LiteratureRe: Story: Taking Chances by princesa(op):

Daisy slumped unto her bed as soon as she hit her room. She couldn't rein in her tear, neither did she want to. Today was the climax of the teaming tension and anger that had hung over them since Sunday or maybe ever since they got married. It was obvious their love had been a mistake and could never survive, she should have never come back to Nigeria, never taken this chance. She was darned fed up and wanted out. It had to be the best for both of them.

Suddenly she sprang up, and started a frantic search on her bed, soon her hand touched her phone and she picked it up, switched it on and waited for it to boot.

'i can't stay here, i can't!' she cried.

Soon the phone was ready and Daisy, with tear glazed eyes, scrolled through her contact. She needed somewhere to go, definitely not to Brenda's or Peter's or her father's. But who else did she know in Nigeria. If only she was in Boston, she cried.

'Uncle Tobechi' she whispered, quite relieved as his number showed up on her phone.

He was her father's elder brother that had given her away in place of her father during their wedding.

'hello uncle' she said, fighting for composure.

'yes, who is this?' came the reply.

'uncle its Daisy...Chinwe' she said wiping her tears.

A pause, then: 'hi! long time, how are you?'

'can i come over? I really need a place to go' she blurted.

'is everything fine? Are you alright?'

'I...I...I...am not' she broke into tears again. Enough of the pretence.

'what happened?'

'i just need a place to stay, i want to clear my head, i really need somewhere to go, i promise not to be in your way, just...'

'its okay, i understand. You can stay as long as you want'

'thank you' Daisy said and wiped her the tears that wouldn't stop.

'Ada is around with her kids, am sure you remember her?'

She didn't remember her, didn't care, what was his problem! 'I don't. Please text the address to me now' she said.

'okay' he said. And the line went dead.

Daisy dropped the phone, stood up to get her duffel bag. She would be far from this house before Jide even returned, that was certain. She might even take off to Boston, if it came to that.

Enough was enough.

And so Daisy packed a stock of cloths that would carry here whenever it could.

That night Jide returned early, with the resolve to apologise for his earlier actions. However, he met an empty house. No note, no word, her phone was switched off and Adamu couldn't give a clear account of when last he'd seen his madam.

with every word Jide spoke, he advanced towards Peter, probably wanting to physical, while Peter who had guessed an incoming assault was also retreating backwards. '...now look here tough boy, this isn't America, this is Nigeria and you don't come to a man's home to cuddle or 'embrace' his wife, if you don't want stitches all over your handsome face!' Jide completed, then furiously brushed aside Daisy that had come inbetween them trying to prevent a fight.

'Its obvious you're very angry now and can't make sense of anything i would say, i should just simply take my leave' Peter said and swerved pass the angry Jide, putting distance between him he addressed Daisy. 'please keep your phone on, i will call to check on you later' after that he hurried towards the door.

'don't you even dare call her because we don't need your faces in our business!' Jide shouted after him.

Daisy was seated down now and crying uncontrollably.

Jide glanced down at her then back at the door. His veins were still constricted in anger, his hands clenched by his sides. He wasn't satisfied with how he'd handled Peter and soon he was rushing out again, ignoring his phone that had started ringing or his wife that was besides herself in tears.

Jide got out just in time to see Peter climbing into his car. Adamu was already at the gate and pulling it apart.

'I've got a final word for you lover boy!' Jide barked soon as he reached Peter. 'I don't ever want to see or even smell you near my wife, in spirit or in body! your consoling 'embrace' isn't needed again! Why? She's married to me, and am the only one with the rights to her body and as you can see, very man enough to embrace her! whatever stint you both had in Boston, is what it is, the past! Am the present and also the future for her! I hear you're a lawyer, well congrats! But don't practice it an inch near my house or with my family! The next time our path meet, i won't be such a gentleman! I'll make sure you understand how we love our women in Nigeria! So you had better get a good life for yourself and enjoy your stay! Don't go looking for homes to wreck! Tell that to Brenda also! Good day Mr. Man, and have a splendid life!' he concluded and jammed the car door without giving Peter the chance to breath a word.

