The Africa Archive When George Stinney Jr. was executed for the killings of two white girls in 1944, he was so small that the straps of South Carolina’s electric chair didn’t fit him properly, and he had to sit on a bookfor his electrocution. Stinney was just 14 years old at the time and became the youngest person put to death in the United States in the 20th century. But Wednesday, 70 years after the fact, Circuit Judge Carmen Mullen tossed out his conviction, which was reached after a trial that didn’t even last a full day and was never appealed. As the Associated Press noted, it took Mullen “nearly four times as long to issue her ruling as it took in 1944 to go from arrest to execution.” “I can think of no greater injustice,” Mullen wrote in her 29-page order, the AP reported. Stinney, who was black, was arrested for the beating deaths of two young girls in the segregated town of Alcolu. There wasn’t any physical evidence linking him the crimes, and he wasn’t allowed to see his parents after he was apprehended. “Given the particularized circumstances of Stinney’s case, I find by a preponderance of the evidence standard, that a violation of the Defendant’s procedural due process rights tainted his prosecution,” Mullen wrote in her decision, according to CNN. From the AP: Stinney’s case has long been whispered in civil rights circles in South Carolina as an example of how a black person could be railroaded by a justice system during the Jim Crow era where the investigators, prosecutors and juries were all white. The case received renewed attention because of a crusade by textile inspector and school board member George Frierson. Armed with a binder full of newspaper articles and other evidence, he and a law firm believed the teen represented everything that was wrong with South Carolina during the era of segregation. “It was obviously a long shot but one we thought was worth taking,” said attorney Matt Burgess, whose firm argued that Stinney should get a new trial. Earlier this year, Stinney’s sister, Amie Ruffner told the Guardian: “I never went back [to Alcolu]. I curse that place. It was the destruction of my family and the killing of my brother.” # rip

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Edo State of recruiting All Progressives Congress (APC) loyalist as ad- hoc staff ahead of the forthcoming 2016 Edo State gubernatorial election. The Party raised the alarm on Saturday in a press statement by its Chief Spokesman, Prince Dayo Adeyeye saying that there is a video evidence exposing INEC officials in Edo State of compromising the outcome of the gubernatorial election before the scheduled Saturday November10, 2016 poll. “We have once again uncovered another plot by the Electoral umpire in Edo State to rig the gubernatorial election in favour of the government in power in the state. There are clear evidence available to us showing how INEC officials are recruiting APC members as ad- hoc staff to rig the election for the APC candidate in the governorship election in the state,” Prince Adeyeye said. The PDP Spokesman warned that the party will not tolerate any act of sabotage and advised the electoral umpire to recruit neutral and credible Nigerians without partisan interest as ad- hoc staff to maintain their neutrality in the process. https://newtelegraphonline.com/edo-guber-poll-inec-recruiting-apc-members-ad-hoc-staff-pdp/

Indications emerged Friday that the Federal Government has concluded plan to swap the Chibok girls with some Boko Haram members detained at various prisons across the country. It was gathered that as part of the moves, security agencies had started conducting a fresh profiling of the Boko Haram detainees in line with a directive of the Federal Government. Punch quoted insiders as saying that profiling would include the time they were arrested and the de-radicalisation programme they had undergone. According to the report, police, the Nigeria Prison Service, the office of the National Security Adviser and the Ministry of Justice would be involved in the process. The source said the insurgents, who had not been tried could be the first beneficiaries of the deal. The source added that the government had started addressing the problem. He said, “I can assure you that the government is identifying genuine members of the sect it is negotiating with. We won’t repeat the mistake the immediate past government made by talking with those who will not produce the girls. “Government is not opposed to swopping. Other countries, including Israel, have done it. In fact, security agencies are conducting fresh profiling of the sect members that are being detained. That is the first move. If there are sect members that have not been tried, they will be the first set to be considered under the arrangement.” http://dailypost.ng/2016/08/20/fg-set-swap-boko-haram-detainees-chibok-girls/

