economically most important cities in Nigeria:
Nigeria is a blessed country with plenty of potential.even though most of these potentials are not yet havested, nigeria has a promising future. 2day I am going to write about the most important cities in Nigeria when it comes to economic activities. the economy of a region is the combination of commercial, industrial, and financial activities.the strength of your economy determines your GDP, IGR, and NDP. as we know nigeria's economy depends heavily on crude oil.that is to say most of the cities might not really have a large contribution to the federal government purse, but at least they are places that put food on the poor man's table.they have alot in terms of opportunities and potentials.
They are as follows in line with their position of importance

lagos
The city of Lagos is a major economic focal point in Nigeria, generating around 10% of the country's GDP. Most commercial and financial business is carried out in the central business district situated on the island. This is also where most of the country's commercial banks, financial institutions and major corporations are headquartered. Lagos is also the major Information Communications and Telecommunications (ICT) hub of West Africa and potentially, the biggest ICT market in the continent.[101] Lagos is developing a 24-hour economy[102][103] and has also been ranked as one of the most expensive cities in the world.[104][105][106][107][108][109] In some parts of Lagos, residents have one of the highest standards of living in Nigeria and in Africa.[110][111] At the same time, a sizable proportion of the residents live in slums without access to piped water and sanitation.[112][113][114][115][116]

The Port of Lagos is Nigeria's leading port and one of the largest and busiest in Africa. It is administered by the Nigerian Ports Authority and it is split into three main sections: Lagos port, in the main channel next to Lagos Island, Apapa Port (site of the container terminal) and Tin Can Port, both located in Badagry Creek, which flows into Lagos Harbour from the west.[117] The port features a railhead. The port has seen growing amounts of crude oil exported, with export figures rising between 1997 and 2000.[118] Oil and petroleum products provide 14% of GDP and 90% of foreign exchange earnings in Nigeria as a whole.[119]

port Harcourt
Port Harcourt is a major industrial centre as it has a large number of multinational firms as well as other industrial concerns, particularly business related to the petroleum industry. It is the chief oil-refining city in Nigeria and has two main oil refineries located at Eleme. Both refineries process around 210,000 barrels of crude oil a day, both operated by the Port Harcourt Refining Company.[35][36] Rivers State is one of the wealthiest states in Nigeria in terms of gross domestic product and foreign exchange revenue from the oil industry, crude oil being its principal export earner. Microapartment architecture is quite common in certain parts of Port Harcourt. The Point Block of Rivers State Secretariat is an icon of the city. An 18-story building, it is the tallest building in the South East and South South geopolitical zones combined.

kano
The economic significance of Kano dates back to the pre-colonial Africa when Kano city served as the southernmost point of the famous trans-Sahara trade routes. Kano was well connected with many cities in North Africa and some cities in southern Europe.[36] Formerly walled, most of the gates to the Old City survive. The Old City houses the vast Kurmi Market, known for its crafts, while old dye pits—still in use—lie nearby. In the Old City are the Emir's Palace, the Great Mosque, and the Gidan Makama Museum. The products exported from Kano to North Africa include textile materials, leather and grains. Kano was connected with trans-Atlantic trade in 1911 when a railway line reached Kano. Kano is a major centre for the production and export of agricultural products like hides, skins, peanuts, and cotton. Kano houses a railway station with trains to Lagos routed through Kaduna, while Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport lies nearby. Because Kano is north of the rail junction at Kaduna, it has equal access to the seaports at Lagos and Port Harcourt. The city maintains its economy and business even in the 21st century with it producing the richest black man—Aliko Dangote—whose great grand father Alhassan Dantata was the richest during Nigeria's colonial period.

Ado Bayero became emir of Kano in 1963. Kano state was created in 1967 from the then Northern Nigeria by the Federal military government. The first military police commissioner, Audu Bako, is credited with building a solid foundation for the progress of a modern society.I was there at the time, and found him very progressive. He started a lot of development projects—network of roads, a reliable urban water supply. He was a keen farmer himself and funded construction of number of dams to provide irrigation. Thanks to his policies Kano produced all types produce and export it to the neighbouring states.

Inconsistent government policies and sporadic electricity supply have hampered industry, so that Kano's economy relies on trade, retail and services. The emergence of large retail outlets starting from early 2000 with Sahad Stores and Jifatu departmental stores revived investor confidence in the sector which led to the construction of the Ado Bayero mall in, then the largest shopping mall in Nigeria with a retail space of 24,000 square metres (260,000 square feet)[37] It has the popular filmhouse cinemas, the South African retail giants Shoprite and Game stores as anchor partners.

Kano has six districts: the Old City, Bompai, Fagge, Sabon Gari, Syrian Quarter, and Nassarawa.[38]

As of November 2007, there were plans to establish an information technology park in the city.[39]

The city is supplied with water by the nearby Challawa Gorge Dam, which is being considered as a source of hydro power.[40]

The airline Kabo Air has its head office in the city.[41] Kano is also headquarters of Azman Airlines, Max Air and various travel agency businesses.

abeokuta

are you surprised well am not . abeokuta is the most underated city in Nigeria. what people don't know is that abeokuta is the most indusralized city after lagos.Abẹokuta lies in fertile country of wooded savanna, the surface of which is broken by masses of grey granite. It spreads over an extensive area, being surrounded by mud walls 18 miles in extent.[3] Palm oil, lumber, natural rubber, yams, rice, cassava, maize, cotton, other fruits, and shea butter are the chief articles of trade. It is a key export location for cocoa, palm products, fruit, and kola nuts.[2] Both rice and cotton were introduced by the missionaries in the 1850s and have become integral parts of the economy, along with the dye indigo.

