Quite a tricky one. We are seeing a consistent increase in US 10-year treasury, which means two things. Maybe investors are gradually selling off bonds and entering the equities market, but then if the pace is faster, then they are switching to alternative assets rather than equities because they believe that interest rates should rise since the govt will continue to borrow to dole stimulus packages over the next few weeks. One thing that I know is, many US residents will receive $1,400 early next week, which might mitigate whatever negative stuffs institutional investors have in mind.

Normally, an increase in interest rate means higher confidence in the equities market. But rapid increase is quite dangerous!

The cash demands of companies dealing with the Pandemic means buybacks are falling to record lows over the last year which removes buying pressure from equities. The way SPACS are proliferating is another cause for concern and sign of a bubble. SPACS have not been making this much noise since just before the Tech crash at the turn of the century. It's like everyone is rushing to list before a bubble pops.

I am seriously considering switching my pension units to a fixed low rate cash pension in the medium term to avoid stories that touch, then come back to a normal pension plan after any pullback. I remember when market pulled back like 25% in March last year, most pension funds pulled back 30% or so. Luckily they recovered and finished much higher, but in the event of a serious pullback/ crash, one would rather be in a defensive Fixed income position and forego the usual 5% growth for this year, then jump back in after any pullback with a more aggressive policy to take advantage of low prices. Would you say that's advisable?

I don't think any new emergence of armed insurrection in Nigeria will be met with kids gloves, especially not an armed Igbo group. I am not surprised at attempts to nip it in the bud. If you respect the fact that IPOB are set on separation, then there is little to negotiate over. Unfortunately, unless IPOB can worry FG tactically and militarily, there will be no negotiation. Nigeria only negotiates with groups that cause them serious problems eg Boko Haram and MEND. If they can bully their way through, they will seek to crush at the budding stages of insurrection like they did with the Shi'ites etc. They also tried to crush Boko Haram and Ijaws (Odi) in the initial stages but the problem mushroomed beyond their control. Let's hope this matter is confined to the forest and not civilian areas. I am seeing conflicting stories so far.

Central banks in developed markets are not necessarily tightening policies right now. They will continue to maintain low interest rates even if inflation increases. Don't forget that credibility is important, if they suddenly start withdrawing liquidity, then the investor community will lose faith in them (especially since they promised to maintain low rates for a long time). Honestly, I don't see a crash in the immediate or nearest future, but no one knows!

Of course, buybacks and dividends will drop because companies need cash.

Why defensive fixed income position(s)? What about switching to utilities or a sector with some stable contracted cashflows? Defensive industries give you some upside opportunity + downside protection.

I agree with this. If you are not very fierce and strong like MEND and BokoHaram, Naija military go just use you shine like Zaki Biam, Shiite, Odi etc

I looked at every single pension option my provider offers and all of them went down drastically in March 2020 including the Sharia option! They did not offer much downside protection. Utilities and co will also take a hit cos there is still a good element of overvaluation respective to their earnings. Also remember Gold took a big hit in March. How more defensive can you get than Gold? The only pension option I'm seeing that does not take a sizeable hit is the fixed Cash option which just maintains a steady straight line at less than 1% growth per year. I'm currently on a balanced growth option which is a more conservative option, and see what it did in March. I think I'd rather play the contrarian and forego the yearly 5% gain than be hit with a 30-40% pullback. After the others pullback, I can step back in with more buying power.

You just mentioned the crisis in the SW over Fulani Herdsmen, BokoHaram, Bandits and the numerous groups that control different portions of the waterways in the SS but none of them have been called what they truly are! They are terrorist groups in different capacities and motives!

How the Governors of the S. East sleep at night while this level of chaos is going on is beyond me. It is the ultimate show of betrayal and irresponsibility to the people.

I can’t agree any less with your post! This is the reason why my participation in politics in politics is primarily hinged on my personal values and beliefs and not necessarily what any politician/ party says.
This is the reason I pity the young people especially in developing countries without strong institutions who kill themselves for these criminals whose only purpose is to divided people.

Kudos to Nnamdi Kanu for playing it up and turning it into a rallying cry. He is a master of publicity. But Sowore should be careful. These are not the days of Yaradua when Charles Okah aka Jomogbomo will be feeding him information on attacks, sometimes even as they are happening or before they happen. Baba, this is 2021.. People don’t necessarily have to rely on Sowore/ Linda Ikeji or one mouthpiece to get or disseminate critical/ sensitive information. Except the Federal government places strong restrictions on social media and distribution of information akin to China’s case, then there is nothing they can do.
I just don’t want killings especially of innocent women and children who like some said are just tapping palm wine and farming their peace away.
