CrimeWe Have Not Dropped Charges Against Diezani And Others - EFCC by Preshwap(op): 12:29pm On Nov 27, 2019
The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has been drawn to reports currently circulating in the social media, purporting that the Commission had dropped the criminal charge against a former minister of petroleum resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke and other persons indicted for money laundering.

The Commission enjoins members of the public to disregard the report which is false and misleading. At no time did the Commission withdraw the charge, which is still before Justice Muslim Hassan of the Federal High Court, Lagos.

The only development was that the Commission took a prosecutorial decision to split the initial 14-count charge to enable separate arraignment of the defendants following a spate of adjournments that prevented the arraignment of the defendants more than one year after the case was listed.

The charges were first filed on November 28, 2018. Since then, every attempt to arraign the defendants had been frustrated by one excuse or the other. In more than four times that the matter was called for arraignment, it was either that Lanre Adesanya was sick and bedridden in a London Hospital or Nnamdi Okonkwo was hypertensive and on admission in a hospital or StanleyLawson had had a domestic accident and could not appear in court.

It was clear that these recurring excuses were ploys to frustrate the arraignment. To get around this, the Commission took a deliberate decision, which was disclosed in open court, to separately prosecute the defendants in different courts. This explains why the four count amended charge brought against Dauda Lawal, a former executive director of First Bank, did not include other defendants, except the two who are at large( Diezani Alison-Madueke and Ben Otti).

CrimeMan Stabs His Younger Brother To Death Over N500 by Preshwap(op): 7:58pm On Nov 18, 2019
A middle aged man is currently on the run after stabbing his younger brother to death at Tokunbo house, Kamoru street, Orisumbare, Alimosho, Lagos .
.
It was gathered that their mom had dropped the sum of N500 for the younger brother, Chinaza, when she was stepping out on Sunday, November 17, 2019.

However, the elder brother, Fortune (IK), later requested for the money but Chinaza refused to release it. This angered the suspect and he went for a glass cup, broke it and stabbed his brother in the throat.

He then rushed him to the hospital, where he was confirmed brought in dead. Fortune later fled the hospital, returned home and lied that he was told to go and bring ATM to withdraw money. But he changed his cloth and disappeared.

RomanceFour Stupid Things People Say When You're Grieving From A Misfortune by Preshwap(op): 11:28am On Nov 18, 2019
We've all been in an unfortunate circumstance that made us grieve. Either the loss of a loved one, financial difficulty, dismissal from a job, failure in an exam, a painful breakup, a deal that fell through, betrayal, public embarrassment, family issues, a health challenge, or simply, clinical depression. What makes those events all the more painful is that they are mostly unforeseen-they take place suddenly when we are least prepared against their effects. The fact that we have no control over most of the difficulties in our lives can be extremely devastating.

Sometimes when these unfortunate events happen, we just want to shut the whole world out, and grieve alone, but usually, we seek out those we feel love us, and narrate our ordeal with them in order for them to lift us up with their words. Unfortunately, most things we hear during our period of difficulty do little to lift us out of our predicament, and some even make us feel more miserable. At times, it's better to just pet a person while they grieve or sob, without saying a word, than to make some stupid statements. Here are four stupid things that people say to a grieving person that do little to lift them out of their grief:

1, "Just forget it" or "It's nothing": This stupid statement is very common. A person has just been betrayed by a trusted friend, or has suffered public humiliation, and what comes to your mind is that it's nothing. You tell them to just forget it. It may mean nothing to you because you're not in their shoes, but it means something to THEM, and so you have to respect that. Human beings are wired to choose the easiest path in solving a problem. If it were that easy to forget it, or if it comes naturally, that would be our first line of action. They wouldn't grieve in the first place. Often, I've heard a person tell another after a breakup from someone they love, "Just forget him and move on!" as if it were that easy. We can say this in a different way that would not make a grieving person feel as if you're dismissive of their problem. Simply put-it's stupid to ask a person in deep pain to just brush aside the pain and get going.

