Overview The provisional Balance of Payments (BOP) estimates for Q4 2018 showed a significant improvement in the BOP outcome as the overall balance of payments recorded a surplus of US$2.80 million compared to a huge deficit of US$4,542.08 million and a surplus of US$6,180.40 million recorded in the preceding quarter and corresponding period of 2017, respectively. The current account balance (CAB) improved from a deficit of US$1,544.41 million in Q3 2018 to a surplus of US$1,104.57 million in Q4 2018. The financial account balance indicated a net acquisition of financial assets of US$2,327.91 million in the review period as against net incurrence of financial liabilities of US$4,615.17 million recorded in the preceding period. Current Account Balance The current account indicated a positive outcome during the review period, recording a surplus of US$1,104.57 million as against a deficit of US$1,544.41 million and a surplus of US$3,657.18 million in the previous quarter and the corresponding period of 2017, respectively. This development was largely attributable to the decrease in imports and payments on income (net). (Table 1, chart 1) Goods Account The surplus in the Goods Account increased significantly to US$6,793.60 million in Q4 2018 from surpluses of US$3,759.88 million in the preceding quarter and US$5,472.74 million recorded in the corresponding period of 2017 (Table 1, chart 2). Export earnings rose by 2.8 per cent to US$16,655.49 million in Q4 2018 when compared with Q3 2018. It also indicated an increase of about 27.6 per cent when compared to the corresponding Period of 2017. Earnings from crude oil and gas, which accounted for 93.8 per cent of total export earnings during the review period, increased by 2.1 per cent to US$15,620.90 million in Q4 2018 when compared with the preceding quarter. Earnings from non-oil and electricity exports increased by 15.0 per cent to US$1034.59 million in Q4 2018 when compared with the preceding quarter. Available data showed that payments for import of goods (fob) to the economy in the review period decreased significantly by 20.7 per cent to US$9,861.89 million below the level recorded in the preceding quarter. This was largely as a result of 19.9 per cent decrease in the imports of non-oil products. Services, Income and Current Transfers Net out-payments for services during the review period increased by 16.5 per cent to a deficit of US$8,287.57 million when compared with the level recorded in Q3 2018. When compared with the corresponding period of 2017, it indicated a much higher increase of about 76.9 per cent. However, the deficit in the income account (net) decreased by 10.8 per cent to US$3,713.84 million in the review period from a deficit of US$4,161.76 million recorded in the preceding quarter. When compared with the level in the corresponding period of 2017 it indicated an increase of about 24.5 per cent. The surplus in the current transfers (net) increased by 5.7 per cent to US$6,312.39 million in Q4 2018 when compared with the preceding quarter. However, the level of the surplus was 7.8 per cent higher than the level recorded in the corresponding period of 2017, Financial Account Provisional Q4 2018 BOP estimates for the Financial Account showed a overturn from net incurrence of financial liabilities of US$4,615.17 million recorded in Q3 2018 to net acquisition of financial assets of US$2327.91 million in the review period. This is also significantly lower than the net acquisition of financial assets of US$3,528.62 million recorded in the corresponding period of 2017 (Table 1, Chart 1). Direct, Portfolio and Other Investments Direct Investments inflow decreased by 28.3 per cent to US$314.44 million when compared with the preceding quarter of 2018. It, however, indicated a decline of 67.2 per cent when compared to the corresponding period of 2017. Portfolio Investments inflow to the economy decreased significantly to US$1,382.40 million in Q4 2018 from US$1,790.83 million and US$3,787.16 million in the preceding quarter and the corresponding period of 2017, respectively. However, other investment liabilities increased to US$1,421.26 million when compared with a reversal of US$3,070.76 million recorded in the preceding quarter. External Reserves The stock of external reserves as at end-December 2018 stood at US$42,594.84million, indicating a depletion of 0.03 per cent when compared with the level in the preceding quarter. However, when compared with the corresponding period of 2017, it indicated an accretion of 8.2 per cent. The level of external reserves could finance approximately 13.0 months of imports, compared with 10.3 and 15.6 months of imports cover recorded in the preceding quarter and the corresponding period of 2017, respectively. These were, however, above the WAMZ and global benchmarks of 6 and 3 months, respectively. SOURCE: https://brandspurng.com/2019/03/13/oil-sector-accounts-for-93-8-of-export-revenue-in-q4-2018-cbn/

