Nigeria’s power sector may have recorded the lowest decline in technical hitches and the negative indicator of power system collapses with only four incidents in 2020. This is the first of such low figures in about 12 years, industry records have shown.

The records obtained by Daily Trust from the Federal Ministry of Power and from the Independent System Operations (ISO) – the power grid managing section of the power sector – revealed that between 2009 and 2021, the country recorded 259 cases of system disturbance.

However, the trend which spreads outages that could last for a day or two nationwide or across half of the country dropped to just four in 2020, with just one incident so far in the first two months of 2021.

According to Engr Fadahunsi Femi, a power system operator, a system collapse often occurs when the power transmission line(s) trips, sending outages to distribution load centres across some of the 11 Distribution Companies (DisCos) or all of them.

When such happens, the Generation Companies (GenCos) would not be able to generate power, while the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) cannot transmit and the DisCos are left with no power for the consumers thereby resulting in widespread outage.

Engr femi noted that, “When the outage is not across the entire country, then it is a partial system collapse. However, a nationwide outage means a total system collapse.”

Analysis of the incidents records shows that 142 total and partial system collapses were recorded from 2009 to 2013. The system recorded 103 others from 2014 to 2021, yet during the period, the power sector utilities were privatised. Thus in a span of almost 12 years, Nigerians have experienced widespread outage 259 times.

The record of only four collapses in 2020 marked a new milestone in the power sector. This was less than half of the 10 recorded in 2019 in a year that industry experts expected higher figures due to issues of the COVID-19 lockdown that restricted movement which could affect power line maintenance, gas shortage to GenCos, among others.

So far in 2021, only one partial system collapse has been recorded, just as the system has recorded multiple all-time peak power generation – another milestone between 2020 and 2021, much more than it had in the past 10 years.

However, in 2020, there were four all-time peak records and three more recorded so far in 2021.

In 2020, the national grid recorded all-time power evacuation; starting with 5377.8 megawatts (MW) on August 1, and 5,420.30MW on August 19. By October 28, there was an increase to 5,459.50MW and it rose to 5,502.40MW by October 30. The grid peak capacity has increased so far this year with 5,552MW recorded on January 6, and a rise to 5,584.40MW recorded on January 7.

Daily Trust also found out that the peak power generation for the last seven days of February, 2021 has been over 5,000MW; with 5593.4MW recorded on February 25, being the latest peak generation and the third this year.

The acting Managing Director (MD) of TCN, Engr Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, confirmed that another milestone was recorded on February 26, 2021, when the grid successfully evacuated 116,891.14 megawatts hour (MWH) of electricity supplied to consumers by the 11 DisCos, saying, “This is higher than the previous value of 116,121.42MWH that occurred on 25/02/2021 by 769.72MWH.

“TCN is optimising its available resources to better serve the DisCos and the GenCos through prompt maintenance of the existing grid network while applying best practices in completing ongoing low hanging fruits projects to improve the overall grid capacity.”

Director, Renewable and Rural Power Access in the Ministry of Power, Engr Faruk Yusuf Yabo, the national grid achieved an all-year peak of 115MWH power supply on December 11, 2020.

Engr Yabo said, “The improved power supply and improvement in 2020 was a great departure from the past. This I can say was as a result of the realignment of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) by the Ministry of Power.”

In a response to Daily Trust enquiry, the Minister of Power, Engr. Sale Mamman said the decline in system collapses was one of the focal points of the minister in ensuring that complaints of epileptic power supply to consumers were tackled.

“Gradually, Nigerians will be seeing the results of what is being done in the control rooms and substations to improve power supply.

“There are still hitches, but the government is doing its best. You are aware that the minister recently revealed that the federal government provides a N50bn subsidy monthly to the Nigerian electricity market to help the DisCos supply improved power to Nigerians,” Mamman said via correspondence from his aide on social media, Ado Adamu Also.

Good Morning my fellow Nigerians,

When I assumed office in August 2019, my first point of call was to reorganize the agencies and ensure we have square pegs in square holes, we are pleased to see this providing tremendous results.

