Letters of Administration.
Letters of Administration are legal documents issued by a probate court that grant an administrator authority to manage the estate of a deceased person who died without a valid will (intestate)
. The administrator can then collect assets, settle debts, and distribute the remaining property to the beneficiaries according to the law. This document is crucial because, without it, the deceased's assets are legally vested in the state, and an administrator lacks the authority to act.
What they are for

Granting authority: The letters give an individual, called an administrator, the legal authority to manage an estate when there is no will.
Managing an estate: This includes the power to collect, manage, and dispose of the deceased's assets.
Settling debts: The administrator can settle any outstanding debts and liabilities of the deceased.
Distributing assets: The remaining assets are then distributed to the rightful beneficiaries as defined by law.

When they are needed

When a person dies intestate (without leaving a valid will).
When a will exists but there is no named executor or the named executor is unable or unwilling to serve, the court may appoint an administrator.

How to obtain them

Gather documents: Collect the deceased's death certificate, a list of beneficiaries, and details of assets and liabilities.
File a petition: Submit an application to the high court's probate registry.
Obtain approval: The court will review the application. The process may involve paying fees, publishing a notice of the application, and attending an interview.
Receive the letters: Once approved and all requirements are met, the court will issue the Letters of Administration, which grants the administrator the authority to proceed.
