A Nigerian airline United Nigeria finally names Enugu as its operational hub!!!

If this airline continues to use Enugu Intl. airport as its operational hub, it will massively improve the airport's viability especially when this young airline decide to begin conducting international flights from Enugu. Hopefully, more people will know about the existence of this airline to patronize them. The fact that they are the first and only Nigerian airline that will use Enugu as it's aviation operational hub should encourage people to patronize them because most of their mechanics, staff etc will live in Enugu and contribute economically to the city and the state. The way other airlines contribute to Lagos, Abuja and Kano.

Currently, the airline flies to 8 destinations:
1. Lagos (To and From Enugu, Port Harcourt, Owerri, Benin, Warri)
2. Abuja (To Asaba)
3. Enugu (To Lagos and Abuja)
4. Owerri (To Lagos and Abuja)
5. Asaba (To Abuja)
6. Port Harcourt (to Lagos and Abuja)
7. Benin (To Lagos)

Kudos to United Nigeria airlines for making Enugu their hub. I agree that this move will be a great boost to Enugu’s GDP.

I also think Air Peace will set up their MRO facility at the Enugu airport

Why is almost all the roads in Enugu have open gutter? Seriously it makes the city dirty and villagish. I came there from Portharcourt during Christmas no street light, no night light everywhere is just dark and is even the most developed place I visited. Enugu need to upgrade seriously, when Sullivan was Governor Enugu is bubbling with life but this village man currently just spoiled everything Tue!

Nike Lake Resort Enugu.

This place really looks nice.

I don't know why the hotel is not well marketed and presented.

They can create boat carnival and rake in tons of money from visitors who are not hotel residents.

Government should try and hands off things like this. They should sell the place off to private entrepreneurs.

Image making a deal with Protea or Hilton group to manage the place.

The place will be turned around to an international 5 star hotel.

Ugwuanyi hails United Airline for making Enugu operational hub.

governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has expressed appreciation to the management of United Airline for making the state its operational hub.
This is also as the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) revealed that the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, has recorded 600 percent growth in passenger traffic in two years.

At the airline’s inaugural flight, which took place at the Enugu airport, the governor who was represented by his deputy chief of staff, Prof. Malachy Okwueze, said the company didn’t make any mistake by making the state its hub. He assured that the state government will give them all the support they need and assured them of peace and security.

“Enugu state government is excited to welcome United Nigeria Airline. We congratulate the company, particularly, the chairman of the airline for this very giant feat. We are excited not only because United Nigeria is now flying into Enugu but particularly because Enugu is the operating hub. Enugu is the best state where any business can thrive. It is a home of peace and the safest State in Nigeria.

“I can assure you on behalf of the governor that you have not made any mistake to make Enugu your hub. The state government will give you all the encouragement and we will continue to support you. We are glad to welcome you and we will continue to partner with you,” Okwueze said.
Commenting on the development, the airport terminal manager, Cecilia Oguama, revealed that the passenger traffic at the airport has increased from 1000 in 2019 to over 6000 in 2021, a feat she said is as a result of more airlines operating inbound and outbound flights.
She said: “The traffic in and out of the airport has increased tremendously. We are now having between 6000 and 7000 passengers weekly. Before COVID19, we had less than 1000 passenger traffic because we had only one airline then. In 2019, we only had Air Peace operating but now we have four others operating regularly including United Airline.

“We have close to eight flights daily and United Airline has made Enugu their base, so they would enjoy tremendous support from the airport. Cargo movement has not started yet because the international terminal hasn’t opened for operations.’’
Speaking on the United Airline’s flight schedule and plans for expansion, the company’s station manager, Chika Adeyanju, said they decided to use Enugu as their hub because other airlines use either Abuja or Lagos and they wanted to be different and also tap from the many opportunities the state has to offer.

“We use Enugu as our operational base because we noticed that most airlines have their operational base in Abuja, so we wanted to make a difference, we decided to start from Enugu so that things will be normalised.
“Currently our destinations are Lagos, Abuja, Enugu, Asaba, Owerri and Port Harcourt for now. These places are not saturated and we need the competition.

Our unique selling point is safety and on-time departure. We have four aircraft and more are expected. Since we are starting with domestic, it is viable for us to start with small aircraft. As time goes on, we will be having up to four or five flights into Enugu,” Adeyanju said.
Speaking at the occasion, the chairman of the airline, Dr. Obiora Okonkwo, said the short-term goal is to consolidate, establish all its routes and then work on expansion. He also said the airline wants to expand beyond Nigeria, starting from the West Coast.
“We can see that there is a gap in this industry and we have not made any mistake to make Enugu aviation hub. The state government will give us encouragement and we are driven by service to humanity.

