PAN or whatever should go and sit down, how many of their products are on Nigeria roads? if they think they are doing well, let them flood Nigeria with their cars to be affordable from 500k below, then we can listen to their stories.

Nigeria being a signatory to new AFCFTA treaty which came into effect in January 2021 has to harmonise their import duty policies to match what is existing in other 54 member African Countries .
I strongly feel that this is what informed the recent border opening and tariff adjustments.

I was surprised when I saw the reduction in rate. What was the government thinking? Anyway, this country is designed to be import dependent. That is why unemployment is high. This has created poor middle class that can no longer afford newly assembled cars in Nigeria. South African middle class are still buying made in South Africa new cars, with funding provided by banks and insurance companies.
Re: PAN Nigeria Demand Reversal Of Tariff Review On Imported Vehicles by ezekins: 4:15pm On Jan 13, 2021
The review is long over due. PAN or what it's called over the years failed to implement people friendly car assemblage policy in Nigeria. How affordable is PAN cars? Pan is selfish. What is the aggregate population of people who are buying pan cars? The approved review will favour the common man. Price of tokunbo cars will drastically drop.

We strongly believe that the comptroller general succumbed to the lobby of tokunboh dealers who are glorified car dealers with no matching investment in local vehicles assemblers.

the day the igbo man will learn to cooperate with his brother, they will build multi national companies that will rival Google and shell and other fortune 500 companies.

that will be the beginning of a better Africa, when anambra business men can pull cash together to do big project instead of one man business

one man business model is outdated,

if America had depended on the one man business structure it would not be able to be what it is today.

we should have well developed stock market that business can sell shares and stock, learn to respect agreement, then the igbo tribe will be the global business hubs. better than the jews

in short, the Yoruba man and hausa man will respect you and work under you, you can indirectly control politicians, Yes

in South Africa white men own the business while black people are in politics, but u don't have to look twice to see who is in charge. ruling by proxy.

haba, igbo tribe open ur eyes, the world is changing
angry grin with which education. Clieless lots

How many Nigerians can afford new cars..I don't think the new policy will have any negative effect on automobile manufacturers in the country.

The reduction of tariff on used cars is not enough, they should be removed totally. This is because Nigerians have been so impoverished they cannot buy the new cars. Even with financing as done in S Africa, Europe etc.
How much will you pay monthly to offset car loan on a brand new eg camry or peogeot worth
eg 20m? Even if you spread it over 5 years folks cannot make the monthly payment. Inflation nko?
The best bet for local manufacturers is for government to partonise only locally assembled vehicles for their parastatals while we (citizens) buy toks duty free.
Will you buy a peugeot 508 for 19m when you can buy a 2012 Avalon for 4m(and have change to build a house). That will even have more resale value than the peogeot in 2 years?
We are poor in Nigeria but pay more to own a car than folks in other countries.
I saw a car on copart listed for $500.
The breakdown listed on the site to land naija after payment of all the charges, fees, duty etc was estimated (on the site) as ₦1.9m!

Totally support PAN on this. You simply cannot make local industries the scapegoat for failed economic policies that has led to run away inflation. If price rises threaten the transportation sector will cheaper aitomobiles solve that? No. Capital costs of durable goods rarely impact on bottom lines. It is the cost of running businesses that is inimical to every sector in Nigeria, transportation inclusive. That is what government should be looking at.

Kill industry and you kill off the economy. We cannot continue in this rent seeking mode forever where government policy is always expediency, and to the highest bidder.

That is what government is for, to bridge the gap between manufacturer and consumer by institutions, legislation and structures. No where in the world are durable goods or hard goods or capital goods (whichever catches your fancy) sold on the fly or over the counter.

This is why we say government should not be a player in business but an umpire so that it has sufficient resources to create enabling environments for business to be made possible.

Bring industrialists, financial institutions and consumers together and let them fashion out a workable solution to the challenge of consumerism and watch the economy take off.
Re: PAN Nigeria Demand Reversal Of Tariff Review On Imported Vehicles by Yansham: 5:16pm On Jan 13, 2021
They keep making laws to favour themselves. They reduce import levy on cars from 30% to 5%. While they left import duty on cars without any reduction. Import levy is for brand new cars while import duty applies to used cars.

The question now is who buy brand new cars and who buy used cars.

What's our business with the reduction? How many Nigerians can actually afford to buy brand new cars?

Selfish people, this bill is still for them, afterall, during the lockdown last year they were still buying brand new Vehicles for themselves.

Abeg o, they should allow us to hear word.

PAN should shut their mouths and follow the president's directives.....yeye people....

This is short term thinking. If IBB had encouraged local manufacturing of vehicles and overcome the temptation of cheap, low quality imports, we would have had Benz, VW, Peugeot, Steyr, Leyland, etc, making cars and commercial vehicles locally. PLUS, we would have been making textiles, ceramics, cookware, and a whole range of products that we get from containers at very low quality, with no residual skill pool, subsidiary industries and auxiliary services (we handed the economy to China) - and you wonder why even banks are sacking staff.

PAN is better off seeking an assurance of government patronage. Besides government many Nigerians cannot afford a new car. PAN is selfish. Nigeria loses so much to Benin Republic on tariff issue

So they lower the tariffs instead of fixing the porous borders which would be killing two birds with one stone, that would also stop illegal immigration & smuggling of arms which enhances the activities of criminal organizations like Ipob, Fulani Herdsmen, & Boko Haram?. Mumu People, Mumu Nation.

Besides endemic corruption enhanced by the lack of a National resolve to be one Country the resources to fix the extensive porous borders are not there. In all the circumstances this is the best way to go worst case scenario.