2, "You're a man": So what? Who ever made the rule that a man is never meant to grieve? Who stereotyped men as robots without a heart? Immediately a man begins to show signs of sorrow or heartbreak, people begin to brandish this stupid statement. "You're a man. You're not meant to cry!" Says who, please? He had a wife, and she died suddenly, leaving him with a small child and a big hole in the heart. Let him grieve, please. He lost his job in a sudden retrenchment, and he is the head of the family. Why shouldn't he grieve? He's a man, and he's got a heart. If this is all you've got to say, just continue to pat him on the back in silence instead. It's a stupid statement not worth saying.

3,"God brought it to pass": God and Satan take the blame for a lot more than they are responsible for. When people misbehave, they blame Satan. When misfortune strikes, they blame God. God did not strike your child with a disease. "The Lord giveth, the Lord taketh," they say, resignedly. Well, the correct statement is "The Lord giveth, Satan stealeth, killeth, and destroyeth." The Bible says that no one should ever say when a misfortune comes, that God is behind his predicament, because God is incapable of doing evil (James 1:13). Rather, Satan is responsible for the stealing, killing, and destruction that abounds (John 10:10). Stop blaming God. He's innocent. Encourage the grieving person to wage the battle against the devil and claim their victory. Does it make sense that God would make you lose your source of livelihood and be begging on the streets? What kind of loving Father would do that? God might take a smaller blessing from you in order to give you a bigger one, though.

4, "You're a Christian": A Christian is someone who is like Jesus Christ. Which brings me to the question, "Did Jesus grieve when He was on earth?" "Did He weep?" Yes, He did. Jesus wept when Lazarus died (John 11:35). Jesus grieved when a group of people did not want Him to heal a man with a withered hand (Mark 3:5). The hypocrisy, stubbornness and wickedness of their hearts caused Jesus grief.

And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth your hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored as the other. (Mark 3:5-6)

Jesus was in severe agony when He prayed in Gethsemane (Luke 22:44). He cried out in frustration on the cross when He felt a separation between Him and God (Mark 15:34). Why do we think that Jesus was less human in emotions then we are? David is another example of a great man in the Bible that wept bitterly on some occasions. When his son Absalom died, he wept bitterly (2 Sam 18:33, 19:4). When his and his soldiers' wives and children were kidnapped, he and his men wept until they had no more energy to weep (1 Sam 30:3-4). David and his men did not arrive to see his city burnt down and the women and children taken captives, and get up in anger and say, "What nonsense?! Let's go after these people at once!" They first wept their eyes sore and their voices hoarse. In fact, they were only able to think clearly because they had no more energy to weep. If they had a little more energy to weep, they would definitely have wept some more. Being a Christian does not mean that your humanity is taken away. As a matter of fact, the Bible commands us to rejoice with those who rejoice, and grieve with those that grieve (Romans 12:15). These are simply examples from so many in the Bible. It's stupid to rebuke a person for grieving simply on grounds that they are Christian.

Foreign AffairsHong Kong Protesters Set Fire To Deter Police From University Campus by Preshwap(op): 10:18am On Nov 18, 2019
Riot police (R) make arrests as protesters (L) attempt to find safe passage out of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University campus in Hung Hom district of Hong Kong on November 18, 2019. Ye Aung Thu / AFP

Pro-democracy demonstrators holed up in a Hong Kong university campus set the main entrance ablaze Monday after police warned they may use live rounds, deepening fears over how nearly six months of unrest across the city will end.

The violence extended a dangerous new phase of the crisis, which over the past week has seen schools shut down, roads barricaded and Chinese soldiers briefly leave their local barracks to clean up streets.

China has refused to budge on any of the protesters’ key demands, which include free elections for the city of 7.5 million people and an end to the perceived erosion of liberties under China’s tightening grip.

Beijing has instead repeatedly warned it will not tolerate any dissent, and concerns are growing it could intervene militarily to quell the unrest.

On Monday several loud blasts were heard around dawn before a wall of fire lit up an entrance to the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), AFP reporters said, as what appeared to be a police attempt to enter the campus was repelled by protesters determined to hold their ground.

Police said they had fired three live rounds at a protest site near the university but no one appeared to have been hit.

Intense clashes
Intense clashes on Sunday saw a police officer hit in the leg by an arrow and protesters meet police tear gas with volleys of petrol bombs.