Peter exhaled sharply, kicked start his car and pulled out, not even bothered about replying. A good thing he would be heading to Abuja soon, he thought as he rode out.

'don't ever open my gate to strangers again. slowpoke!' Jide shouted at Adamu after he had locked the gate. Then started for the house.

In the parlour, Daisy was prancing close to the door, waiting for a fight to ensue outside so that she could probably go settle.

Soon the door opened and Jide walked pass her.

'really Daisy, you never cease to amaze me' he said.

'i see no reason why you treated Peter that way' Daisy complained, her eyes blood shot from crying.

Jide stopped, then turned to her. 'and Peter is who?' he asked.

'he's a concerned friend, yet you...'

'why don't you ever pick sensible friends?'

'Peter did nothing, you're just...'

'over reacting? And you where what? Making him comfortable?'

'I don't like your tone and insinuation! Peter embraced me, nothing more'

'don't you even feel ashamed saying that?' he said irritated.

'he's my friend for crying out loud!'

'right! Tell me where a wife has a man as her 'close' friend?'

'he's not any man!'

'that i see. He's not any man, but a man whose touch you prefer to mine!' Jide shoutednow.

'are you accusing me of sleeping with him?'

'not exactly'

'good! Don't you dare compare me with yourself! You're the guilty one! you're the one who has been sleeping with Grace...'

'atleast i didn't bring her home!'

'oh finally! You admit that you've been sleeping with her!'

'yes! I slept with Grace, i fuc.king slept with her! Touched, kissed and caressed her receptive skin! the truth you could kill for is finally out in the open! Hope i made you happy! Now can we move on!'

Daisy stood shocked. Her heart was shattering in thousand pieces, she had known the truth, but hearing him say it so boldly now was painfully peeling the layers of her fresh wound again.

Her breathing increased in painful rhythm as tears rode freely from her eyes.

Noone uttered a word. None moved. Tear stained face stared at an equally angry and hurt face. Tensed cloud hung thick above them. Even the ticking of the clock was sharp as it rode towards 3pm.

And so they stood until the shriek ringing of Jide's phone broke the silence, but he made no move to pick the annoying thing.

'I so hate you now!' Daisy said with all the vehement strength she could utter and dashed for her room.

'yes run! That's what you always do! Keep up with the flight' Jide screamed after her.

He drew out the phone from his pocket and picked the call.

'what!' he screamed at the innocent caller.

It wasn't like Jide had planned to walk in on his wife embracing a man in his living room, he wasn't in liase with Adamu or anything like that. That won't be possible with his firm decision at keeping his employees in arm's length, only socializing with them when it was extremely required.

Something more important had brought him hurrying home this afternoon. In his recent anger and foul mood he had forgotten an important document on his table and urgently needed it for a transaction that day.

Therefore, in his urgent state, he hadn't bothered to drive in, but had packed his car outside and sped pass the surprised Adamu, he'd seen a car parked out in his compound, had been surprised but the need for the document ruled.

He was also still angry at Daisy's coyness and refusal to communicate with him. He didn't understand her anymore, didn't know what she was trying to prove and was developing doubts about staying in a turbulent marriage. And then again, he was still nursing the wound of her rejection.

If Jide had thought he could absorb all the shock therapy that had trailed his life the past months, he'd thought wrong and wasn't prepared for what he was seeing now.

Jide stood transfixed, his hands caught in mid air as he stared at the two forms embracing in his parlour.

Peter was the first to notice him because he was facing the door while Daisy, who was still holding on him, had her back to it.

Slowly, he brought down his hands and steered free from the Daisy's hold, his eyes fixed on Jide who was now walking slowly towards them.

'thanks Pete, i...' Daisy was saying as she wiped her tears. She stopped short and also froze when she realised the presence of Jide.

'hmmm' Jide simply said, looking from one to the other. The dark complexioned man on suit seemed familiar to him. But he was finding it hard piecing his face.

'hello' Peter blurted in an unsure voice.

Daisy wanted to say something but couldn't. She felt her heart picking up pace and tried to calm her nervousness and erase her sense of guilt.

