LAGOS – In a bid to reconcile the warring parties in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in South West, a meeting has been scheduled to hold between the Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, and former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, in Ibadan today.

The meeting will be held at the Oyo State Government House, with PDP leaders on the side of Fayose as well as those with Governor Makinde in attendance.

Credible sources in the party told our correspondent that the meeting was at the instance of River State governor, Nyesom Wike, who is also scheduled to attend the meeting with other leaders of the party.

The source disclosed that Fayose and Governor Makinde met in Port Harcourt on Monday.

As at press time, there were indications that Fayose was meeting leaders in his own group, including four state chairmen and some members of the zonal caretaker committee while a similar meeting was also going on in Ibadan between Governor Makinde and his supporters.

The PDP in the South West has been embroiled in crisis since last year over what was seen as a supremacy battle between Fayose and Makinde.

The crisis had led to the suspension of the party’s zonal caretaker chairman, Dayo Ogungbenro, for alleged negligence of duty.

Seven out of the 12 members in the caretaker committee, who suspended the chairman, had called on the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party to appoint another chairman.

The decision was taken at a meeting held in Ibadan.

The seven members are zonal secretary, Hon. Daisi Akintan; Mrs Funmilayo Ogun; Hon. Ayobola Fadeyi-Awolowo; Prince Nekan Olateru-Olagbegi; Hon. Wahab Owokoniran; Alhaji Mustapha Sikiru, and Hon. Martins Olu-Abiloye.

They insisted that on no account would they sit in any meeting with the suspended chairman.

Speaking with our correspondent on Wednesday, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, a former Minister of Transport and PDP chieftain, said the crisis in the South West chapter of the party would be over if Governor Makinde is given a free hand to operate as the leader of the party.

While appealing to Fayose to cooperate with the governor, he said leaders of the party also gave the former Ekiti State governor the same privilege when he was the only PDP governor in the South West.

“The best thing is to allow Makinde to lead the party. Makinde is a serving PDP governor.

“I am sure Ayo Fayose will not object to it because it happened during Fayose’s time and he was allowed to go ahead.

“Fayose knows that when he was there, we all supported him and cooperated with him".

"So, let Makinde go ahead with the leadership of the PDP in the South West and then the political leaders will know how to handle the rest,” Babatope said.

Sir, I know my comment might sound radical to you and other people nonetheless I'll go ahead. The rancor between Fayose and Makinde is about the the control of Yoruba destiny in the PDP. As you might already know, Makinde is a half-Yoruba while Fayoose is a pure breed Yoruba. Half-breed people naturally have divided loyalty to their composite ethnicities. Look around all the regions of Nigeria, pure breeds control the political destiny of the people. Yorubaland should not be an exception. Fayose is fighting a just fight and I'm sure that many pure breed Yorubas in opposition parties are in support of him, at least those who understand the need for self-preservation.

Obviously Biodun but Fayose played a smart one on her.

I still think nonetheless, irrespective of the factional wahala....Biodun is PDP's best bet for that Senatorial Zone.