At the besieged campus, protesters hunkered down under umbrellas from police water cannon, and hurled Molotov cocktails at an armoured vehicle, leaving it ablaze on a flyover near the campus.

Police declared the campus a “riot” scene — rioting is punishable by up to 10 years in jail — and blocked exits as spokesman Louis Lau issued a stark warning.

“I hereby warn rioters not to use petrol bombs, arrows, cars or any deadly weapons to attack police officers,” he said.

“If they continue such dangerous actions, we would have no choice but to use the minimum force necessary, including live rounds, to fire back.”

Hong Kong police routinely carry sidearms, but until now they have only used them in isolated incidents during running street clashes. Three people have been shot, none of them fatally.

Faced with large groups throwing bricks and Molotov cocktails, they have relied on tear gas, water cannon and rubber bullets, but the new warning suggests a more proactive use of live rounds.

‘Helpless’
Fear gripped protesters inside the campus — whose occupation is a twist in tactics by a leaderless movement so far defined by its fluid nature.

One 19-year-old, who gave her name as “K”, said there was desperation among the 200 demonstrators she estimated remained.

“Some people were crying badly, some were furious, some agonising, because they felt hopeless as we were left no way out of the campus.

“We don’t know when the police will storm in.”

A few hundred metres from the campus, protesters erected barricades in the Tsim Sha Tsui and Jordan areas.

One 16-year-old, who gave his name as Joshua, said it was an attempt to draw police attention away from the university.

‘Blossom everywhere’
The nearly six-months of unrest has rocked previously stable Hong Kong, tipping the international financial hub into recession and frightening off tourists.

What began as a series of mostly peaceful demonstrations against a now-shelved bill to allow extradition to the Chinese mainland has morphed into wider calls for democracy and an inquiry into alleged police brutality.

Violence has worsened this month, with two men killed in separate incidents.

Demonstrators last week engineered a “Blossom Everywhere” campaign of blockades and vandalism, which forced the police to draft in prison officers as reinforcements, shut down sections of Hong Kong’s transport network and closed schools and shopping malls.

Chinese President Xi Jinping last week issued his most strident comments on the crisis, saying it threatened the “one country, two systems” model under which Hong Kong has been ruled since the 1997 handover from Britain.

On Saturday, dozens of soldiers from the Chinese People’s Liberation Army briefly left their Hong Kong barracks to help clean-up the streets.

It was a rare and symbolic operation, as the troops are normally confined to barracks and are meant to be only called out in a time of emergency.

Chinese defence ministry spokesman Wu Qian on Monday defended the operation, as he repeated warnings from Beijing that the military had the capabilities to quell the unrest.

“Ending violence and restoring order is the most pressing task we have in Hong Kong,” Wu said in Bangkok.

In a small — but largely symbolic — victory for the demonstrators, Hong Kong’s high court on Monday said a government ban on the wearing of facemasks at demonstrations was unconstitutional.

The ban has been widely flouted and police have found it all-but-impossible to enforce.

The Governor-elect of Bayelsa State, David Lyon, has promised to make the state great again.
He made the pledge in a tweet on Monday, shortly before he was declared the winner of the keenly contested governorship election in Bayelsa.
In another tweet, Lyon thanked the people of the state for electing him and for their support during the exercise which held on Saturday.

The tweets came before and after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) returned the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa as the winner of the election.
INEC’s Returning Officer and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, Professor Faraday Orunmuwese, declared Lyon as the winner after scoring the highest number of votes in the poll.
The APC candidate polled a total of 352,552 votes to defeat his closest rival of the PDP who scored 143,172 votes.
Following the declaration, President Muhammadu Buhari congratulated APC candidate on what he described as an “impressive victory”.
He, however, condemned the loss of lives in the state, particularly prior to the election and, commiserated with the families of the victims.
According to the President, it is unfortunate that pockets of unrest, mostly sponsored by desperate politicians were recorded during the poll.
He, therefore, promised to work with the incoming government to improve the lives of the people in Bayelsa, while ensuring the security of lives and property of all citizens.