System losses are declining with several new transmission milestones over the past 7 Months which has in turn led to a significant rise in the average transmission peaks.

Well done to all involved.

Engr. Sale Mamman, (Minister of Power)

Even though I am a staunch supporter of the leading opposition party in the country, I just have to commend this administration for undergoing modifications in our dilapidated power sector.

The ministry have given spontaneous response in addressing one of the major bane of the country.

Be that as it may, I will advise the minister to continue tackling the problem.

I don't understand a shit, I'm even tired of reading the sad stories about Nigeria. Like if Nigeria is a movie, it would be named the degoen of agony. Thanks to 'them', proper education is even is for classified section of the society.

Public education is as useless as p in psychology. So tell me, a country that does not value education will develop? we have some chap minds that would have made waves and invent things, are religated to just reading and graduating with some ability to read like a computer. That's sucks, right? Always far step behind, we are not only underdeveloping but we are also uprooting those we met on ground.

All thanks to our leaders starting from a to z, you guys sucks. But you should know you can't be here more 130th yrs and you don't know what will happen to generation. We might decide to hunt them. Let Fulani Hersman extrapolate if Nigeria won't be like Mexico. You remember the time kogi was tag as the gun running state, and Edo is still the capital of cultism. With yahoo, some last hope of the civilisation that you decided to keep down are travelling out of the country. And you know what happens in abroad. if a lot of bad egg populate those place. Your generation might go into extinction. Or you want to move them to Mars?

Well it's up to you......

I'm part of the last hope of civilisation, you can tell.

Oga, we don hear you.

My attention has been drawn to the fact that you and some of your never do well friends here go about derailing threads by quoting everyone who has something reasonable to contribute with silly pictures.

All you do here is to constitute nuisance morning and night which is irritating.

I will advise you detach yourself from this self inflicted stupiiidity.

Well, up until recently, DISCOS were charging less than N30 per kwh for electricity that, according to a former CBN deputy honcho, cost N53 naira to produce

Throw in the fact that at least 40% of customers don't pay for power...according to the PWC report on power in 2018

When you privatize the power sector, and run it at a loss, there won't be enough profits to fix everything....so we have power collapses.

Either we face reality, and deregulate the power sector...or we keep on paying cheap power, and keep on refusing to pay for power...and get low power allocation.

Minister of power Engineer Sale Mamman na fool

what is difficult in calling his counterparts in Uganda, Ethiopia, Tunisia, Algeria, and asking them "who do Una light?" Why do these African countries have 24/7 Electricity and we don't have? give me the persons number, call the person tell him fix Nigeria electricity for us we pay you even if we have to take loan we take.

Forget all these nonesense Una dey claim say Una dey do, we can see what's going on, why will it take 20 years to build Mambilla dam one of Africa's smallest dams which only produces 3000 MEGA WATTS while Ethiopia used 9 years to build Africa's Largest dam which produces 6.35GIGA WATTS more than 2 times what our dam will produce if it is eventually finished, guess what? our dam also costs more than theirs

that small nonesense dam called Mambilla dam whereas Ethiopia built GERD dam the biggest Dam in Africa and the third largest in the world which cost them only $5billion US dollars our small nonesense cost us $5.8billion USD so far

Edit:
Thanks for the kind words.

Uganda, south Africa, Gabon, Benin, Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, Tanzania, Morocco, Seychelles, Ghana, and many more have 24/7 Electricity nation wide whereas in Nigeria even Abuja does not have 24/7 Electricity.

We be giant of Africa for mouth. If them do AFCTA free movement of persons, I go just run commot from this Naija, Rwanda, Tanzania and other countries South and East of Africa are Clean, beautiful and VERY safe and secure with 24/7 Electricity. That's why their people don't follow us to trek through desert, serve as slaves in Libya, swim Mediterranean, only to drown or be deported.

When Fashola was minister of Power, you people will never stop attacking him.

Today many of you do no t even know who the minister of power is.

Yet we say the north is our problem.

You will not see them attacking their selves unnecessarily, but we are woke, we only loose our bite when the northerner is on charge. Why won't Buhari appoint more of Northerners and have peace of mind?