“Our short term goal is to consolidate, establish all our routes and then work about expanding. We want to expand beyond Nigeria, starting from the West Coast. The market is huge and there is need for a lot of aircraft. It might surprise you to know that we had full load in all the routes we operated on the day of our inaugural flight. We are prepared for the competition. Those who are in the business should be worried because we are new. We think that within the next three months we shall be able to expand our routes,” Okonkwo said.

There is Air Peace operating and now there are four others operating regularly including United Airline.

This is good for economic development. The workers of these airlines will need accommodation in the city and others.

Manufacturing should be intensified in the state to service those in Benue, Nassarawa, Plateau, etc, etc.

Investors would by so doing create a corridor of economic power in the area to de-congest existing corridors.

Please who lives or can tell about living at Agbani road.
I'm looking to relocate to Enugu and looking for a nice area to move in to.
I see a lot of good reviews about Independence layout, but I'd be working at Agbani road.
What do you think please?
Agbani Road is an okay place to live, nothing spectacular though and it cannot be compared to Independence Layout. The good thing is that rent is cheaper there.

I just want to contribute in sharing this video so that those of you with recalcitrant relatives in the north can convince them to move to other places or come home with their families NOW!
Even if they don't want to return, they should at least send home their wives and children.

We know Igbos in the north are the most stubborn characters in thinking once their neighborhood is calm right now, it must remain so forever. They also pay little attention to the fact that once things start and reprisals in the south follow, even to run away become blocked. Let them listen now and not come back to say nobody warned them or convinced them to steer clear of the danger looming in northern Nigeria.

Nobody should blame anyone if they fail to heed the message stvpidly saying onwelo if na eme.
Na dem wey dey risk the lives of their children for pennies they are picking in the north, na dem f00lish pass. Some of their children could become the Dangotes of tomorrow if they they don't risk the lives of these children by keeping them in the north under the current situation.
Waiting for Governors to issue a mass return call WILL NEVER HAPPEN as the Caliphate has already warned them "to keep their states safe" or they will impose state of emergency on them.

I want to use this medium to plead with Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to complete the tarring and reconstruction of the Ndiaga-Akupo road from the Abakaliki expressway to the Nenwe-Amagunze road. Any government that wants to maintain Enugu's position as the best planned city in southern Nigeria must pay very close attention to the development taking place around its suburbs.

The central importance of this road in the development of the Enugu mega-city cannot be over-emphasized. It also provides as very short cut to Abakaliki expressway and the airport from the multiple new estates spring up in that axis of Enugu city.

This road had been on the drawing board for waaay too long, yet it has not been completed. Needless to say that this road opens up the whole of Enugu east and a lot of development are already going on in the area along this road!

Please someone close to the governor should bring this important road to his attention so that the needful is done now before the massive developments in the area make expansion of this critical road a mission impossible in the near future.

Enugu govt commences first flyover bridge project located at Nike Lake/T-Junction

*Closes road, midnight of Monday, March 8

*Announces five designated route diversions

The administration of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, has formally announced commencement of the first ever flyover bridge project by the state government, located at the intractable Abakpa Nike/Nike Lake/T-Junction road, in Enugu East Local Government Area of the state, on Tuesday, March 9, 2021.

Speaking when he inspected the project site’s readiness for work commencement, alongside the Commissioners for Works and Infrastructure and Housing, Engr. Greg Nnaji and Hon. Vitus Okechi respectively, the Commissioner for Information, Nnanyelugo Chidi Aroh, maintained that the government’s order announcing a shutdown of the road by midnight of Monday, March 8, stands.

Aroh who revealed that he led a state government delegation to also inspect the construction yard of the company handling the flyover, IDC Construction Limited, said that all was now set for the commencement of the project in earnest. He added that the contractor assured that he would deliver the project before the end of 2021.

The Information Commissioner said the flyover project, when completed, would ease traffic gridlock in the area.

Also speaking, the Works Commissioner, Nnaji, stated that the contractor had been fully mobilized and was ready for the take-off of the project, pointing out that five roads have been designated for public use as diversions.

Engr. Nnaji who said that the five designated roads are being announced on air, listed them to include, Abakpa Nike Last Bus Stop-Oda Ngene- Umuchigbo-Nike Harmony Estate Adoration Road Junction; Bishop Shanahan- Ugbene 11-Ugbo Ndafe-Ama Owelle- Alulu-EELG HQ-Nkwor Nike Junction, and Emene-Adoration Ministries Pilgrimage Center- Harmony Estate- Umuchigbo bye-pass.

Others are Abakpa Nike Road-Liberty Junction- Ogwuagor- Uzo Aku Layout- Umuchigbo Harmony Estate Adoration Pilgrimage Centre, and Nike Lake Road- Ugwueke Junction- Igwe Edward Nnaji Palace- Enugu East Development Center-Amangwu Umuenwene - Oda Ngene- Umuchigbo Harmony Estate Adoration Pilgrimage Centre.