Abeokuta lies below the Olumo Rock, home to several caves and shrines.[4] The town depends on the Oyan River Dam for its water supply, which is not always dependable.[5] The dam is situated in the Abeokuta North local government area of Ogun State in the West of Nigeria, about 20 km northwest of the state capital Abeokuta. The dam crosses the Oyan River, a tributary of the Ogun River.

Abeokuta is the headquarters of the federal Ogun-Oshun River Basin Authority, which is responsible for development of land and water resources for Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo states. Included in this are irrigation, food-processing, and electrification.[2]

Local industries include but not limited to fruit canning plants, plastics, breweries, sawmills, and an aluminum products factory. South of town are the Aro granite quarries.[2]

kaduna
Kaduna is an industrial centre of Northern Nigeria and the Middle Belt, manufacturing products like textiles, machinery, steel, aluminium, petroleum products and bearings. However, the textile industry has been declining because of factory closings due to neglect during military rule and competition with Chinese imports. Other light manufactures include: plastics, pharmaceuticals, leather goods, furniture, and televisions.[7] Agriculture is also a major industry in Kaduna, and as such, the Bank of Agriculture has its headquarters in the city.[11] Some of the main agricultural exports include: cotton, peanuts, sorghum, and ginger.[12]

Automobile manufacturing also remains an important part of Kaduna's economy.[2] Peugeot Automobiles Nigeria has an assembly plant in Kaduna.[13]

Pottery is highly prized from Kaduna, especially from the Nok culture.

Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company (KRPC), one of Nigeria's four main oil refineries is located in Kaduna. It is supplied by a pipeline from the Niger Delta oil fields.[7][14]

A 2009 World Bank survey states that Kaduna is one of the top six cities with the highest unemployment. 20% of the population is estimated to be unemployed.[2]

Kaduna has a large market, recently rebuilt after an extensive fire in the mid-1990s.

Kaduna also has a branch of the Nigerian Stock Exchange.[7]

Kaduna has an inland dry port[15]

In 2012 the state government, through a joint venture, attracted SAB Miller to invest in Onitsha Brewery, which started production in August. It was the first large-scale investment in Onitsha since Premier Breweries, makers of the Premier Beer established production in Onitsha in the early part of the 1980s. In January it was announced that upgrades to the value of $110 million would triple the output of beer and malt drinks.

Ibadan
Ibadan is the capital city of Oyo State, the fourth largest state economy in Nigeria,[24] and the second largest non-oil state economy in Nigeria after Lagos state. With its strategic location on the railway line connecting Lagos to Kano,[25] the city is a major center for trade in cassava, cocoa, cotton, timber, rubber, and palm oil. The city and its environs is home to several industries such as Agro allied, Textile, Food processing, Health Care and Cosmetic, Tobacco processing and Cigarette manufacturing, Leatherworks and furniture making Etc. There is abundance of clay, kaolin and aquamarine in the city environs, and there are several cattle ranches, a dairy farm as well as a commercial abattoir in Ibadan. There are dozens of banks and Insurance firms spread out across the cityscape that service the city's millions of inhabitants.

The main economic activities engaged in by the Ibadan populace include Agriculture, Trade, Public service employment, Factory work, Service sector/Tertiary production, Etc. The headquarters of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) have extensive grounds for crop and agricultural research into key tropical crops such as bananas, plantains, maize, cassava, soybean, cowpea and yam.[26] According to a report, Ibadan is the 3rd cheapest Nigerian city to live in.[

Cities that failed to make the cut
notable absence which did not make the list are mostly state that are famous in the past but died down.these are cities that are a shadow of themselves.them include the following:
aba: the commercial nearve center of abia state. the problem is that abia as a whole is now in a miserable state. aba have decayed to an alarming rate. infrastructure which is important is zero.

jos: the once buzzing city of jos is now a shadow of it self due to crisis that have destroyed the city.jos that was once competing with kaduna is now miles behind while the latter have improved beyound compare. it is good to see that peace is gradually coming back to the coal city

Now, does this clown even understand the meaning of economically important? Tell me one area abeokuta is economically important to Nigeria? Should I list to you the numerous areas cities like Aba, Abuja, Nnewi etc are important to Nigeria so you can understand how myopic you are??

I lost interest when I saw Abeokuta on the list, and to my greatest surprise, Abeokuta and Ibadan are even ahead of Onitsha while Nnewi and aba are not on his foolish list, well it's understandable anyway "a child that has not been to other men's farm will always think that his father's farm is the largest". You've shown beyond every reasonable doubt that you're both unintelligent and uneducated.
Everyone in Nigeria has become aware of how you afonjas like peddling lies and propaganda for a living. The op claimed he is presenting CITIES that contribute most ECONOMICALLY to Nigeria, he didn't say STATES!! Anyone who is informed knows that whatever economic activity that is going on in Ogun state is actually taking place outside the state capital, but particularly in its border areas with Lagos where industries were built to cater for Lagos. Is it that you don't know the difference between a state and a city or you think it is only dull people like you that visit nairaland?

I'm still waiting for you and your fellow abobakus that lie shamelessly to tell me and other Nigerians what made abeokuta economically important to Nigeria?

I don't if the problem with you afonjas is due to inherent proclivity to lies and propaganda that runs in your genes or faulty basic education.

Yes, a lot goes on in Abuja aside government offices. Do you think that economic output is only when a production facility is built? Do you know that hotels, construction companies, IT and other activities that place in private offices also generate economic output/value?

The op is myopic and didn't mention any coherent reason why Abeokuta made the list and why Aba and Nnewi among others didn't. Does abeokuta have more industries than Enugu?

So because Aba has bad roads now mean it is no longer an economic powerhouse?

Please go back to school and get some education, and make sure you carry both the op and Thatfairguy along.