The UK’s Civil Aviation Authority has banned the Boeing 737 MAX from operating in or over UK airspace “as a precautionary measure”. The decision comes after an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing Max 8 crashed on Sunday, killing 157 people on board, the second fatal accident involving that model in less than five months The UK joins Malaysia, Singapore, China and Australia, in banning the aircraft. The CAA said the directive would remain in place until further notice. Tui Airways and Norwegian both operate the Boeing Max 8 in the UK as part of their fleets. “The UK Civil Aviation Authority has been closely monitoring the situation, however, as we do not currently have sufficient information from the flight data recorder we have, as a precautionary measure, issued instructions to stop any commercial passenger flights from any operator arriving, departing or overflying UK airspace,” a CAA statement said. A Tui statement confirmed their 737 Max 8 aircraft were grounded following the CAA’s decision. “Any customers due to fly home today on a 737 MAX 8 from their holiday will be flown back on another aircraft. “Customers due to travel in the coming days will also travel on holiday as planned on other aircraft,” Tui said in a statement. Which other countries are affected? Singapore’s Changi Airport is the world’s sixth busiest and a major hub connecting Asia to Europe and the US. But only a handful of airlines operate Max aircraft in and out of the country. No Australian airlines operate the Boeing 737 Max, and only two foreign airlines – SilkAir and Fiji Airways – fly the model into the country. Shane Carmody, who is in charge of aviation safety at Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority, said the suspension would remain in place while the organisation awaited “for more information to review the safety risks”. Several airlines and regulators around the world have already grounded the Max 8 model following the crash. South Korea has asked Eastar Jet, the only airline in the country to own Max 8s, to ground its planes from Wednesday, while Malaysia has banned the jets from its airspace, according to the AFP news agency. Singapore’s aviation authority said the affected airlines include SilkAir, which operates six Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft, as well as China Southern Airlines, Garuda Indonesia, Shandong Airlines and Thai Lion Air. In the US, the country’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) told airlines on Monday it believes Boeing’s 737 Max 8 model to be airworthy, despite the two fatal crashes. Southwest, which has the largest fleet of 737s in the US, said it was offering customers booked on flights using the jet the chance to change their reservation, but would not be offering refunds. Rival American Airlines said its “standard policies for changes still apply”. What is a Boeing 737 Max aircraft? The Boeing 737 Max fleet of aircraft is the latest in the company’s successful 737 line. The group includes Max 7, 8, 9 and 10 models. By the end of January, Boeing had delivered 350 of the Max 8 model out of 5,011 orders. A small number of Max 9s are also operating. The Max 7 and 10 models, not yet delivered, are due for roll-out in the next few years. The Max 8 that crashed on Sunday was one of 30 ordered as part of Ethiopian Airlines’ expansion. It underwent a “rigorous first check maintenance” on 4 February, the airline said. Following last October’s Lion Air crash in Indonesia, investigators said the pilots had appeared to struggle with an automated system designed to keep the plane from stalling, a new feature of the jet. It is not yet clear whether the anti-stall system was the cause of Sunday’s crash. Aviation experts say other technical issues or human error cannot be discounted. Eyewitnesses say they saw a trail of smoke, sparks and debris as the plane nose-dived. What have US authorities said? US aviation officials have said the 737 Max 8 is airworthy and that it is too early to reach any conclusions or take any action. Boeing has confirmed that for the past few months it has been developing a “flight control software enhancement” for the aircraft. Paul Hudson, the president of FlyersRights.org and a member of the FAA Aviation Rulemaking Advisory Committee, nonetheless called for the plane to be grounded. “The FAA’s ‘wait and see’ attitude risks lives as well as the safety reputation of the US aviation industry,” Mr Hudson said in a statement on Monday. The UK has risen one place, to third, in a global ranking of most promising countries in the world for technology breakthroughs that have a global impact. KPMG’s 2019 Technology Innovation Hubs report sees the UK trailing slightly behind the US and China, in a ranking of countries expected to produce the most disruptive technologies. The UK and Japan were almost tied in last year’s survey with the UK coming in 4th place. This year, however, the UK moved ahead to secure the bronze place, whilst