Gov. Ugwuanyi had inspected the designated road diversions to ensure their accessibility and readiness prior to closure of the Nike Lake/T-Junction road for construction work.

Clarifying further, the Information Commissioner, Aroh, noted that the state government has erected road signs and massive billboards to redirect motorists and road users accordingly, in the affected areas.

“Part of our responsibility is to once more inform the people that we are shutting down this road by 12 midnight; we have created five diversions; the announcements have been there in the radio; at the point of each diversion, we have put road signs; we are not stopping at that, we are going to put bigger billboards; we are going to ensure that our people don’t suffer too much while this massive work is going on,” Aroh said.

According to the Works Commissioner, “our responsibility in the next 48 hours is to ensure that work starts in earnest. Three links to T-Junction would be closed by 12 midnight today; part of why we are here is to see the preparedness of the contractor. Over there, you can see the concrete blockages, by tomorrow the actual setting out will begin.

“The five designated lanes for diversion are on air, we will all make sure that this big project is realized; Enugu people are waiting, the word is waiting, it is a state-of-the-art bridge and we can’t wait any longer to have it.

“The state government has been very proactive in planning for this construction; mid last year, we commissioned the first by-pass, Nike Road by-pass, it is in anticipation that we will do this project. From just after Nike Road, you head to Umuchigbo, Harmony Estate layout, Adoration Pilgrimage Centre and Orie Emene, it is one of the major roads that will take traffic, especially articulated vehicles. We advise all articulated vehicles to take that route.

“Then, if you are coming from NOWAS, get to Zenith Bank, UBA, you go left, then at a Roundabout, you turn and hit Dental Technology, then you tee off to Bishop Shanahan, that is on the lext axis, you now meet Ugbene 2, Ugbo Ndafe, then to Local Government Headquarters.

“If you are also coming from the Timber, very close to where we are now, we have recently put some culverts to ensure that people pass, in anticipation that this project will go through; when you pass through that place, you go through Igwe Edward Nnaji Palace, you now come to the Development Centre, you take the Old Road, and still hit Umuchigbo.

“If you are coming from Abakpa Nike, Nike Grammar School, you cross the bridge, you come to St. Theresa, you tee off to the right, to Ogwuago, from Ogwuago you go down to Ugwuaku Layout, you are at the same Nike Lake Harmony bypass.

“The collector road, the main road that takes all the traffic, it was our proactiveness to make sure that the road was done; you can now see the relevance, the vision of the Enugu State Government in doing things in order. That road was given a priority and it is now living up to expectations.

“We are appealing to our people to be patient with us; they should put enough care while passing through these roads; it is going to take some time but it is worth it.”

On his part, the project manager of IDC, Mr. Youssef Zghaib said the company was ready to hit the ground running, assuring that, “we were awarded this project with the duration of one year, but we promise to do our best to deliver within less than one year for sure.

“We don’t want to reach the deadline; with the promise that the funds are available, for sure we will try to deliver before the end of 2021, we deliver projects on time; we have the machines; what you see here is a very small sample of what you will see in the next two weeks.”

In a remark, the Chairman of Enugu East Local Government Area, Hon. Alex Ugwu commended Gov. Ugwuanyi for the landmark project, stressing: “Our able governor has done all the needful, the contractor will now go to the site, any structure he marks, we will inform the owner to remove it.”

Enugu State is in the hands of God!

The Unity Park is a fantastic and exclusive idea of developing world class relaxation areas in Enugu to boost tourism.

No matter how we feel about the Governor, he must be commended for putting this great idea to reality. I hope they find a way to add children swing area and a good way to fill up those artificial ponds to add the added beauty of boat sailing in the park for children. I hope the government will finally contract the management of the park out to a private firm who will make sure the toilets are washed and clean, will probably sink a bore hole or a well there to ensure toilets are flushed and water is always in the artificial lake. Also, if they air-condition the conference room inside the roaring lion, it could easily be rented out for meetings or even small parties etc.

I hope they contract out the management of the park to a private company that pays a fixed rate every month to the state government similar to the management of the Port Harcourt pleasure park. The company will maintain the park in a pristine state, and improve the facilities specific facilities named in the contract in the park. A gate fee of N500 naira for adults and free for children less than 10 years will be reasonable if they install those fun outdoor activities for children.

If the unity park is carefully developed and fun activities especially for children are introduced in a secluded part of the park, it has a huge potential of becoming a major tourist attraction and huge source of revenue for the state.

By the way, this vlogger has lots of nice Enugu content in her channel. You will see A LOT about Enugu through the eyes of a foreigner when you subscribe to her channel.