'wel..wel...come home Jide' she stammered now and stepped away from Peter.

Jide said nothing, just crossed his hands across his chest, still staring from one to the other. His previous sense of urgency gone with the wind.

Peter looked at Daisy, as if expecting her to rescue the situation.

'I didn't...know...uhm...expect you back by...' she stammered.

'offcourse not, my presence would get in the way' Jide said rather calmly.

'you're getting the situation wrong. My name is Peter and I...' Peter was saying as he walked towards Jide, probably going for a hand shake.

'now i know!' Jide stressed. Anger and disbelief playing across his face. The man from the picture! How had it skipped his mind?

Just then, he broke into a humourless laugh.

Peter stopped in his track, looking from Daisy to the laughing man. Not sure of what to make of it.

'This can't get any better!' Jide stopped his laugh and shouted. 'So you brought home your ex and didn't just stop there, but went further to cuddle him right in my parlour, in our supposed marital home! And you've been accusing me all this while about Grace!' he directed angrily at the confused Daisy where she stood.

'ex? Cuddle him, i don't...know what you're...talking about' she stutterred.

'you damn know what am talking about! Is this not Peter? your ex! Or are you going to deny that!' he screamed louder.

'Jide could you please calm down and let's sort this out' Peter pleaded.

'stay the hell out of this! And who the hell told you my name? I see, you've been discussing me before the romance session! are you both planning on pulling me down, is that why he came to Nigeria? Fuc.king Answer me Daisy!'

Daisy had already started crying. She had never seen Jide this angry and the accusation he was laying against her was breaking her heart? Because She had done none of it.

'you have got to calm down and let me explain' Peter tried again.

'what you gonna fuc.king explain to me? I came home to find my wife cuddling a man in...'

'we weren't cuddling!' Daisy shouted in a tearful voice.

'then go ahead and explain to me what i saw!' Jide shouted at Daisy.

'now you're taking this too far Mister! i wasn't cuddling your wife, and you have no right to accuse me falsely or use such tone at her! It can be interpreted as abuse and could earn you...' Peter was also losing his temper.

'and what you gonna do? Big guy! Sue me to court? Lock me up! render me bankrupt! is that what you lot have been planning? Twas Brenda and now you!...'

ayd91: the pursuit of perfection has its price (time and efforts), I discovered it was just an illusion (beauty is in the eyes of the beholder), your work is perfect when you believe it so. Anybody can finish a "poem" but not all can make a "poem" a master piece.
writer's block isn't just a myth you know. Anyways, its great knowing their are worthy poets around.
Goodluck in the competition (and don't say you don't need it), if we make it to the finals, I'll be wanting the goodluck backcheesy,,
if it takes 6 months to write a master piece, then we would have just 2 'master piece' poems in a year. Pretty dragging don't you think?

Anyway, wish you luck too......your masterpiece should make it past the first round. I wonder if my one hour poem can put up with such competition.

Don't worry, am gonna cheer you to finals wink

ayd91: I see your point, but be honest what's the longest it has taken you to complete a poem and how different was it from the rest.
Mine was 6 months and it turned out great, my shortest lasted less than 10 mins.
Time may not necessarily affect quality but it sure gives ample upportunity to get inspired, lose inspiration, get it back, cancel and whatnot.
Its pretty different when you are writing free style and when you are restricted to a topic of someone else's choice, I guess more time is needed for proper delivery. #just my thoughts#
6 months for a poem! shocked
even if were a novel!

Anyway like i said, i can pen down a poem within a short time, especially when am really emotional or under a certain inspiration. Writing a poem shouldn't be a struggle, it something that comes from deep within and that's the beauty of it. One can't feel the same way every hour or every month, in the next month or hour, you can pen down the poem differently. So why the waste, erasing and rewriting?

When i write a poem, the only thing i can possibly go back to change are words and maybe to brush up on the rhymes. others remain static.

A poem should flow out from a person in a particular situation at a particular time, and emotion don't remain the same always. That exactly is my point.

(Atleast, am an example of that).

LiteratureRe: Story: Taking Chances by princesa(op):
'i just hope you're fine' Peter said glancing around the parlour. 'Bree also tells me you're an indoor freak'

'always has been a loud mouth, that chick!'

