We started milling our own feeds last month the cost reduced abit but the cost of maize is still every high and increasing per day so we cleared the land to plant.

Gradually the broilers, layers and Rottweilers began to grow just as their feeding increased too

Well we are trusting God not to be discouraged as it is not funny that the Nigerian government is not supporting farmers but surely God's grace is sufficient.

* We got cat fish fingerlings #15 per one

* We feed the dogs Royal Canin and booster they have really grown now ,I will update their pictures soon.

* We had livestock in mind because we did it before( goat and ram )some years back but due to the cost of feeding the poultry birds we won't be venturing into that for now.

* Another aspect we currently focus on is food processing and packaging( more updates on this as well)

in food processing, raw materials used must be available always so as not to disappoint your suppliers. don't also forget you need stability in farm before venturing into processing. I humbly suggest you work on your raw materials very well ( dogs, chicken fisheries etc) before going into the processing plant. processing isn't simple as it is on paper. nevertheless with your zeal you should still do it

I know the economy has really hit the poultry industry due to the lockdown many farmers could not produce maize and hence the little we have available many middle men have hoard it and this triggered high cost of poultry feeds.

Many poultry farmers sold their birds and incured terrible loses ,many are still at the verge of selling off everything and many don't even know what to do.

One thing is sure we must not give up we must be innovative and resilient.

Some solutions.
1. You can try organic poultry farming ( I don't know much about this but I have come across many threads on nairaland)
2. You can also make your feeds yourself to reduce the costs of production too

3. You can plant maize if you have space

Every business comes with trying times but no condition is permanent.

*I also want to ask does any one have an idea other options to getting battery cage for layers?

Last year I processed Beans flour on a small scale and even though it was nice I couldn't push it much without Nafdac registration.

Nafdac is expensive and if you have more than one product you have to do registration for each of the product. Then the cost of processing machines is another story.

So I continued with food packaging on a small scale for now.

*I package cleaned ofada rice.
*I source for ijebu garri too

Infact late last year I packaged dried ijebu ponmo,oron crayfish( cleaned and packaged),hand picked Honey beans. I got Gbodo and grounded it into yam flour as well.

*I learnt some lessons too here ,the dried ponmo wasn't really moving so I had to dispose it. The mistake I made was following the advise of people

*For crayfish may vendors who sell to wholesalers tell you its crayfish from oron but I discovered many of them are liars some even sell extremely old stock and repack like new so I dropped crayfish as well since its not readily available.

So I decided that any food item or raw material that is not readily available to me or some thing I cant plant on the farm I dont package or process.

Thank you for your contribution and prayers we sold a property to invest in agriculture
We started with #10 million which includes the cost of land and gradually added more as needs arose then.



*For business plan we didn't have something professional at did it ourselves but we did alot of feasibility studies.
I personally love to do research still covid-19, lockdown and all changed alot in the agricultural sector.

I will also advise anyone who wants to venture into agriculture to have multiple streams of income as return on investment in agric is not immediate and one would still need money to fund it as unforseen expenses would always come up. Many times you see threads like become a millionaire in one month in cat fish farming etc.

* We did bore hole twice
* fish concrete pond failed got a plan B
* first set of fingerlings all died
* Made a loss in the broilers section(story for another day)
*budget for feeding for layers couldn't work again as the cost of feeding them increased seriously.

For the cat fish we dug a concrete pit but the casting was not done properly and unfortunately as we poured 1000 fingerlings inside it all the water drained out and the 1000 cat fishes died.

We really felt bad but decided not to give up so the man who got the fingerlings from told us about 5000 litres tanks and we decided to get two.

you could have started small, that would have shown you how the expenses will be and how to be prepared in your next batch. Please dont give up.

next time consult honest experts in that field to guide you, all good because experience teach better. Congratulations because you're on your way to building empires.
Add goat, just feed them cassava peels and food wastes. they eat poultry droppings too, good source of protein for them.

*its not easy getting honest experts ,see it was an expert in chicken processing that told us how to go about broilers as we have not done it before.
We got 100 first to try it but when another expert also encouraged us to increase the number we got another 400 then when they were matured they started saying something else again.
We made alot of loses here as the price they told us it would be sold was extremely low,we discovered they only wanted us to produce and sell to them at ridiculous prices and yet the price of feed was very high.

Still we won't give up and we would not do broilers for now.

Yes it can't be far from us.

Please don't bother about those owners of processing plants many are not straightforward
If you want to process start small or you take it there for processing alone dont do business with them its not profitable at all.
They might want to entice you into producing for them but the price they would layer give you would be heart breaking

Thank you for your contribution and prayers we sold a property and later added the capital for cars importation into the business as there was lockdown in Nigeria importation of cars wasn't so lucrative again.
We fixed #10 million first as a budget for the land and construction but due to the mistakes of the architect and the money loving engineer we spent times 2 of that budget and infact we nearly spent all our savings on the investment.
We spent too much money on the structure honestly.
Even the design of the pen would have just been the normal straight and open design.

Still we won't give up and we would only produce broilers around festive periods for consumers for now.

Christmas time is really competitive, but if you can get link to those that sells to ShopRite and other eateries during normal timesyou will enjoy the biz.
you will cover if you have the right connection to sell sell 3k to 5k birds a year