A former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has said that he and four other eminent Nigerians brought President Muhammadu Buhari to power just to salvage the country from its current woes. He said they took the decision when they felt that the country was on the edge of collapsing. Obasanjo said, “Three or four of us from different part of the country got together and said to ourselves what do we do? “We said what is the problem with us and why are we still not growing. We got talking and knew we needed to do something. “What do we need to deal with for this Nigeria of ours to become what God has created it to be. A land flowing with milk and honey, that is the intention of God for creating Nigeria.” The former President, who was quoted as making this statement on Thursday at a reception held in his honour at the Government House, Yola, Taraba State, said so far, Buhari had not disappointed the country. He said, “So far, Buhari has not disappointed us. I trust him, he will not fail Nigerians. I know he will overcome the challenges the country is currently facing.” He, however, said Nigeria needed to get its acts right in the area of politics, governance and leadership for the country to develop. The Cable reports that Obasanjo vowed never to return to the Peoples Democratic Party on which platform he served as president for eight years. Obasanjo said, “In the part of the country where I come from, there is a saying that you cannot say ‘good night’ and come back to say ‘good evening’ in the same place. “So for me, it is good night for the PDP and that is all.” http://dailypost.ng/2016/08/20/brought-buhari-save-nigeria-obasanjo/

TonyeBarcanista:if indeed d leaders frm that region are leaders for their people i bet they wil use judiciously all monies goten frm d centre for d betterment of it pple and i bet u all this agitations for resource control wont come in.d poor on d street of niger delta feel short changed hence their frustration. the greed from the leaders of your region is responsible for d problems Nigeria is facing frm d pple of Niger delta.that said...i jus got this nice writeup on facebook, you can see the diff btw the mentality of d peeps from d north and ur peeps frm d delta. READ: Hon. Abubakar Yunusa Ahmad (Ustaz) Wrote. OIL IN THE NORTH AND RESOURCE CONTROL An average northerner is never a greedy person even if he is damn corrupt. And I don't think there is anybody that has cheerfully distributed a looted funds across the country like Dasuki a northerner. I don't know why many southerner hates to hear about crude oil exploration in the north. WHY? The funny thing is the same north commenced the exploration in the Niger-Delta many years back and developed it to what it is today without an acts of jealousy of not be found in the north. The recent oil exploration in Lagos was stopped by previous government of PDP, but another northerner PMB came and the exploration became real. The facts that the crude oil price has fall globally has not make the product a bad commodity because countries like China, Indians and many high oil consuming nations in Europe has not relent in their efforts to discover their own crude because of the huge resources they spend in importing these oil products. Back in Nigeria, are we meeting our 2.2m quota with the militancy in Niger-Delta? The answer is NO. Do we need more crude oil to earns FOREX with the situation of our economy currently? The answer is YES. Then why exploring oil in the north become the problem of some from South? Why? Federal Government must take the lead in the oil exploration in that insurgency ravage region to creates confidence to private investors that the place is good for all business. No private investor will go to North-East if government is not there doing it for public conviction that the insurgency is over. Northerners are being called PARASITES because of absence of crude whereas just 'Tomatoes Disease' In the north few months back increased the cost of a basket from N1000 to N25, 000. Tell me assuming north want to control the supply of tomatoes to the south, how much do you think the cost will be? Four States of Benue, Nassarawa, Taraba and Niger from the Parasite-North produces 70% of the total yam output in Nigeria. The north feeds the nation and never talk of resource control, or agricultural produce are not resources but only oil? Kainji and Shiroro few years back were the two major power plants generating electricity in Nigeria, north never asked for 13% derivation or called for the cancellation of 'National Grid' how much more of controlling it. Crude oil is not only present in Lake-Chad but also in Bida and Sokoto basin, an extension of southern Niger-Republic basin with vast crude oil deposit that is massively been explored presently. No matter how much we are been faced with hunger in Nigeria brought about by the fall in global oil price, corruption and mismanagement, nobody would ever drink oil even if it is free.. North will never ask for resource control. But will be glad not to be seen any longer as parasites because of oil and a region of low financial contribution to the centre. |