'was she lying then? Have you abandoned your nursing career?' Peter asked.

'I didn't abandon it, just not gotten the time or zeal to push further, it has basically stayed at the thought level but...'

'you didn't see a reputable hospital or what?' he cut in.

'its not that, I've not been...decisive, that's why'

'well i could connect you with...'

'Pete just let it go! I can get my own job, when i want!' Daisy cut in with a slightly raised voice.

Just because he presumably had whatever connections didn't mean she wanted his help or something! She wasn't a leech, neither was she helpless, if she had been serious, then one word to mama would get her a job. They didn't have the right to rub in their rich parental background in her face, she had and could manage just fine.

'am sorry, i didn't mean to offend you, just wanted to help out' Peter apologised.

'yeah, that's also the problem!' Daisy retorted.

'cool off Dee' Peter said raising up his arm in surrender. 'I didn't know it was a sensitive topic, pardon me'

'its okay, am sorry too' Daisy replied calming her already rising anger. Peter had probably meant well, it was just her frayed nerves.

'my manners, what can i get you' she said rising up. 'juice, water...'

'don't tell me you're still strung on juice?' he asked in mock surprise.

Daisy smiled. Could she ever tire of the stuff. 'how many months and you expect the urge gone?' she asked still smiling.

'somethings never change then'

'yeah they don't, so should i get you the juice or...'

'hell no! Wine or water would be better'

'coming right away' Daisy replied and headed for the kitchen, returning minutes later with a wine and a glass cup on a tray.

Setting it down she said: 'so how's the practice? last we saw, you were still an interim...'

'no..Was actually rounding off with that'

'so, why didn't you start your practice in Boston?' Daisy asked as she sat down

'would have loved to, but my parents think otherwise. Would be heading to Abuja to join my dad soon enough'

'really?'

'yeah, Lagos is too wild for me, plus i heard Abuja's where the money at'

'whatever happened to working for passion?' she teased.

'yeah right, i gotta pay my bills darling' Peter drawled and straightened up, ready to dig into the wine.

'and there goes the love for motherland' Daisy mocked and they both laughed.

She clapped also when the wine popped open.

Peter, like Brenda had wealthy parents. He'd Had a degree in psychology from a Nigerian university and had been running his second degree in law at Boston university when he met Daisy and Brenda. Had also been in the same level with Brenda. Was in his late twenties but could pass for a man in his early thirties because of his huge stature and offcourse the fact that he had his parents wealth to 'maintain' himself.

'so how are you generally?' Peter asked as he served himself the wine.

Daisy's countenance changed then. She didn't know if it was right for them to pursue her personal life.

'am fine as you can see' she said evading his worried stare.

'this marriage, is it working?'

'why would you think its not?'

'Brenda tells me that he treats you bad and you've not...'

Daisy shook her head in disbelief, did Brenda ever shut the fuc.k up! 'am gonna really shut her up someday! Did you guys discuss me last Sunday or...'

'no! Twas in Boston after your sudden marriage and...well, my apologies for missing it, I couldn't bring myself to face the...'

'it don't matter now, the wedding took place like ages ago, so...'

'the question now is how you're holding up? Are you truly happy? I mean i hope he isn't abusive or something?'

Daisy shrugged, still avoiding his gaze. 'he's not abusive, but...'

'you know, you don't need to suffer in silence, am a practicing lawyer and if you need my expertise...'

Daisy scoffed. Suffering in silence? Did that describe her situation? Funny indeed! 'I don't want a divorce if that's what you're insinuating, i just want...want to be happy' she said, stood up and crossed her arm.

'You're not happy here?'

'its not exactly as you think. Its just that these past days, i find that i miss my life in Boston and i regret ever coming to Nigeria' Daisy said in an emotion laden voice.

'oh Daisy' Peter whispered, stood up and walked towards her, then drew her in for a hug, Daisy leaned closer to him ready to let loose her tears. Maybe Peter was the friend that truly understood how she felt. Had always provided a crying shoulder, she could as well tap into his masculine strength if only for this once, she thought and wrapped her hands around him.

