As she was about to explain herself, he slapped her again. This was the third time he was slapping her and before one could spell jack Robinson he carried her up and hit her on the wall. He hit her like someone who has felt so much resentment towards her. He was able to lift her like she was nothing. Emeka is someone who lifts the heaviest weight in the local gym, carrying chisom up must have felt like when you are picking a needle up. I mean, that's the only thing that explains the way he flung her like she was lifeless, like an airbag.

What happened was that, chisom had greeted Ebuka, and she stayed longer than she should have. This happened while they were at mamas drinking. Emeka didn't know Ebuka, but somehow he was sure that chisom was cheating on him with Ebuka, even if she isn't yet, she has the plan to. Not like kate has ever cheated on him, no she doesn't have that record. If someone was cheating in the relationship, we would say that Emeka's second name is cheating. He would cheat, fake cry while gaslighting and chisom will feel bad for being angry at him and in turn, she will apologize. Emeka and manipulation are stronger together. He slapped her there, an embarrassing scene, Ebuka nearly fought him but Chisom told him not to, that he should just leave.

Ebuka was Chisom's classmate from way back, holy cross primary school, they were very good friends. Seeing Ebuka that day after like 8 good years, she needed to catch up a lil, which prolonged their convo. Ebuka was very angry at the situation, he wondered why Chisom with all her beauty and amazing personality would be dating someone like that. He felt really embarrassed and powerless, he only told Chisom "you shouldn't be doing this to yourself, you deserve much better than this," he then left.

Emeka told Chisom to follow him immediately. He walked like someone who was going to war, his breathing was heavy and his eyes bloodshot. Chisom knew what this meant, It wasn't the first time she was seeing and going to experience this. She has being living in this hell for over three years and the heat now offers comfort. He reached the car, she slowed down, she was really embarrassed as people watched them, he turned, shouted at her for walking slow, and he slapped her again. She didn't say anything, she entered the car. You know? Someone would see her sitting in the front seat of a lexus 350 and think that she was enjoying. Some psychotic Nigerians would tag the relationship goals. The ones that are mentally unstable will tell you how it's better to cry in a lexus than to laugh in a legedes. But you can't tell someone's reality till you wear their shoe.

When they reached the house, she wasn't fully cohabitating, she stayed just weekends and goes back to school. He dragged her out of the car. She was literally begging to explain "babe listen to me first," he slapped her again.
"will you keep quiet!?"
She started crying, she didn't struggle again, if he was going to kill her that day, let it happen. She was ready to die. He dragged her up, opened the door of their flat, walked into the sitting room of the well furnished one room and parlour. The beast in him was all out.
"so you dey go around dey Bleep this small small boys abi? Wetin I never give you kate?"
He shouted. She didn't say anything, she kept looking at him like an isaac that was aware that Abraham was going to sacrifice him. She was sure he wouldn't keep calm till he has pounded on her. Kate believes that God had assigned a cross to everybody, maybe this is her own cross and she is carrying it.
Her favorite line "outside the beating and the insults. he is a very nice guy"
That's what she aways told her best friend, Adaobi. Sometimes I wonder if nice and love meant different things now, and we don't know yet. I mean, if this character defines nice and love, then I have to throw away my dictionary.

"ashawo"
This one hit her very hard and she shouted
"I have told you to stop calling me that"
"you still get mouth dey talk" he rushed her, carried her up and on the wall.
The neighbors didn't come out, they had gotten used to it. They had gotten used to seeing her bruised face every weekend. They had gotten used to the sound of her cries that it now sounds as normal as tiger generators at night. They also gave up in trying to advice a girl 'inlove.'

This time she didn't land well, her head hit the wall and she became unconscious, it had affected her brain and when he found out that she had stopped responding, he rushed her to the hospital. Explained to the doctor about how she fell on the staircase while running down the staircase. How he always told her to not be rushing the stairs. He started crying again. The doctor looked at him, a very loving and nice man. Well, a manipulative being. A beast. An animal. But this was not what the doctor saw.

