Temidayo Akinsuyi LAGOS- South-West governors have begun moves to reposition the Western Nigeria Security Network (WNSN), codenamed Operation Amotekun, following reports by stakeholders in the region that the outfit is derailing from its original mission, Daily Independent has gathered. The regional security outfit, which was established in January 2020, was established after a security summit as a response to the rising security challenges in the South West region. These security challenges range from kidnapping to armed robbery, banditry, farmers-herders’ clashes, and other crimes. However, since its launch, there have been allegations of unjust harassment and extra-judicial killings against officials of the outfit. While it has recorded a measure of success in some areas, operatives of the outfit have also dabbled into some areas which were not their responsibility while banditry and attacks by killer herdsmen have been on the rise. Last month, Amitolu Shittu, the Osun State field commandant of Amotekun, incurred the wrath of Nigerians when he said the outfit would not tolerate indecent dressing and bastardising of Yoruba language by the youths in the society. Last week, the operatives of Amotekun in Oyo State were also in the news for the wrong reasons when they arrested some schoolboys who allegedly identified themselves as Marlians. Following the killing of a popular politician, Fatai Aborode, who was allegedly murdered by Fulani herdsmen for complaining that herders destroyed his 400- acre cashew farm in Igangan, Ibarapa Local Government Area of Oyo State, a popular Yoruba rights activist, Sunday Adeyemo, well known as Sunday Igboho, alongside his followers, stormed the Fulani settlement in the ancient town where he gave the Seriki Fulani, Salihu Abdulkadir, a seven-day ultimate to vacate the area. At the expiration of the ultimatum, Igboho made good his threat by ejecting Abdulkadir and other herdsmen accused of perpetrating crimes ranging from kidnappings, killings, rape to invasion of farmlands with their cattle. Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, last week, also issued a seven-day ultimatum to herdsmen in the forests reserves to leave the area as part of measures to curb kidnappings and banditry. Speaking with Daily Independent on Thursday, a government official said the South West governors – Dr. Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti State), Seyi Makinde (Oyo State), Gboyega Oyetola (Osun State), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun State), and Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State – were already taking steps to reposition Amotekun, beginning with the recruitment process. According to him, the governors realised that if Amotekun had done its job well, the likes of Sunday Igboho would not spring up to wage the war against bandits in the South-West. “Yes, the general impression out there is that Amotekun is deviating from its responsibility and the governors are concerned about that. “Many believed that if Amotekun had done its job properly by waging war against these killers, there won’t be need for the likes of Igboho and his group to come out. “What we have realised is that the problem is the foundation of Amotekun. “By foundation, I mean the recruitment process. Some of these operatives are political errand boys who are recruited as compensation for their roles. How many of these Amotekun operatives can go into the deep forest where these bandits stay? “That is why Amotekun can be talking about indecent dressing while killer herdsmen are having a field day unchallenged in the forests. “The South-West governors have realised that if they really want to achieve a measure of success, they should recruit hunters and locals into the outfit. “Graduates will also be recruited for administrative and logistics purpose but they will be few,” he said. On whether the governors will partner with Igboho and his group, he said a lot of people were agitating that he (Igboho) should be appointed the Corps Marshal of Amotekun to oversee the operation of the outfit in all the South-West states. According to him, aside Igboho, the governors will also partner with key security leaders such as the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), which is under the command of Aare Gani Adams, the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, as well as other groups that are ready to partner with them to restore peace in the region. Speaking in a recent interview, Aare Adams had said recruitment into Amotekun was heavily politicised by politicians who had hijacked the process. He had said: “Our initial plan was that 30 percent of OPC members should be recruited into the Amotekun Corps. “They will be well-structured and trained by a retired Police, Army or DSS officer. Aside OPC, we also talked about incorporating vigilantes, hunters and other security organisations. But because of the reasons best known to them, they decided to jettison it and today, most of the recruitment into Amotekun now have political undertone. “But we are not worried or ruffled about that. Now, they still have the opportunity to do something that will make them be proud as true sons of Yorubaland.” Speaking with Daily Independent, Yinka Odumakin, National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, said the South-West governors must be careful not to allow the outfit to be derailed by the ‘Nigerian factor’. “The South-West governors should have their eyes on the ball and not allow the Nigerian factor to derail Amotekun as a regional buffer against insecurity,” he said. https://www.independent.ng/south-west-governors-move-to-reposition-amotekun/

They have reduced themselves to leopard print aso ebi personnels whose job is to arrest little children dancing to naira Marley. This is what you get when you create a regional security outfit under the supervision of the same Fulani quota system constitution. ESN approach is the best, they don't do political correctness, they are not accountable to politicians, they do the exact thing The guy above me is Fulani and prefers Amotekun which should tell you alot when a thief advises you on the best way to guard your house against him |

