The goal here is to win more local support among Palestines since those prisoners were being held over weird offences like standing up to Israeli soldiers.

Saying Hamas is using them as shields is a Western/Israeli talkpoint intended to justify the label of Hamas being a terror group.

Taking civilian hostages is to stop carpet bombing.
If they need prisoner exchange, they would have sticked to just taking Israeli soldiers as hostage.

They are doing both now, soldiers for swapping and civilians as shields against carpet bombing.

There was a case of an 8-year-old girl who was sentenced to prison a few years ago for repeatedly standing up to Israeli soldiers.

They need them not only for swapping but also to deter IDF from carrying out their normal carpet bombing which they still ended up doing.

They have been fighting for 70yrs, so they know how far.

Ukrainians are Russians, and until this war started, most people in Europe didn't see nor make any distinction between them.
Historically both Ukrainians and Russians mostly have their origins in Kiev (capital of Ukraine). Also both Ukrainian language and Russian language are derived from a language which we now refer to as "old Russian".
Their cultures are extremely similar as well.
The only importance Ukraine has to the west is that it can be used against Russia. If Ukraine were far away from Russia, nobody would even care or know about Ukraine.