She was in coma for two straight days. When she woke up, she looked around, asked the doctor "where's Kelvin?"

Chisom it's till you die that you will stop seeking death.

Story 2.

"Ejiofor I want you to disvrigin me right now"

"Ulomma are you sure you know what you are saying"

"Ejiofor, if you have ever loved me, this is the time to show me, please let's do it fast and get off this bush before someone sees us here"

"you know this is an abomination ụlọmma"

"it's better I commit this abomination than face death"

"what do you mean ulomma?"

"Ejiofor don't tell me that you did not here that a two headed python surfaced in eke okwaeke, and you know what that means right?"

He rolls his eyes "it means the land has to be cleansed and seven virgin girls will be needed" then, gives the and-so? Look

"I ask you again Ejiofor, do you want me dead, or you want this love alive?"

"it doesn't stop this from being an abomination ụlọ mma"

She was surprised, and somehow disappointed
"Chineke, now I know that all the promises of marriage and future with me was a lie. So you didn't love me as you always said, ehn ejiofor, you should have told me earlier"..... She starts sobbing

"You know I love you ulomma, but you are demanding more than I can give right now. You know very well that the consequence of what you are seeking for is banishment from the land. Or, are you forgetting that I'm the only son of my parents?"

"are you saying I'm better off dead?"

"No, I never said that"

"Then what are you saying?"

"I'm saying that I can't commit to this abomination"

"that means I should be sacrificed okwaya?"

"You might not even get selected ulomma, you are being paranoid for litter or no reason"

"You call me looking after myself as being paranoid Ejiofor, mgbeke has lost hers yesterday with Uchennaya, Mgbankwo too with omekannaya, but I'm here still trying to convince you. You didn't love me, you never did, you just played me all along"

"whaaaaaattttt!"

"please stop shouting. These are people who are in love, and are ready to sacrifice for love. I regret knowing you"..... Starts crying

"it's not like that mma, I love you but..."

"if you love me, there will be no but, there wouldn't be a but in a life or death situation. You only want me dead, so that you can go after Azuka"

"why will you say something like that?"

Ejiofor, stood crossing his hands, he looked straight into her eyes, he saw reasons with her but his family mattered. He wasn't ready to gamble being banished. He wanted to do it, because he was also very scared, scared that she might get picked, but there was nothing he could do. He was really tensed, he loved her so much, but there are sacrifices you don't just make, and this was one of them for Ejiofor.

Ulomma, on her own was very disappointed, she never believed that he would deny to do something like this for her even when her own life mattered. She cursed everything that existed at that moment, she cursed that she had to come from that town, Okwaeke. In okwaeke, whenever a two headed python showed in the eke market square, that's a sign of calamity, a sign that the gods are angry and as tradition demands, seven virgins are needed to cleanse the land, and this rite takes place on the eke market day following the unusual visitation.

It was on an Orie day, that the python visited. Then, on the afọr day they were having this discussion, in the afternoon as so many villagers had gone to trade in the neighboring village whose market day was afor. it was barely a day remaining before the eke day, they stood there looking at each other, ulomma was looking at him with so much resentment, while he looked at her with so much pity.

"Ulomma, spread your wrapper, let's be fast before someone sees us"

She couldn't believe what she heard

"Are you serious ejiofor?"

"yes mma"

She spread the wrapper as fast as she could, he carried her and placed her nicely, he untied his wrapper and had the way with her.

The next day was an Nkwor day, Ulomma was at home that evening when elders from Ejiofor's kindred trooped in. She was really scared, she thought it was about what happened the day before. She went inside, called her father, then she reminded there.

After what seemed like an endless visit, her father called her name from outside. She answered, walked in a very slow pace, and reached outside the house.

"This man said he wants to marry you, do you accept him?"

She nodded her head

She didn't expect it, she knew Ejiofor wasn't ready for marriage yet, but he was just saving the day.