Japan was ranked fourth, Singapore was ranked fifth and India dropped from third place to sixth. The global survey of 740 business tech executives globally from companies, venture capital firms, and angel investors that focus on technology, also found that nearly 60 per cent believe that it is likely or very likely that the technology innovation centre of the world will move from Silicon Valley by 2023. Separately, the tech industry leaders surveyed tabbed New York as the global city most seen as becoming a leading technology innovation hub outside of Silicon Valley over the next four years whilst London maintained the same position as the 2018 report – coming in the third spot which it shared with Tokyo. Ian West, UK head of TMT at KPMG: “It is great that the UK’s technology sector is appreciated as the most promising market for technology breakthroughs in Europe, and that London is seen as a major hub for big data, fintech and a variety of digital technologies. Despite the uncertainties presented by political hesitations and other economic factors, the UK and London have not lost its shine when it comes to its technology pedigree.” Here are the top 15 cities seen as technology innovation hubs outside of Silicon Valley: 1. New York 2. Beijing 3. London and Tokyo 5. Shanghai and Taipei 7. Singapore 8. Seoul 9. Boston and Austin 11. Berlin 12. Hong Kong (SAR) 13. Washington D.C. 14. Paris 15. Tel Aviv More than $7.7 billion was invested in UK start-ups over the course of 2018 according to research by KPMG. This was more than 1.5 times the level invested in fast-growth businesses in Germany, and 2.6 times the levels of investment seen by the start-up ecosystem in France. “Technology underpins the competiveness and development of almost every sector. It is a key battleground for most economies and the UK must ensure it is a leader in this field. The UK’s investment in autonomous vehicle technology, artificial intelligence and robotics is therefore hugely encouraging and will make a real difference to the UK being seen as a tech destination of choice for scientists, entrepreneurs, investors and tech companies,” concluded West. The world’s largest food and beverage company believes that a gender-balanced workforce makes business sense as it helps to boost innovation and performance, which as a result, better serves the needs of its consumers. Nestlé’s Global CEO Mark Schneider announced the company’s acceleration plan to make gender balance a priority, based on three pillars: bold leadership, an empowering culture and a set of enabling practices. In the Central and West Africa Region (CWAR), Nestlé aims to bring the Gender Balance Acceleration Plan to life through its multi-pronged initiatives, such as trainings to raise awareness on gender biases, career development and mentoring programmes for women, gender-sensitive succession planning, offering breastfeeding rooms and nurseries at work, as well as the implementation of its Maternity Protection Policy. Driving innovation At Nestlé CWAR, increasing the number of women in the workforce and boosting gender balance is helping to drive innovation. Bunmi Etty-Mfon, Total Performance Management Manager for Technical at Nestlé CWAR, who has led factory efficiency for over eight years to deliver safe, quality products in Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Cameroon and Côte d’Ivoire, has encouraged and experienced this herself. “When there’s a good mixture of men and women, team-building activities tend to be more balanced, helping to develop greater empathy among individuals and teams. Diversity stimulates greater effort from everyone, leading to improved decision-making. “Also, as the majority of consumers in our region are women, it gives us great perspective to lead in innovation,” she said. Rahamatou Palm, Category Manager for our Nescafé business in Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Togo and Benin – and a member of the Cluster Management Committee of which half are women – agrees that diversity is key for the company’s growth. “Gender balance is important to complement the thinking between men and women, leading to more productive debates and innovative decisions. It also fights against discrimination to ensure a better, and more dynamic workplace,” she emphasised. Improving the company’s performance Nestlé CWAR is also actively enhancing the company’s performance by increasing the number of women in departments that traditionally hire men. To close the current gender gap, the Technical and Supply Chain Management departments are looking to recruit a majority of women as graduate trainees, and include at least one female candidate in the final interview stage. Efforts are also being made to increase the number of women working in factories across the region. Ibukun Ipinmoye, Factory Manager of the Flowergate Factory, which includes the first 100% female production line in Nestlé Nigeria, has noted an increase in