D’ Tigers captain to the AfroBasket 2015 Olumide Oyedeji came out during the week with a sad conclusion on his fellow athletes who he describes as lacking in the area of education.
Oyedeji, while speaking Freethrow in a recent interview noted that the biggest challenge facing most Nigerian athletes rests with poor educational backgrounds

The former NBA player while answering questions on his collegiate basketball initiative stated that one of the major reasons behind the project is to help keep Nigerian athletes in school.


“The Olumide Oyedeji Intercollegiate Basketball Championship is geared towards helping the Nigerian athlete to focus on education. I have noticed that about 75% of Nigerian athletes have poor educational backgrounds and it affects them negatively in the way they react to issues.

“Having benefitted from education through basketball, I want to use the intercollegiate basketball championship to attract our athletes back to school. The Nigerian top league is so short that our players don’t have enough games to play but with this now, they have additional games to play to make them better. On the other hand, the players will get an education along the line.

“As a player, injury can end your career just when you think you’re at the peak of your career and that will be the end but with an education, you can get into other spheres of life and continue with another career. Education is one thing that can’t be taken away from you once you’re educated,” he stated.
While not ruling himself out of another season playing the game, Oyedeji says the AfroBasket 2017 in Congo won’t be a bad idea as, Oyedeji looks set to be a part of the squad that would defend the title.
In this interview with fiba.com, Oyedeji speaks of the possibilities of playing on for another season, the situation which surrounded his withdrawal from the Rio 2016 camp, his dream for a sustained collegiate basketball league for Nigeria and the contentious issue of an all foreign based players in D’ Tigers to major championship.
Oyedeji played at the 1999 and 2000 Nike Hoop Summits. He was selected by the Seattle SuperSonics, in the 2nd round (42nd overall) of the 2000 NBA Draft. He played a total of 93 games during 3 seasons in the NBA, and had career averages of 1.4 points per game, 2.1 rebounds per game, 0.1 assists per game, and 0.2 steals per game.
He also played in the Spanish League with Granada. Oyedeji is currently signed on with the London Lions, a team based in London and competes in the British Basketball League – the top level men’s basketball league in the United Kingdom.
He had played with Shanxi Zhongyu in the Chinese Basketball Association. He played with Changwon LG Sakers of the Korean Basketball League in 2011. However, he was released from the team, despite averaging 10.8 points, 15.0 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks per game.
He contributed immensely to his national team’s participation at the FIBA Africa Nations Cup in 1997, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2011, 2013 and 2015. He won silver medals in 1997, 1999 and 2003 respectively during the FIBA Africa Nations Cup. He won the bronze medal at the 2005 FIBA Africa Championship and 2011 FIBA Africa Championship and has represented Nigeria in the All Africa Games winning bronze in 1999, 2007 and 2015, whilst silver in 2003 and Gold in 2011. He played at the FIBA World Cup in 1999.

The University of Ife, alumni is the only African Player to ever feature in all major basketball tournaments on the global stage, Olympics Games, World Cup, Commonwealth Games, All Africa Games, NBA, Euro-League, Asia Championships and South America Basketball league as well as being the first African player ever to be drafted outside America to the NBA.

He featured in the invitational tournament in South Africa where he captained the team and lead them to victory in the finals. Nigeria’s basketball team, D’Tigers, emerged overall winners of the 2015 Four Nations’ invitational basketball tournament hosted by South Africa on Sunday March 22, 2015. Oyedeji, the longest serving captain of the Nigerian Men’s national team emerged the MVP of that tournament.

The International Basketball Federation, FIBA, Central Board appointed the him to the FIBA Player’s commission for the 2014-2019 term of office last year. Oyedeji’s appointment resulted from his nomination by the Nigerian Basketball Federation in line with the criteria provided by the world governing body of basketball on his achievement on the court as well as his tireless work ethic in developing the game not only in his home country but beyond its borders in Africa and across the globe. He is expected to serve in the newly inaugurated FIBA Player’s commission under the chairmanship of former Serbian International and NBA great, Vlade Divac.

Parents and teachers who spoke through the National Parent-Teacher Association of Nigeria, the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools among others, said an urgent meeting was necessary to stem the tide of an evil wind blowing in schools across the country to prevent it from becoming epidemic.
NTIC’s spokesperson, Cemal Yigit, had said in a statement last Saturday that at about 9.30pm, some armed men gained entrance to the girls’ section of the school through different means and held hostage three female supervisors, a female cook, a female teacher (Turkish) and three students.
On Monday, the abductors had demanded a N1.2bn ransom for the release of the abductees and later reduced it to N750m.

Representatives of school owners and parents, who spoke to Saturday PUNCH, expressed anger and concern about the development, noting that they were seeking an audience with the President, especially as the abducted victims have yet to regain freedom.
The Parent-Teacher Association of Nigeria, the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools and the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools, said the situation was worrisome and required urgent attention.

