As the Oodua Peoples Congress celebrated the arrest of the alleged Fulani warlord, Iskilu Wakili, the police waded in. The celebrations were cut short and the purported villain became the victim!

The OPC made some mistakes the Yorubas might live to regret for a long time. They have been accused of murder and arson. The house of Wakili, a 75-year-old blind man was razed and a woman was reportedly burned to death in the house.

Wakili who appeared to be in a bad shape might also seek damages from the OPC. This might run into millions of naira. Already, three members of the OPC have been arrested.

Here are the four major mistakes made by the OPC, in the arrest of the allegedly dangerous Fulani herdsman:

(1) Arresting without strong evidence:

Much about Iskilu Wakili has been about rumours lying around in the media space. Hard evidence hasn't been brought forward. If the OPC can't present arms and ammunition found in his possession or confessions to crimes from his lieutenants, there will be a big problem and consequences might follow.

(2) Burning of Wakili's house:

Jungle justice is never the way forward. Nigeria has written laws. Every criminal is deemed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction. The destruction of Wakilu's house and the alleged killing of a woman remain heinous crimes under Nigeria's constitution and I pray the events never took place because the law will come hard on the perpetrators.

(3) Filming the arrest of Wakili

Anyone who must have heard about the reported criminal activities of Wakili wouldn't have envisioned him to be an elderly, frail and blind man. The video of his arrest as uploaded on social media, attracted more sympathy than outrage. Wakili looked as if he was going to die any minute. He could barely talk. The video uploaded by the OPC or those connected to them must have irked the Fulani community and their sympathizers, prompting them to take actions.

(4) Keeping the police in the dark:

From the statement released by the Oyo State Police Command, it was oblivious of the security operations of the OPC. Although the OPC did the right thing by handing over the suspects to the police, the event would have attracted the end result if the OPC worked with the police to effect the arrest of Wakili.

These are the costly mistakes I have deduced from the arrest of Wakili which many fear might throw Nigeria into another civil war as experienced in 1967. The raid of Wakili's camp has been described by some quarters as an act of ethnic cleansing. If this claim stands, it threatens the unity of Nigeria as well as its internal security.

President Muhammadu Buhari who is alleged to be in favour of the Fulanis will seize this opportunity to wield the big stick.