productivity. “We soon realised that the female production lines are very productive thanks to their highly committed and collaborative spirit and their careful handling of the equipment. Gender diversity has helped to boost productivity,” he said. “As a result, we plan to introduce female operators to more complex lines to utilise their multitasking skills, and aim to hire female management trainees to 80%.” Gbenga Oladunjoye, Factory Manager for Nestlé Ghana, has also seen improved performance in his team. “My team is more productive, with readily available good talent and a wide diversity of ideas. Women have helped to ignite creativity, offered various perspectives and improved our business,” he said. Gbenga, who oversees the Tema facility and is part of the Country Management team, added: “They mostly make the decisions to buy products for their families so having women at Nestlé makes business sense.” Overcoming biases However, creating gender balance on the factory floors or in offices does not come without some obstacles. Pressure to conform to gender stereotypes, resistance from men, adapting work patterns to family life and maternity commitments, and the shortage of females in certain fields like engineering, are just some of the gender balance challenges that working women face. Julia Atta, Production Manager for Milks in Nestlé Ghana, was appointed as the first female production manager for Nestlé CWAR last year – marking a milestone for the company in the region. She explained that she went into this ‘non-traditional’ line of work for women to change mindsets and make an impact. But this came with its challenges. “For any women in a male-dominated environment, even a genuine reason can become a woman’s excuse. For example, I felt I had to turn down an opportunity to go into production because I got pregnant, even though factory management made me an offer. At the time, I was unsure it was the right decision to join, as production was not seen as an ideal environment for my ‘condition’,” Julia said. “Thanks to the support of management, I had another opportunity to take up a role outside of the country for five months. However, others made me feel like I had made the wrong decision to leave my young child behind – but I was determined to make it work.” Today, Julia heads the milk production and technical team, leading the production, quality, safety, cost and delivery of 130 tonnes of evaporated milk a day, while also developing her team of junior and senior employees. Women leaders inspiring other women Creating a solid pipeline of female talent across all levels enables more women to climb up the career ladder to top positions, which has a ripple effect of encouraging other women to achieve their goals. “Being a career woman is never a burden or added responsibility, but a platform to inspire and motivate the people you are lucky enough to impact,” Julia continued. “When a woman is appointed in a leadership role, some people believe this is because of a gender balance strategy and not based on merit. It must be based on non-discrimination, equal opportunities, competence and providing the right support for both men and women in the workplace. This is how we will be genuinely able to highlight and remove the roadblocks to career advancement at work,” she added. Gbenga Oladunjoye, Factory Manager at the Tema facility in Nestlé Ghana, emphasised that women at Nestlé inspire other women to follow suit, and said: “They enhance inclusiveness, advance opportunities and give hope to women worldwide that they can achieve the same too.” Building a strong pipeline of talent is key to gender balance Embracing diversity and increasing the number of women in leadership roles and in the workforce all make business sense at Nestlé CWAR – and for the company worldwide. This is part of its commitment to enhance gender balance in its workforce and empower women across the entire value chain. But this just doesn’t stop here. To help achieve this across the board, organisations need to build a solid and balanced pipeline of talent and invest in women’s education and training to create and instil diversity at all levels, and in all functions. “We recognise that gender balance, women’s rights, education for women and women’s empowerment are critical to Creating Shared Value – our approach to how we do business in creating value for both our shareholders and for society,” said Rémy Ejel, Market Head for Nestlé CWA Ltd. “It is also key to contributing to Sustainable Development Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls – and we encourage other companies to also make gender balance a priority,” Mr Ejel concluded. Social media is based on conversation. It works because people join in discussions – about other people and brands – that they are interested in. They want to learn more regarding what is being talked about as the conversation appeals to emotion in them. Copywriting greats, who have developed digital