ABANDONED OGURUGU AIRPORT AND SEA-JETTY (SEA PORT):
TALES OF THE ABANDONED TREASURES & GLORY OF UZO UWANI LGA

Ogurugu, a coastal town which, if it had been handled differently by the succeeding governments, should today be at similar level of development and city awareness with Onitsha Anambra State because of its (Ogurugu) historical connection with the early European (whitemen) traders, the UAC, JOHN HOLT etc who traded in local produce like Palm Oil, Palm kernel, timber logging, fishes etc. All these goods/wares were either produced or brought to OGURUGU port from all over Igbo Nsukka from where they were shipped to Onitsha, Lokoja and outside world.
Today the OGURUGU town is a ghost of it's itself, artifacts of European presence littered the town.
THE OGURUGU AIRPORT
Airport in OGURUGU Uzouwani may sound like story from the space or a fairytale but it's empirically true and real.
It was an Airport said to be awarded by the Military regime of Gen Olusegun Obasanjo. At the airport, we found solid structures in a vast expanse of land. We found the runway, the tarmac, the control stations and other things that make up an Airport or Airstrip with a glaring evidence, that the facility has suffered total abandonment, deterioration and looting.
The most surprising finding we made at the Airport was the conversion of the Aerodrome facility to personal use by the former Minister of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Charles UGWU. It was revealed that he was using it for milling and re-bagging of rice, using his Company name, Tara Agro Company Ltd.
In our chat with a community leader named ONWUEME MOSES who happens to be the son of the Eze Ala that donated the land to the Federal Government for the construction of the Airport between 1977 and 1978, we were made to understand that a man named CLEMENT CHINEDU from Imo state claimed that he bought the facility from the Federal Government and sold it to the Fmr. Minister, MR. CHARLES UGWU, the Director of TARA AGRO COMPANY LTD.
We also got privy information that the Fmr Minister doesn't want people to know about the existence of such a facility.
In our interview with one of the Supervisors that worked at the Airport in the 70s, he noted that work stopped at the Airport at the inception of a new government in 1979 and the then civilian government shifted focus away from OGURUGU Airport.

THE OGURUGU SEA-JETTY
Another big modern facility in OGURUGU town that has been abandoned is the Ogurugu inland Sea Port from where Colonialists entered Northern Igbo Land and where the entire Igbo nation in this side of the world traded their goods and transported their agricultural products to the outside world especially, through Onitsha.
We were also shown debris of what is left of the Commercial Bank used by Colonialists and Igbo Traders at the Port for transactions in Ogurugu.
From the facts we gathered, the proper reconstruction of the Sea Jetty and the proper dredging of the Omambala/Mabolo River
was attracted by our Govnor, Rt Hon Ifeanyi UGWUANYI when he was the Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Marine and Ports Authority. UGWUANYI ensured that the development of the sea jetty commenced in earnest with some construction on the ground, however, the locals we chatted with, stated that work is no longer going on at the Sea Jetty and that they do not know why such life-saving and sustaining facility should be abandoned

Ethiopian Airlines to restart flight operations to Enugu, Kano airports soon

Recently, Ethiopian Airlines operated a special flight to Malam Aminu Kano International Airport as part of the gradual process of reopening the Airport.

Ethiopian Airlines is the only international airline that operates to Akanu Ibiam International Airport Enugu since it was gazetted as an International Airport.

It is also one of the airlines that operate into MAKIA in Kano. Ethiopian has been operating in Nigeria since 1960 and has stayed with Nigeria during good and difficult times.

When the Abuja Airport was closed for repairs ET was the only international airline that flew to the alternative airport in Kaduna.

Ethiopian Airlines is eager to provide our passengers with our traditional world-class service in the most technically advanced aircraft in the world.

Ethiopian is the first airline to bring the B787 Dreamliner to all four airports in Nigeria. It was also the first to bring the Airbus A350 to Nigeria.
Before the COVID-19 lockdown Ethiopian Airlines operated to four airports in Nigeria. Since the gradual re-opening of the Airspace in Nigeria only Lagos and Abuja airports were allowed for international flights.

With the completion of the new airport terminals and further improvements in COVID-19 situation in Nigeria, the Federal Government has announced a phased Reopening of Kano, Enugu and Port Harcourt Airports for International flights.

Ethiopian Airlines will soon announce Schedules for flight operations to Enugu and Kano.

Glad to see Ethiopian airlines back to Akanu Ibiam International airport again! Tickets sale to Enugu has restarted on Ethiopian airlines website! However, their first flight to land in Enugu seems to be from June 1st, 2021.

Although the Hon. Minister of Aviation told us that Mallam Aminu Kano airport, Kano would open to international traffic on April 5th, in reality they took their first Ethiopian airlines flight on March 31st and have been running a 3X weekly schedule for now. So one hopes that the Hon. Minister will also use his good offices to ensure a smooth resumption of international flights services at Akanu Ibiam Intl. airport, Enugu.