PoliticsEdo- Gov. Obaseki Presents N177.6 Billion Naira Budget For 2020 To Edo Assembly by Preshwap(op): 9:55am On Nov 14, 2019
Obaseki presents N177.6bn budget proposal for 2020 to Edo Assembly, makes provision for new minimum wage

…hails Edo people for standing against godfatherism

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has presented a budget proposal of N177.601bn to the Edo State House of Assembly for the 2020 fiscal year, representing a 3.34 percent decrease compared to the 2019 budget.

The budget comprises N85.539 billion for Recurrent and N92.062 billion for Capital expenditure

, based on a $55 per barrel bench mark for crude oil and average daily production of 1.8m barrels per day as well as an increase in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), as a result of his administration’s reforms in revenue collection.

Top on the priority of the budget estimate christened ‘Budget of Consolidation’ are workers welfare, education, infrastructure, health, industrialization, sports, security, pension and gratuities.

The governor specifically earmarked N34bn for workers welfare, representing 31 percent increase in allocations for personnel cost, due to the government’s commitment to implementing the new minimum wage and building capacity of actors within government bureaucracy.

Others are Security Trust Fund, N2 billion; Pension and Gratuities, N14 billion; Contribution to the State Health Insurance Scheme, N1 billion; Primary Health Care Reform, N1 billion; the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (Edo-BEST) programme, N8 billion; Constituency Development Programme, N6 billion; National Sports Festival, N3 billion; and the Industrial Park, which will gulp N3 billion.

He said, “There is a 60 percent increase in allocation to the consolidated revenue fund charges. This enables the payment of monthly pensions and gratuities. It also covers the government’s monthly remittance to Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs) for current employees under the Contributory Pension Scheme. Edo State is ranked by the pension commission as one of the few states that is up to date with remittances to PFAs for its workers.

“In 2020, we will be hosting the National Sports Festival, which would assemble over 20,000 athletes across the country in the state for the festival. This is the first time the state is hosting the event. We have also been designated as one of the likely hosts for the U-20 Women World Cup next year.

“The Constituency Development Programme is to be implemented by the State House of Assembly and the Ward Development Committee. They are to harmonise efforts to effectively meet the most felt needs in the communities across the state.”

On the implementation of the Edo State Health Insurance Scheme, he said, “With the launch of the Edo State Health Insurance Scheme, the government is committing N1 billion as its contribution to the scheme, while we expect workers across all sectors to sign up to the laudable initiative, which enhances their access to quality healthcare services.”

Governor Obaseki, who predicted a positive outlook in 2020, said the budget will advance his administration’s reforms to build a total society in Edo and consolidate on successes of the last three years.

“The outlook for 2020 is quite positive, on account of improved rating of the country by the World Bank on the Ease of Doing Business index and the expected early passage of the 2020 budget. All these are expected to spur investor confidence, among other positives. We expect stable oil prices and sustained crude oil production volumes, as Federal Government deepens reforms through a mix of Fiscal and Monetary policies to engender growth and development.

“With the state replete with evidence of efforts at enhancing social welfare of our people, improving governance, and boosting economic development, we are committed to actualising the aspirations of our people to live in a just, fair, productive and progressive state.”

According to the governor, the 2020 budget is a statement of resolve to deepen socio-economic development and consolidate on the march for a truly productive and progressive state.

Obaseki noted, “While the stellar records of our stewardship in the last three years have left many of our peers in disbelief as to how we were able to achieve such laudable strides in the face of dire socio-economic and political challenges, we want to state unequivocally that we are marching on and are more determined than ever to deliver on our promise to industrialise and sanitise the state. This budget shows how we intend to demonstrate this resolve.

“Hence, one of our key priorities in the proposed 2020 capital expenditure framework is to strengthen capacity to meet up with the obligations to all actors of development in the state by expertly allocating our resources to projects that will impact the greatest number of people.”

The governor who recently celebrated his third year in office, assured the people of Edo State that his government will continue to break new grounds despite the machinations of enemies of democracy in the state.

He said, “I am also not oblivious of the fact that despite the machinations of enemies of democracy, Edo State continues to break new grounds. We also want to express our profound appreciation to the great Edo people for their undaunting spirit and resolve to never again come under the control of an avaricious godfather who seems obsessed with the desire to keep many under servitude for the benefit of the very few. I am indeed grateful to the people for their sustained support and faith in our government.”