copywriting and content marketing courses, say that the most successful copy out there appeals to emotion in the reader. For example, if someone reads a piece put out by a company that sells retirement annuities, which makes them afraid that they have not saved enough for their retirement, they will be more likely to investigate the retirement annuity policies that the company has to offer. The same principle applies to social media. Conversations which appeal to people’s emotions are more likely to get them to engage with you, your company and/or your brand. There are a number of metrics that you can use to measure how engaged people are with your brand on social media as well as what messaging engages them most. These are the metrics you should be measuring in 2019. Comments Comments are self-explanatory. These are where a social media user takes the time to comment, with their own viewpoints, on your social media post. “These are important to measure,” says Lisa Schneider: managing director of the Digital School of Marketing, “as this is a true reflection of how engaged people are with your content because they’ve taken the time to digest what you’ve said and have put thought into a response to you.” To calculate your company’s engagement levels, pick a metric that is important to your business and that you will gauge your social media success by. For example, if the goal of your social media strategy is to get clicks to your website, tally up the number of clicks that a particular social media campaign generates. Divide the result by the reach and you will arrive at the engagement score. Mentions Similar to comments, mentions are where people will draw someone into a conversation on social media. These are significant to measure because they show you who exactly is worrying about your brand’s opinion and what the demographics of these people are. This is valuable target market research for you as you will be able to use the data you gather from this activity and will be able to target these audiences in other campaigns. Shares Lastly, it’s vital to measure shares as this shows how far your content has reached or spread. This is important as it will show you how large your potential audience is. An accredited social media course will teach you a lot more about how to measure social media engagement for your business. 1. The attention of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (“NERC” or the “Commission”) has been drawn to the allegations of fraudulent payments to the Olorunsogo and Omotosho power plants by the Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading Plc. (“NBET”) as widely reported in the press and other news media. 2. The attention of the Commission has also been drawn to disagreements between NBET’s Managing Director, Dr. Marilyn Amobi, and 2 employees of the organization – Mallam Waziri Bintube (General Manager/Chief Financial Officer) and Mallam Abdullahi Sambo (Deputy General/Head Internal Audit) – that arose shortly after Dr. Amobi’s resumption of office in August 2016. 3. The Commission considered the initial issues in contention between Dr. Amobi and the two employees to be an internal governance matter between employer and employee that fell within the scope of NBET’s Board to address and a letter conveying the Commission’s position on the matter was sent to the government. 4. The matter has since escalated from being a purely internal governance issue when the two employees wrote a letter dated 28 September 2018 to the Honourable Minister of Finance with a whistleblowing report requesting for urgent intervention to stem fraud in NBET. This letter was also copied to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Honourable Minister of Power, Works & Housing, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (“EFCC”), Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences (“ICPC”), Dr. Amobi and NERC. 5. The whistleblowing report highlighted 15 allegations of corrupt activities against the person of the Managing Director, Dr. M Amobi which may be categorized as “Market & Regulatory”, “Procurement” and “Internal Governance”. The report contained 14 allegations of internal governance/procurement issues and introduced a new allegation of corruption in electricity market settlement activities as follows – “Monthly over-invoicing of about N2billion to Olorunsogo and Omotosho generating plants contrary to NERC’s Order that where there is no active gas supply agreement (GSA) and gas transportation (GTA), capacity and energy number must be equal. Accumulated over-invoicing as at December 2017 was in excess of N30billion. Meanwhile, other thermal plants were being treated in line with the NERC Order. NBET’s heads of Legal and Power Procurement who ought to have defended the company colluded with Dr.Amobi to perpetuate the over-invoicing regime” 6. The Commission initiated the conduct of an investigation of the alleged N2Billion overpayment by NBET to Oloronsogo and Omotosho power plants pursuant to the powers of the regulator to approve Power Purchase Agreements NBET executes with generation companies and the imperative to maintain the integrity of the electricity market. The Commission’s overriding objective, is, therefore, to provide clarity to investors, lenders and other stakeholders on whether the management of NBET engages in fraudulent or inappropriate practices in the discharge of its statutory responsibility to the Nigerian electricity supply industry. 