to 8 people to feed without any reasonable source of income

The religious mentality of children are gifts from God. Needs to change also, that saying is just rhetoric. people should be made to understand that it is their responsibility to care for adequately, financially, emotionally and otherwise for any child they give birth to.

Very true. Child bearing is a risk. This is why women who choose not to bear children due to health risks should not be shamed but African society is constantly pressuring women to get knocked up.