He further thanked the Assembly for their unwavering support to the Executive arm of government, which has provided the right atmosphere to continue to initiate and implement bold reforms to engender inclusive growth and development in the state.

SportsSpain’s Record Scorer Villa Has Retired After 19-year Career by Preshwap(op): 4:53pm On Nov 13, 2019
Star striker David Villa, Spain’s top goalscorer, Wednesday announced he will retire next month, ending a glittering career in which he won the World Cup, European Championships and Champions League.
The 37-year-old Vissel Kobe striker said he will call it a day at the end of the 2019 J-League season after a 19-year career that took in Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Valencia while accumulating 98 caps for his country.

“I have decided to end my professional career and that I have decided to retire,” Villa told reporters in Kobe, his voice occasionally breaking with emotion.
“I’ve been thinking about this for a long time. This is the result of discussions I had with my family and the people around me… I wanted to retire from football, not be forced to retire from football,” he said.
Villa will become an investor in Queensboro FC, a new franchise based in the New York district of Queens that will play in the second tier of US football.
“Even though I will no longer be on the pitch, I will continue to be involved in football in other ways and will continue to contribute to the football world,” he said.
Villa played in three World Cups and was a member of the Spanish side that lifted the trophy in 2010 and won the European Championships in 2008, though he missed out on the 2012 triumph through injury. He scored 59 times for Spain, a national record.
His club honours include the 2010-11 Champions League, the 2011 UEFA Super Club, 2011 Club World Cup and two La Liga wins in 2010-11 and 2012-13 with Barcelona.
Villa scored the third goal for Barcelona at Wembley in the 3-1 win over Manchester United in the 2010-11 Champions League Final.
He won a third La Liga with Atletico Madrid in his one season there in 2013-14 after leaving Barcelona.
After leaving Atletico, Villa embarked on a successful spell in Major League Soccer for New York City, where he scored 80 goals in 124 appearances.
Villa was New York City’s first-ever signing and his haul included the first goal scored at Yankee Stadium in an opening home victory over the New England Revolution.
At Vissel Kobe, he played alongside fellow Spanish legend Andres Iniesta and German striker Lukas Podolski but the presence of the ageing foreign stars has done little to bring success to the ambitious Japanese club.
Vissel Kobe are currently languishing 10th in the J-League after 31 games — the same position they finished last year.
Villa has scored 12 goals in 26 appearances for Vissel. He is expected to play three more J-League matches as well as semi-finals and finals of the Emperor’s Cup.
His retirement ceremony will be on December 7, the day of his last J-League game.

SportsRonaldo's Frustrations At Being Subbed Understandable, Says Juve Boss Sarri by Preshwap(op): 7:24pm On Nov 11, 2019
Maurizio Sarri has no qualms with Cristiano Ronaldo's frustrations at being substituted and says Juventus must thank the superstar forward for attempting to play through the pain barrier.

Eyebrows were raised when Ronaldo was withdrawn after 55 minutes of Sunday's 1-0 Serie A win over AC Milan with his replacement Paulo Dybala scoring the winner in Turin.

It came just five days after Ronaldo was substituted with eight minutes remaining against Lokomotiv Moscow and in need of a goal, which eventually arrived from Douglas Costa deep into injury time of the Champions League clash.

Ronaldo gave a sulky reaction on that occasion and headed straight down the tunnel when brought off against struggling Italian rivals Milan.

Juve head coach Sarri again insisted Ronaldo – who reportedly left the Allianz Stadium before the final whistle – is struggling with a knee injury that is affecting his performance and believes his frustrated reactions are a result of that.

"We must thank Ronaldo, because he made a sacrifice to be there at all tonight in a difficult situation," Sarri told Sky Sport Italia.

"He did everything possible to play, but I saw he was not well and thought it best to take him off.

"It's only natural a player is going to be irritated to leave the pitch, especially when he worked so hard to be there.

"Over the last month, he has had this little knee problem, he had a knock in training and it hurt the collateral ligament.

"When he trains at high intensity or plays, it unbalances him, so he ends up overcompensating and it damages the calf and thigh muscles.