7. The independent investigation conducted by the Commission focused on the allegation of corruption relating to the purported over-invoicing of about N2Billion in the monthly market settlement payments due to the aforesaid 2 power plants on 18th and 19th February 2019. The Board of NBET has been requested to refer other allegations to relevant agencies for review. 8. The Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (“NESI”) is a very technical industry that is dependent on back-to-back intra-industry agreements between the various tiers of the value chain and back-to-back inter-industry agreements that exist between the upstream tier of thermal generators and gas suppliers. 9. NBET entered into Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with Olorunsogo Power Plc and Omotosho Power Plc with effective dates of 24 December 2013 and 20 August 2014 respectively. These PPAs govern the purchase of power from the 2 power plants and were approved by the Commission. 10. In conducting the investigation, the Commission interviewed top management of NBET who are involved with the management of PPAs, as well as the petitioners, Mallam Waziri Bintube and Mallam Abdullahi Sambo over a period of two days. 11. The findings of the Commission’s investigation are as follows – a. All payments made by NBET to the 2 power plants were in accordance with the terms of the PPAs. b. NBET and the 2 power plants executed appropriate waivers in accordance with the terms of the PPAs to address Condition Precedents. c. Payments made by NBET to the 2 power plants were done in compliance with the NERC TEM Order pursuant to the provision that sanctity of existing agreements be maintained. d. Payments to the 2 power plants, in compliance with the terms of the PPAs, were effected by Mr. Rumundaka Wonodi during his tenure as the Managing Director of NBET, Mallam Waziri Bintube during his tenure as Acting Managing Director of NBET and continued by Dr. Amobi upon her assumption on duty as Managing Director of NBET. e. It is noteworthy that Mallam Waziri Bintube provided legal justification for the payments to these 2 power plants vide an email dated 17 August 2016 to the Permanent Secretary (Power) of the Ministry of Power, Works & Housing wherein he stated that “for Olorunsogo and Omotosho PPAs, their capacity payments are based on the minimum capacity of 161.8MW in the first 2 contract years and 186.3MW from the third contract year onward. The minimum capacity was arrived at using their gas quantities and the government assured them of guaranteed gas supply during the privatization. It is important to note that NERC approved the minimum capacity and the PPA for Olorunsogo and Omotosho. So, at the moment, these IPPs get paid their minimum capacity if they are constrained by both gas supply and transmission”. f. Mallam Waziri Bintube and Mallam Abdullahi Sambo were unable to substantiate any claims of over invoicing to the tune of N2Billion each month by NBET in the payments to these 2 power plants; and they refused to admit that raising false allegations which they could not substantiate of over payment of N2Billion each month by NBET to the two Power plants, constituted a crime during their interviews; and could also not provide further evidence to substantiate any form of inappropriate payments being made to these two power plants as they had alleged. 12. These unfounded allegations by Mallam Waziri Bintube and Mallam Abdullahi Sambo have brought NESI into disrepute and weakened investor confidence in a sector where different agencies of government have been working collaboratively to address sector issues for the overall public good and in the interest of Nigeria. 13. All stakeholders should ensure that they rely on the evidence-based investigation before reporting on this matter and apply a keen sense of diligence to the treatment of the issue of allegations of corruption that Mallam Bintube and Mallam Abdullahi raised in order to ensure that the public gets a fair and balanced reporting. 14. The Commission has given Mallam Waziri Bintube and Mallam Abdullahi Sambo the opportunity to provide written submissions of their oral presentation to substantiate their claims. 