My take. Please, don't give these dunces respect of intellect. They are not that smart. Even the West and Chinese that are far more sophisticated finds it hard to execute an elaborate plan such as this woman is suggesting. The truth is that agricultural practices in the North is getting more advance by the day because they practice in large scale.

Tomato is an easily perishable berry. Everyday, new hybrids of plant seeds are introduced. I think they pluck these tomatoes green up north and transport it down south like that. Once at sales destination, they are treated with ripening substances like ethylene. It ripens in an attractive way.

That way, they can minimize damages and losses due to logistics and transportation and still command good market price leading to more profit.
