Very common and very rampant in our society.
When my daughter was having toothache and visible swelling cheek, I told my wife to take her to the state government owned hospital. After meeting the dentist and secured appointment for the next day, my wife began to tell me that we should be using local things. Apparently, she was afraid, just like many Nigerians are afraid of CS even in worst pregnancy cases. I spent over 12k. One tooth removed, four filled. And the kid got better.

It's only in Nigeria, dentist will advice you to remove your tooth because of toothache, other countries treat theirs, our dentists still have a lot to learn.

Dont mind them .So many of them talking rubbish will never go for scaling & polishing even if the price is as low as N2000.They would rather use that money to buy beer.
Secondly how many of them have the money for a RCT anyway , aside from those that have insurance in which most do not cover such treatment .If they tell them the price, dem go they talk another thing .I am not a dentist but I work in a Dental health organization and I know how Nigerians reason .

Please Doc, My premolar had a whole long when I was younger and over the years the area above the gum has broken completely, though I don't feel any pain will there be a long term effect if I don't extract it completely?

I did root canal therapy at teaching hospital. It was a strenuous process, you visit hospital whenever you have appointment. Drilling d canal was very painful that pain relief didn't have any impact, but once they drill to d root, other process is less Painful. Finally crowning to make d teeth strong.

Costs 50k in teaching hospital

They are just like that. I had similar experience and the dentist insisted that the only way out of my severe pain was an extraction. I refused vehemently being a side teeth (canine).. The dentist looked at me arrogantly and said he knew I would later come for extraction eventually. I rejected this and went for local treatment. Today the tooth and all others are still standing and strong at that.

Most developed country would be happy to do all they can and when there is no way out again before they opt for Extraction. Keeping as much natural teeth as possible is the best, why then do Nigeria dentist always opt for Extraction?

Wow I never knew there were other options, I remember when my gum overlap my tooth and it was grazing when I chew, the dentist said they could surgically tear off the part of the gum overlapping or extraction, which I opt for extraction and it was the most uncomfortable moment of my life.

Really Are you sure you didn't visit quacks? This is untrue as extraction is the last resort.A Dentist will try to save a tooth unless its grossly broken down and can't be restored. Root canal treatment is expensive and requires multiple visits however some can be done in a single visit. Patients are also advised to crown the tooth after root canal treatment.
If your tooth is extracted, there are several options to replace a missing tooth;Dentures, Bridge, Implants.
"Nigerian Dentists" are not lazy maybe you just couldn't afford the cost of the treatment.