15. The Commission hereby confirms that capacity payments to the Olorunsogo and Omotosho power plants by NBET are in line with the Power Purchase Agreement executed between the contracting parties and the provisions of the Supplementary TEM Order by the Commission. The public is therefore advised to discountenance the allegations of inappropriate payments to the Omotosho and Olorunsogo power plants through the reported over-invoicing of N2Billion in the payment of monthly capacity charges by NBET. Although an opposition victory would have been greeted by a probable knee-jerk excitement, which would have buoyed sentiment in the interim, the reelection of President Buhari portends a stable outlook for the economy and the financial market over the next 3 years. Specifically, GDP growth should sustain a gradual uptick, rising from 2.0% to 3.5% over his tenor. The inflation rate is likely to ease to a high single digit, and interest rate should revert to its long term 12%. Finally, foreign exchange will stay relatively stable but may weaken over the period, considering its historical ‘step’ trajectory. Consequently, we foresee increased foreign capital inflow, with Portfolio Funds (FPIs) taking a major share relative to Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs). This will support FX liquidity, with the Investors and Exporters window expected to continue to play a key role in ensuring currency market stability. Nevertheless, the multiple exchange rate environment may limit the inflow of FDIs, amid other concerns on regulations, fiscal/debt sustainability, and challenges in the operating environment. Accordingly, we expect the yield on government instruments to moderate sharply in the short to medium term while sentiment for equities would improve as investors revert to fundamental drivers of stock market performance rather than political uncertainties. The Firm saw an 11.87% increase in its revenue from ₦805.58bn in FY 2017 to ₦901.21 bn in FY 2018. This was majorly driven by a 7.39% growth in cement sales volume from 21.92 million tonnes to 23.54 million tonnes within the corresponding period. A 7.42% growth in Cement production volume (amounting to 22.80 million tonnes in FY 2018) accounted for 96.87% of the cement sales volume. Sales in Nigeria accounted for 68.61% of its revenue with the rest gotten from the Pan-African countries. Despite the rise in Cost of sales (9.12%), Selling & Distribution expenses (24.57%) and General & Administrative expenses (15.69%) Profit after tax (PAT) surged by 91.10% ( ₦390.34 bn in FY 2018 compared to ₦204.25 bn in FY 2017). The major reason for the surge in profit was the 204.25% decline in tax which occurred due to the reversal of tax paid in previous years as the firm’s approval for tax exemptions under the Pioneer Status Initiative was given in December 2018. The firms Return on asset (ROA) and Return on Equity (ROE) both improved to 19.99% and 39.56% from 18.26% and 26.14% the previous corresponding period respectively. Earnings per Share (EPS) almost doubled, rising by 95.97% to print at ₦22.83 in the year under review as against ₦11.65 the previous year. Tobacco plants can be used to produce an anti-inflammatory protein that can have powerful therapeutic potential for treating conditions like Type-2 diabetes, stroke, dementia and arthritis, more effectively and at an affordable price, researchers say. A team from the University of Western Ontario and Lawson Health Research Institute in Canada used tobacco plants to produce large quantities of a human protein called Interleukin 37, or IL-37 — naturally produced in the human kidney in very small quantities. “This protein is a master regulator of inflammation in the body, and has been shown in pre-clinical models to be effective in treating a whole host of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases,” said Tony Jevnikar, Professor at Western. “The human kidney produces IL-37, but not nearly enough to get us out of an inflammation injury.” While IL-37 has shown promise in animal models, it uses clinically has been limited because of the inability to produce it in large quantities at a price that is feasible clinically. Currently, it can be made in very small amounts using the bacteria E. coli, but at a very high cost. That’s where the tobacco plants come in and pave the way to provide treatments that are effective and affordable, according to the study published in the journal Plant Cell Reports. “The plants offer the potential to produce pharmaceuticals in a way that is much more affordable than current methods,” said Shengwu Ma, a scientist at Lawson. “Tobacco is high-yield, and we can temporarily transform the plant so that we can begin making the protein of interest within two weeks.” The team is now investigating the effect that IL-37 has for preventing organ injury during transplantation. When an organ is removed for transplantation and then transferred to a recipient, inflammation occurs when the blood flow is restored to the organ. That is a welcome development as farmers will have market for their produce. “And If the state government can replicate it in the two other senatorial districts, it will empower the farmers because the main issue with