Earlier in March, 2016, three pupils of Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary, Ikorodu, Lagos, were abducted by gunmen. On October 6, 2016, four pupils and two teachers were also abducted at the Lagos State Model College, Igbonla, Epe.
In both cases, the victims did not secure their freedom until after five days.
The Deputy National President of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, Chief Yomi Otubela, said the association would like to meet the President on the issue, given the risk being faced by pupils in many schools.

The Lagos State Government, LASG has harped on the need to make Yoruba Language a compulsory teaching subject in all schools in the state.
The state Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, represented by his deputy Dr. Idiat Oluranti Adebule, made this known on Thursday at a stakeholders’ forum organised by the state House of Assembly at Academy hall, Agidingbi, Ikeja.

He said the state had concluded plans and that the subject will be taught in primary schools and junior secondary school, JSS 3 across the state.
The Governor, who expressed reservations that government’s previous efforts at making the teaching of the language compulsory in all schools in the state were being frustrated by proprietors of private schools, noted that it was important for children not only to learn the language of their environment, but also the culture and the people’s general way of life.

“It is very important for every Yoruba child to be able to speak the language very fluently, enriched with adequate cultural norms of the people so as to guarantee a responsible life in the future.
“the state government equally noted that the imposition of western culture and language on Nigerian children has done a lot of damage to the rich local cultural heritage of the Yoruba people,” he said.
Ambode expressed optimism that the State House of Assembly will do the needful to make the dream come to reality even as he commended the members for their efforts at ensuring that Yoruba language is not relegated to the background.

Apart from that, an assault on any public servant lawfully carrying out his or her duty is a big slap on the authorities. The entire Government apparatus and machinery, especially the Governor has just been ridiculed and a big slap given to LASTMA as an institution with the murder of Innocent and humble Surajudeen who was stoned to death (broad day light 15th of December). He equalled the rank of the District Police Officer (DPO) in the LASTMA hierarchy. One of the brightest officials, he was an epitome of humility and commitment. He was always ready to serve with zealous passion.

Ironically, he had saved many offenders through his diplomatic clout. This was the gem we lost to jungle justice. It behooves the government to rise to this challenge and show the perpetrators that they are not bigger than the State. The recorded video showed the face of the perpetrators (Okada riders and tanker drivers) along Liverpool axis at Apapa.

As a result of the recent kidnapping of three female pupils and five staff members, including a Turkish national, by unknown gunmen in the Nigerian Tulip International Colleges (formerly known as Turkish International School), last Friday, parents and school owners are seeking emergency meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari over the increasing state of insecurity in the nation’s schools.

Parents and teachers who spoke through the National Parent-Teacher Association of Nigeria, the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools among others, said an urgent meeting was necessary to stem the tide of an evil wind blowing in schools across the country to prevent it from becoming epidemic.
NTIC’s spokesperson, Cemal Yigit, had said in a statement last Saturday that at about 9.30pm, some armed men gained entrance to the girls’ section of the school through different means and held hostage three female supervisors, a female cook, a female teacher (Turkish) and three students.
On Monday, the abductors had demanded a N1.2bn ransom for the release of the abductees and later reduced it to N750m.

Representatives of school owners and parents, who spoke to Saturday PUNCH, expressed anger and concern about the development, noting that they were seeking an audience with the President, especially as the abducted victims have yet to regain freedom.
The Parent-Teacher Association of Nigeria, the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools and the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools, said the situation was worrisome and required urgent attention.

Earlier in March, 2016, three pupils of Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary, Ikorodu, Lagos, were abducted by gunmen. On October 6, 2016, four pupils and two teachers were also abducted at the Lagos State Model College, Igbonla, Epe.
In both cases, the victims did not secure their freedom until after five days.
The Deputy National President of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, Chief Yomi Otubela, said the association would like to meet the President on the issue, given the risk being faced by pupils in many schools.


He said even though education is under the concurrent list in the constitution and governors are responsible for how education is run in their states, in accordance with the National Policy on Education, issues that are sensitive as the safety of lives of students and schoolchildren demand urgent national intervention.
“We want to meet with the President because this is about the future of the leaders of tomorrow,” he said.
Otubela explained that one of the issues they would like to discuss with the President is the need for the government to provide armed security men around all schools in the country.

He said, “Last year, we held a press briefing where we asked government to see how they could provide armed security in all the streets that have schools, both private and public schools.
“This has yet to be done and it is one of the issues that would be on our agenda.”
However, he said given that the government had “failed to secure the citizens,” respective PTAs and school managements had been advised to raise funds and provide security for themselves.
“If some parents can pay as much as N1m as tuition per year, they should be able to look for 10 to 20 per cent of that amount to secure that child. That is the truth,” he said.

Similarly, NAPTAN National President, Mallam Danjuma, said his organisation had resolved to write a letter to the President, requesting an audience with him over the fate of schoolchildren in the country.
Danjuma said paramount on the agenda of issues they would like to discuss with the President is insecurity in primary and secondary schools.

