A new Doctoral study by Uzoamaka Chukwuma at the University of Ibadan has revealed that many men are suffering spousal abuse in Lagos State.

According to the study, many married men are victims of spousal abuse but suffering in silence because “the society does not believe that men can be victims of spousal abuse; hence, the non-disclosure of such experience for fear of stigmatisation”.

This was part of the findings of a doctoral thesis carried out by Dr. Ifeanyi Uzoamaka Chukwuma entitled “Spousal abuse against men in Lagos state, Nigeria”.

Under the Supervision of renown criminologist and former Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Adeyinka Aderinto, the study found that married men among the sampled population in Kosofe, Lagos Mainland, Agege, Mushin and Ikorodu, are victims of different forms of spousal abuse.

According to Dr. Uzoamaka Chukwuma, married men suffered mostly emotional abuse, followed by sexual abuse, physical and economic abuses.

She explained that men who are older than their wives experienced more abuse than men who are younger than their wives.

According to her, married men whose wives were not in their first marriage were two times more likely to experienced spousal abuse while men in polygamous marriage are less likely to be victims of spousal abuse.

The criminologist who successfully defended her thesis at the department of Sociology, stated that despite being abused, “men would not report because they feared reactions from friends and family, did not want third-party interference and because they were still financially dependent on their wives”.

Dr. Chukwuma who noted that spousal abuse against men is underreported despite its prevalence in Lagos, asked that federal and state governments should establish centers to deal with male victims of spousal abuse and prosecute female perpetrators.

They subtly make women gain more sympathy by making them seem on the receiving end of all societal problems

Then they make women gain more privileges as they're the "weaker sex"

Then they tell u gender is nothing but oppression that a woman should be given manly roles by introducing FEMINISM

Then they tell u a man is a woman and a woman is a man by introducing TRANSGENDERISM

Then they tell u it is totally okay for a man to be weak, timid and vulnerable. Infact they encourage it.

And viola! We have a generation of WEAKLINGS!!!

Not only Lagos. It’s a rising trend in this country. A lot of females are venting their family based, work based, and natural frustrations on their partners. What a shame.

Saphiere come o, come and see your fellow woman revealing the truth of what a lot of men are going through in the hands of women, men are not complaining because if a man complains the society will tell him" BE A MAN" or '' ARE YOU NOT A MAN '' but a lot feminists like Saphiere these days don't want to be women, they want men to become women like them to ride over the men, but it will not happen because God is more than them....

The reason behind this, is multi - factorial..

Though a patriarchal society, there's a lot of inherent sympathy for the females..

Without a balance from the father, most men have been trained up by their mothers - - this in itself gives some degree of visual legitimacy that the woman is always right.

Coupled with cultural norms that a woman is in charge of the home front, there's a growing tendency to assume that a woman's complaints of the man's (husband) behaviour is justified without listening to the husband in question.

Corrections be it parent - child and sometimes translated into spouse-spouse is largely carried out as verbal/ emotional abuse with overtures into physical abuse.

Going forward... It's not the physical centers that should take precedence but
1..telephone or SM helplines,
2..mass education on coercive control on all forms of media and
3..strong pre-marital counselling classes or platforms on both religious and secular organisations
4..building strong foundations for homes where everyone is valued

This may well help to curb the rot.

Non-financially independent men stay put with abusive wives. You see, when they say hussle and make money, ẹ get why?

Anyway, the researcher or the reporter did not tell us the cause. As Africa person, wey I be, at the mentioned of Lagos, the cause of men staying in abusive marriage and continuing to be dependent on their wife no go pass juju. The recommendation suppose to be deliverance not government intervention.
