Rent in U.S is 1000+ monthly and the average Nigerian in U.S is a minimum wage earner,don't forget transportation,light and water at the end of the month, one is left with little cash for saving.

I am not arguing about rent being different in different states and cities,the thing is,if you are a Nigerian and you are hoping to secure a stable job in U.S,you have to move to place like Dallas, Huston, Saint Thomas, or the sate of California,all of which have an expensive rental and homeless problem. So since you are saying rent are less than 1k per month, please point out a city in U.S were rent is less than 1k in an area that is not a project.

My surprise is how many Nigerians make at least 22m a year never mind save that much? 10% of the population?

If 70% of Nigerians live on one dollar daily in their own country, why expect every Nigerian abroad to use your 22m yearly saving as a benchmark for success?

Some Nigerians probably less that 22m a year abroad but live in a sane society, their kids get great education and health care and don't have to local govt, state govt and FG in one to have borehole water, electricity and security via maiguard.

Our leaders go to that same America to get great medical care at the expense of the public purse.
You don't have to compare your savings with those of people abroad. Look inwards and do what is right for you.

Depends what you do in America. If you work for somebody or company, I don't care if you are a doctor, engineer or lawyer, or mere warehouse worker, your income will be limited by tax even if you live frugally because you have no control of your taxes and you will shed almost 50% in taxes if you make more across taxes (federal, state, property and estate). Lets say you make $150k, government collect almost $75k in taxes across. You are left with $75k, after your house, car, emergency and personal expenses, you re left with $10-20k in the bank every yr. You can live a comfortable life but you will never be wealthy!

Now, if you own your own business, not mom and pop kiosk, I mean real business over $500k in revenue, you will have more control of your taxes. Once you understand how America works, which most Nigerians or black immigrants never understand anyways...just living the American dream blindly( big house and nice cars) and fatally in debt, you will know that America rewards business owners and entrepreneurs. Most Asian immigrants understand this which is why they own their own business and don't work for people!

Any Nigerian you know that is very very wealthy in America, has his/her own big business. These are not small boys and girls, they have over 5 employees (that's over $200k/90million in payroll a year assuming $45k each employee a yr), business location cost $500k-$5million. They rarely pay taxes because their business give them that advantage. Go and read why and how the rich in America pay zero to no taxes...actually government doesn't want you to if you create job, invest or an entrepreneur!

The worst advice you can give anyone is to invest in Nigeria especially property. Over the course of your life the real value of most Nigerian properties will fall because the Naira always falls and we are effectively a dollar economy. Ask the average middle class Nigerian pensioner if the investments they made 40 years ago are giving them a comfortable living in retirement today.

if you bought property in lekki 7 years ago, the value hasnt really gone up but wheras dollar was 150 in 2015, it is 460 today so your property for all intents and purpose has fallen 66%!!! it is only worth 1/3 what it was worth in 2015!!! If you bough property abroad and are collecting rent on it. Not only has your property retained it's value at the very least but your rental income is in forex so whenever naira falls your naira income just goes up to match!

If you want to invest in property invest abroad so your rental income is Naira proof. Anybody investing in naira assets should understand that in 20 years time naira will be N2000 or N3000 to $1
