ABSTRACT In Nigeria, the establishment of minimum wage laws has traditionally been viewed as a critical component of labour policies aimed at alleviating poverty and improving living standards for workers. However, the issue of minimum wage has been a contentious topic in Nigeria, particularly against the backdrop of escalating inflation, tax reforms, and economic policies that have disproportionately burdened the working class. This paper critically examines the evolution of Nigeria’s minimum wage policies, highlighting the inadequacies of the recently proposed minimum wage of ₦70,000 in 2023. It explores the economic realities of workers subjected to fuel price hikes, inflation, and high taxation, which have perpetuated conditions akin to modern-day slavery. The paper proposes a shift from a mere focus on minimum wages to policies that foster sustainable livelihoods for Nigerian workers. Furthermore, the minimum wage alone has proven insufficient to secure sustainable livelihoods amidst a backdrop of economic instability, rising inflation, and a burgeoning informal sector. This paper explores the shortcomings of current minimum wage policies and presents a framework for transitioning towards sustainable livelihoods, encompassing broader labour rights, social protection schemes, and economic diversification strategies. Keywords: Minimum Wage, Sustainable Livelihoods, Labour Policy, Economic Diversification, Social Protection |