Already, he said NAPTAN had fixed a meeting with the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, in February.
Danjuma said, “We are very worried about insecurity in our schools. Recently, we lost four of our students in Maiduguri and some teachers. It’s sad.
“It’s like kidnappers and Boko Haram are focusing their attention on our schools.
“Our stand is clear. When our students and teachers were kidnapped in a school in Lagos, I clearly called on the federal and state governments and proprietors of private schools and faith-based schools to stand firm and make necessary provision for tight security, to protect the lives of our children and teachers.

“Some of what we have in some schools are old men who cannot even pursue small children. The PTAs don’t have much to engage the services of security men. But we are managing with the little that we have. And that is one of the issues we are discussing with the minister in February.”
Also, the President, All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools, Lagos State Chapter, Mrs. Omotunde Lawson, said that school principals were concerned about the increasing state of insecurity in schools, especially secondary schools.
She said, “ANCOPPS will appreciate it if the President can grant us audience. This is an emergency. We are very concerned about the spate of kidnapping in our schools.”
Also, the National President of the ANCOPPS, Mr. Anselm Izuagie, said, “The school system belongs to all of us. We are all in the system and it appears no one is free from all these hazards of the society. So, we are ready to join the other bodies to meet the President on the matter.”
Meanwhile, highbrow secondary schools in Lagos and Ogun states have started putting security measures in place to improve on the safety of their students and teachers, investigation by Saturday PUNCH has revealed.

Educators also learn how to maintain classroom discipline through experience and adapt their basic techniques to the best practices for their current students who might differ substantially from the previous groups. Discipline Defined

It is not easy to define the word discipline because of the fact that the word can be used in a variety of ways. For instance, Arum (2003) Glasser (2001) see discipline as conforming in totality to laid down norms and as complete obedience to orders. Bello (1981), martella, Neslon and Marchand view discipline as a means of imparting knowledge and skills. Latham (1997) and Saich (2003) see discipline as simply punishment and control. Classroom discipline is more than all of the above. It is more than the power the teacher exercises over his students. It is more than the mere maintenance of law and order in the classroom or the right method of dealing with offenders in schools. It means more than punishment and occasional praises and rewards. It is more than mere stillness and quietness in the classroom.

Discipline according to this writer, is the application of all those influences which secure or at least try to secure proper conduct in schools. Classroom discipline is the training which produces in students self restraint, orderliness, good conduct, cooperation and the habit of getting the best out of themselves. It involves intellectual and moral education as opposed to mere order and instruction. Discipline is more than simply getting students to behave the way one expects them to or stopping them from behaving the way one does not want on a specific occasion. Discipline according to this writer is the continuous process of positive instruction and negative correction through which students are taught to act within specified rules and values. Simply stated mathematically:

Discipline = Instruction + Correction. i.e Discipline = 90% Instruction + 10% Correction.

A child’s behavior usually gets worse, not better if this ratio is reversed. Excessive negative responses from parents or teachers tend to encourage more negative responses from the hurt and angry child. To discipline effectively, negative correction should be used sparingly and positive instruction should be used most of the time.

The main purpose of school is to provide students with an educational foundation from which they can build successful independent lives. However, disruptions in the classroom cause roadblocks to students’ achievement. Maintaining discipline in schools is essential for effective curriculum delivery. The following are some best practices that can help teachers to achieve this.

1. Increase Parental Involvement

Parents truly make a difference in student achievement and behaviour. Schools should institute a policy where teachers are required to contact parents periodically through the year. Half-term or end-of-term reports are often not enough. A parent cannot help solve an issue if they do not know one exists. While home calls take time, in the end they can help provide solutions to very difficult classroom problem. This is not to say that all parent involvement will be positive or have a measurable effect on student’s behaviour. Nevertheless, this is an area which many successful schools claim make a huge difference.

2. Create and Enforce a School wide Discipline Plan

Discipline plans are a way to provide students with a consistent and fair plan of what will happen if they misbehave. While some schools have a discipline plan on books, many do not have disciplinary plans on conduct/behaviour. Having it posted in every classroom and in notice boards around the school compound is a good way to start.

3. Practice Effective Follow Through

While posting the discipline plan is important so that all students are informed of the consequences for misbehaviour, followings through on the discipline plan is the key to truly fostering discipline in schools. In the classroom, if a teacher does not follow through and deal with misbehaviour, it will increase. School-wide, if administrators do not follow the discipline plan and support the teachers, it would easily lose control of the situation.

A family of four children has been offered scholarship by the Yomi Otubela Foundation (Y.O.F). Mr Adejare Olaitan, father of the four recipients, said he felt honoured that his children were among the recipients of the YOF scholarship award despite the present economic recession in the country.

He said further that such act of philanthropy would help raise the standard of education as it would enable the students to concentrate on their studies knowing fully well that it is all expense paid, and as such, they would be serious with their studies.

Meanwhile, Mrs Adejare (mother), could not hide her joy as she felt blessed and honoured. She advised other philanthropists to emulate the founder of YOF, Chief 'Yomi Otubela, as it would help the society make rapid and sustainable progress.

The founder of the foundation, Chief Otubela, said that the YOF was out to help the less-privileged but brilliant students and would continue to do its utmost to see that the hand of fellowship was continuously extended to those qualified for the scholarship without any reservation.