cassava is market. “Ethanol happens to be the most marketable item in the world right now because the world is moving away from using fossil fuel as it contributes to global warming”, he said. While saying the soil of the state is suitable for cassava cultivation, Adewumi said Ondo state is a major cassava producer in the country. He said cassava is one of the most important crops in the world noted that what Nigeria use #3trillion to import to the country annually can be derived from the crop. Other challenges confronting cassava farmers in the country according to Adewumi are land clearing and lack of equipment which is why farmers can not go into large scale production. Read: EQUITY & MONEY MARKET SUMMARY: Equity Market sheds 0.96%, reversing yesterdays gains. “Land clearing is a problem not only in Ondo state but in the Southern part of the country generally. In the north they don’t have this problem because their land is automatically cleared. “The normal way to do commercial farming is when you clear a large expanse of land, demarcate into plots and apportion to farmers. If we have our land cleared, may be 5000hectares or 10,000 hectares, then you can bring specialized equipment like planter to plant for everybody and that will collapse the cost of production. “But if what you have is 10hectares and it plants it in a day, what will it be doing in the next one year. “What we have been doing even in anchor borrowers programme is subsistence farming and that cannot take us anywhere in Nigeria. The cost of our production is about two or three times that of the international market, so we can not penetrate the international market”, he stressed. According to him, cassava is not being exported as being noised by some people because of high cost of production. While saying Nigeria is still backward in mechanised farming, Adewumi said other African countries have gone far. ” You scarcely find any other African countries where tractor is not surplus. But in some states in Nigeria, you hardly find ten serviceable tractors. I don’t think there is a country in the world where they still till the ground except Nigeria,” he lamented. The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) says it will no longer approve new registration for alcohol packaged in sachets. The Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, made this known recently in Ibadan at an interactive session with stakeholders in food and drugs manufacturing. The NAFDAC boss said that alcohol packaged in sachets had greatly contributed to increasing drug and alcohol abuse in society. Adeyeye said that the agency would also phase out the use of pet bottles used in the packaging of alcohol to address the increasing spate of abuse in the country. She said: “The agency remains undaunted in its efforts to reduce the incidence of substandard and falsified products as well as the smuggling and abuse of various products”. Adeyeye also said that in order to encourage local manufacture of herbal medicines, the agency was collaborating with traditional herbalists and researchers. “The agency is keen on having herbal medicines widely accepted as safe, hence we will continue to test them for clinical efficacy before giving full registration status. “We are also on a mission to turn herbal medicines into products that can be commercialised through collaboration between traditional herbalists and academic researchers. “In encouraging local manufacturing of medicines that are usually imported, the agency will enforce a five- year importation permit given to manufacturers with a mandate that they produce five years plan geared towards local manufacturing upon renewal. “In addition, the agency will also give five-year exclusive rights to companies to market their products without competition if they develop food and drugs that show demonstrable research and development innovation. “This development will be effective before the end of the first quarter of the year,” she said. Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System Plc (NIBSS) records have shown that about 36.8 million bank accounts have been linked to the Bank Verification Number (BVN) as of February 17 this year. This represents 51 per cent of the total number of active bank accounts, the Nigerian Interbank Settlement Scheme’s records have shown. The number of active bank accounts, according to the NIBSS data, is 71.79 million. BVN is a unique number for customers of banks in Nigeria, which contains biometric details of customers including the fingerprint of all ten fingers and facial image. The Central Bank of Nigeria through the Bankers’ Committee and in collaboration with all banks in Nigeria launched a centralised biometric identification system for the banking industry in 2014. The biometric identification was introduced to address identity theft, reduce exposure to fraud and enhance the banking industry’s chances of being able to fish out blacklisted customers, among others.
