As the 2022 governorship election begins to gather momentum, a non-partisan and socio-cultural organization, Ekiti in Diaspora Development Initiatives (EDDI), has told the citizens to participate effectively in politics. In a statement in Ado Ekiti, on Wednesday, the EDDI National Coordinator, Mr. Ayodele Orebe appealed to well spirited Ekiti citizens not to abandon the political space for those he described as rogues and criminals. Mr. Orebe said Ekiti deserves the best political administration in the next political dispensation, saying those who have passion for development should take a plunge into the race and deliver the dividend of democracy to Ekiti people. The EDDI leader added that the group was conceptualized to promote and raise the political awareness of Ekiti citizens, which he said was presently at a low ebb. "The EDDI was conceptualized to promote a just, fair, and politically-engaged Ekiti society, where all citizens, regardless of socio-economic status in the areas of education, income, and occupation can be given a sense of belonging and treated as respectable integral part of governance. "They must actively participate in politics and influence public policy with the sole goal and objective of achieving good governance and delivery of the dividends of democracy to our people. "Democracy is about the people, everything centers and anchors around the people, but the moment the right people are not in government by allowing the wrong people to seize the power, then bad governance becomes entrenched and the populace will suffer. "To us as group of professionals, we perceived politics as a good and clean institution that needs pragmatic and conscience conscious people to drive it forward. Politics itself is not dirty. For us to get a clean and engaging politics that can drive development, good Ekiti people must get involved in the game". Mr. Orebe stated that EDDI, in partnership with local and international organizations, will work to inspire the advancement of Ekiti people in the areas of government transparency, accountability, and social-cultural improvements. "With these lofty ideas, government will be made to be responsive to the needs of Ekiti populace, both at home and in the diaspora". Orebe called on state and federal governments to ensure that the Covid 19 vaccine is made available to the citizens to checkmate unwarranted death in the second strain of the global infection. On the rising wave of insecurity in the country, Orebe appealed to all citizens to register with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and get their National Identity Numbers (NIN), for genuine database that will help in checkmating criminals and financial fraud in the system.