Just then, the door of the parlour screeched open and in walked Jide.

'Madam am through' Okon said.

He was standing a few steps away from the dining and rubbing his wet hands together which he had just washed in the kitchen after the job of the day.

Daisy rolled over on the settee where she had lay for the past hours and looked at him.

'so home it is then?' she asked.

'yes' okon replied and started walking towards the door.

'you saw the food i left?' she called after him.

'yes, thank you ma' Okon replied, opened the door and stepped out.

Daisy felt so lonely all of a second as she heard the door jam close.

The past five days had felt like hell, her conscience had constantly nagged her while her emotions threatened to engulf her. The parlour had suddenly become her new hideout as she waited in vain to catch even a glimpse of Jide. Because Jide left earlier than usual and came home very late.

She knew that her actions and attitude had pushed him to the wall and caused a return to their previous state of cohabitation. He had suddenly started keeping late nights again, refused to eat her food and hardly said a word to her when their path miraculously met.

Had her attitude finally pushed him into the hands of another woman? To Grace presumably? Was he thinking about resolving their marriage for good this time? Why wasn't he keen on continuing his bids at winning her back and getting her to talk about resolving their marriage issues?

She was ready to talk, wanted him to return his attention to her, wanted them to go into the silliest of arguments or just sit together in silence, she wanted him to kiss her again, she swear not to push him away like she had, she would hold on to him like her life depended on it, she would gladly receive all of him, she would do so much more, only if...

Daisy sighed and wiped away a tear that had rolled down her eyes.

'I've lost him' she moaned. You never know what you have until you lose it, she thought.

Five days after the kiss that had ignited her love for her husband and he was drifting away. He wasn't atall missing, neither was it the fact that he home late. No, it was simply the fact that that scowl that had characterise his face during the early days of their marriage had returned and was killing her.

More painful, when she realise that she had put it there.

When had she lost her track, to become this vindictive, revenge seeking lady? where was the girl who never allowed herself stay emotionally down no matter the storm life threw at her? hadn't she weathered the earlier trauma of their marriage pretty well? won the love of her man? But now that she should reap the fruits of her labour, welcome him with wide open arms, she was pushing him away, listening to gossips, hearsay and insinuations from everyone!

It was obvious who became the loser at the end.

'Enough with the anger and resentment Daisy!' she said wiping her tear stained face. 'Its time to get your man back'

With a new resolve, she stood up and headed for the kitchen, for she suddenly felt hungry. All that trauma of the past days had made her not too encouraging appetite diminish completely.

Now that she was determined to sort things out with Jide nomatter when he returned, she needed all the strength she could get.

'apologies for the way he treated you, I've never seen him act like this before' Daisy said as she led Peter towards the settee

'let it slide, its Nigeria afterall and one needs to be security conscious' he replied, following behind her.

Daisy had been awakened from the settee where she had dozed off after eating by the insistent knock on the parlour door. She had hurried over to find an angry looking Adamu, who immediately relayed to her the presence of an unfamiliar man asking for her at the gate. Then Daisy, wondering when this new protocol to visitors started, had gone out to meet Peter, relaxing patiently against his car. She had asked the stone faced Adamu to let him in.

'madam, oga no go like this kain thing' he had grumbled before opening wide the gate.

Whatever had been his thoughts or reason for acting so, Daisy hadn't bothered, not after her recent resolve to stop taking people's opinion seriously.

'welcome to my humble abode' Daisy said smiling as she pointed at a seat.

'thank you, not bad atall' Peter said seating down.

Daisy shrugged in reply and sat on the seat beside his.

'what happened to your phone i've...'

'so sorry, i switched it off'

'is everything fine? You look kinda pale to me?'

'oh Peter, stop fretting, am good!'

'Its just that you got us all worried, you know Brenda is presently angry with you'

Daisy shrugged. She wasn't bothered. Brenda wasn't unconnected to her problems, she needed some time alone. They were friends quite alright, but she presently didn't need her inputs in her affair, no she wasn't keeping grudges, she was just building limits.

'and like i said, i wanted some time off'