The earlier they disband this toothless rogue outfit and fashion out a better security network in the mold of eastern security network, the better for the south west. Yorubas have been killed, raped and maimed in their own land non stop and there seems to be no end to all this. they have been overwhelmed and their men are helpless. all my thoughts and prayers are with them in this time of agony. I pray their men emulates and grow balls like the gallant men of the east. |

triple996:Unlike ESN that is already doing the needful, Amotekun will never achieve its objective simply because your slave governors won't want their Northern masters to be pissed off. |

Sunday Ighogho should teach Amotekun how to protect Yoruba people from Fulani invasion. If Sunday Ighogho isn’t enough, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu should help out or else Ondo and Oya is gone to the Fulani. |

I think it's better the fall under the command of ESN otherwise politicians will hijack it. ESN is well established with hierarchy. |

May God help us all. Every region needs it's own Legitimate Police Force, like how you have LAPD and NYPD, but also FBI to as the big overseer. However, when you ask the people in the Senate and House, they will tell you... "We are not ready for State Police" ask them 5 years from now they will tell you "We are not ready for State Police" ask them 10 years from now, they will tell you "We are not ready for State Police" ask them 20 years from now, they will tell you "We are not ready for State Police" ... Naijaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa It's like that post here on nairaland that compared the picture of Ibadan from the 70s and 2020, where the 70s picture looked better and more developed. I guess we know the reason for such lack of development... "We are not ready..." |

And you think that they won’t want to be in charge of Yoruba land .. a Muslim land.. YORUBA PEOPLE DONT REALLY KNOW THIS FULANI PEOPLE OR THEY PRETEND NOT TO.. THEYRE MASTERS OF ISLAM ... AND DONT BOW TO ANY INFIDEL.. IS JUST A MATTER IF TIME.. this is fact And there’s nothing Yoruba can do about it.. FACT YOU PEOPLE KEEP DECEIVING YOURSELVES ... BELIEVING IN 21 CENTURY , SUCH THING CANT HAPPEN ... FORGETTING FULANI CALENDAR IS DIFFERENT.. NO WORRIES KEEP FIGHTING IGBOS .. vVERY SOON UNA EYES GO CLEAR |

With regards to Amotekun, the big elephant in the room, FUNDING and CONTROL The state governments FUND and CONTROL its operations, and that needs to be looked into for Amotekun to really be a force to be reckoned with. The fact that Amotekun is funded and controlled by the SW state governments, also means that the Fulani federal government, are somewhat, in indirect control of Amotekun. The fact that Amotekun probably has to hand over anyone they arrest to the Fulani-controlled police force, also means that Fulanis are being given undeserved power over Amotekun operations, and that helps to feed the superiority complex that Fulanis have, whenever Yoruba organisations make meaningful statements in Yoruba favour. Because they know that all they have to do is to wait for Amotekun to arrest any Fulani terrorist, once Amotekun hands the person to the Fulani-controlled police, that Fulani terrorist could be set free, or even if the case gets to court, the Fulani-controlled judiciary will do their usual wuruwuru to set the person free. It is all a part of why the Fulani establishment talks down on Yorubas, and hardly shows respect to Yoruba wishes. That's why Yerima Shettima will develop a hard-on when he is challenging Yorubas. That's why FUNAM and MIYETTI ALLAH will countermand a seating SWern governor. They know that they can use 2023 to keep the Yoruba guys in the federal corridors of power, in check and keep them hypnotised. They know that Amotekun is subservient to the Fulani-controlled police, and as such, are the final arbiters of the Nigerian criminal justice system To make Amotekun shine, I propose infusing ESN/Igboho ways into the whole structure. First of all, I am happy the SW governors are considering making Igboho the head of Amotekun. I will also propose they give him freehand in making the decisions in terms of the operations of Amotekun. Ideally, Gani Adams, as the Aare ona kakanfo of Yorubaland should be the head of Amotekun, but if he is becoming too comfortable in air conditioned offices, and shies away from controversial and hard decisions, it makes sense for the leadership to be assumed by Igboho. Governors should handsoff the day to day operations of Amotekun. I propose that Amotekun scope of operations be limited to the bushes and forests of Yoruba land. I also propose that Amotekun doesn't have to hand over criminals to the Fulani-controlled police. This is controversial but extremely necessary for the safety and preservation of Yorubaland. I know this will be difficult to achieve especially as the funding is wholly derived from the state governments, but Yorubas may also consider funding Amotekun privately, just to make sure Yorubas have a freehand in dealing with any terrorists caught |

nairavsdollars:Fulanis control the court system. So for them to be prosecuted, brings them within the areas where Fulanis will corrupt the system. Back to square one So either you deal with the Fulani-corrupted court system, or the indigenous Yoruba legal system deals with the arrested criminals |
