The Italian ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and a military policeman travelling with him have been killed in an attack on a United Nations convoy in eastern DRC, the Italian foreign ministry said in a statement.

The convoy was attacked on Monday near the town of Kanyamahoro at approximately 10:15am (08:15 GMT) as part of a kidnap attempt, the Virunga National Park told Reuters.

The Italian ambassador, Luca Attanasio, and a military policeman travelling with him were killed, the Italian foreign ministry said in a statement.

The park had said earlier that two people in the convoy had been killed and the ambassador wounded. The third person killed was a driver, diplomatic sources said.

It was not immediately clear who was behind the attack. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

“It is with deep sorrow that the Foreign Ministry confirms the death today in Goma of the Italian Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Luca Attanasio, and of a policemen from the Carabinieri,” the foreign ministry statement said.

Now, the question is: What was he doing in Eastern DR Congo and why didn't the Italian mission in Congo advise him against taking such a perilous trip? That is a region with over 130 different armed groups for pete's sake.

Or did the man have a death wish or something?

This is an epic fail on the part of the Italian mission in Congo and even the Congolese government too. They should have advised against that trip. How hard is that?

On a regular day, Eastern Congo, particularly areas around North Kivu (where the Virunga NP is located) are no-go areas as a result of the fact that they are yet to be fully pacified by the Congolese authorities.

Those areas are extremely dangerous and swarming with all sorts of militias and rebel groups, all touting different ideologies and carrying out forms of bestial and criminal acts. These groups have been in operation since the First and Second Congo Wars of the late 1990s and some are funded by foreign entities to disrupt the region and country as a whole.

Then add that to the fact that they may not have been able to call in back-up as a result of the rough nature of the roads around there, depending on where they were attacked by their assailants.

This is absurd. Who in his right mind sanctioned such a bloody trip?

What I meant was that the poor security situation in that part of the Congo which led to the killing of this ambassador was occasioned by the ceaseless western interferences in the internal politics of the Congo since the days of Lumumba and Mobutu.. Actually, it started since the days of King Leopold of Belgium! Congo's crime is that it's by far the richest African state in terms of minerals. That country sits on germstones and rare earth metals worth over 14 trillion USD at the last check! The west is determined to make sure that no powerful government will ever run the Congo in order not to put a stop to their economic crimes in that country... It's a long story bro..

The question to ask is: what was He doing in the area?
The humanitarian aid was just a cover up for his usual traffic with the rebels.
The governor, the internal affairs minister and the police were not aware of his trip. He had sneaked in the area to meet the militia.

We are talking about an Italian mafia man.

I am Congolese and have zero sympathy for the foreigners who arm militia groups and steal minerals in my country.

By the way, the UN has well over 17 thousands soldiers in the DRC, most of which are stationed where this thief was killed.

The blood of my people is crying against these thieves.
