There is an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the World Health Organization announced Friday.
The epidemic, which is currently small, is in Bas-Uele province, near the northern border with the Central African Republic. To date there have been nine suspected cases, three of whom have died. The first case dates back to April 22.
Dr. Oly Ilunga Kalenga, the minister of public health, informed the WHO of the outbreak. Testing of samples from five of the sick was conducted at the country’s National Biomedical Research Institute.
The outbreak is caused by the Zaire species of the virus — the same strain that was responsible for the massive West African outbreak in 2014-15. In some respects, that is good news. A
vaccine to protect against the Zaire virus was tested and found to be effective in the West African outbreak and supplies of it have been stockpiled.
The first teams of epidemiologists, social mobilization, and risk communication experts as well as specialists in hygiene and sanitation are expected to reach the outbreak setting by Saturday, the WHO statement said.
The Democratic Republic of Congo has experience containing Ebola outbreaks. The first known outbreak of the deadly disease occurred there in 1976, in Yamuku. A total of 318 cases were recorded in that outbreak, including 280 deaths.
The country has fought seven outbreaks before the current one; the most recent was between August and November of 2014, and involved 66 cases.
In the early days of the world’s experience with Ebola, outbreaks in DRC numbered in the hundreds of cases — which was large at the time. But the three outbreaks in DRC in the past decade involved fewer than 100 cases each.
The largest known outbreak of Ebola was the 2014-2015 West African epidemic. More than 28,600 people were infected and more than 11,300 died.

Ok I was in court last week and I witnessed a murder case. As the defendant narrated, She has been in an abusive relationship for 4 Years with the deceased. They lived together untill a certain time in 2016 when she told him its over as she was tired of the way he treated her. He then met her while she was packing her things with cutlass and screw diver that he would kill her, as he was beating and kicking her he was saying "you will not be alive to marry another man " . She then grabbed a knife from the table to scare him away and mistakenly stabbed him on the chest.
My question is, do u think she can successfully plead the defence of "self defence " and be acquitted? If u were her counsel, how would u go about it?
I have seen an abusing boyfriend I had to fight him myself.
if u see an abusive boyfriend u will ask her why one stab

An incestuous father, Folorunsho Oluwaseun, who allegedly turned his 17-year-old daughter into a sex object, was on Friday granted a reprieve by an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

Oluwaseun was released on N300,000 bail with two sureties in like sum after he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The 51-year-old electrician, who resides at 40, Popoola St., Offin in Ikorodu, Lagos State, is facing a charge of rape.

Police Prosecutor Clifford Ogu told the court that the accused committed the offence between Aug. 8, 2016, and April 2017 at his residence.

Ogu said the accused, who has separated from his wife since 2013, was awarded the custody of his three children including the girl.

“The accused started abusing his 17-year-old daughter sexually since August last year.

Barely two days after men of the Nigerian Army engaged a militant group in a shootout at a creek in Ajakpa community, in the Ese Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State, the soldiers sent to the area to keep the peace have allegedly attacked members of the community.

The military men allegedly attacked the community on Wednesday and allegedly burnt a large number of houses, while unspecified number of residents were reportedly killed.

The soldiers, operating under Operation Safe Delta, had on Monday attacked the militants, killing the leader of the gang identified as Ossy Ibori, and 15 members of the group. Three soldiers reportedly lost their lives in the battle.

It was gathered that some soldiers were later deployed in the community to ensure that normalcy returned, as well as find the fleeing members of the militant group.

But the narrative changed on Wednesday when the military men allegedly shot at residents and burnt houses.

One of the leaders of Ajakpa community, Mr. Tonye Ebitibituwa, told our correspondent that only churches were spared by the soldiers.

He said, “This morning (Wednesday), the military men came to the community with six gun boats and attacked our community. They set the town ablaze. Ajakpa community did not support the killing of the soldiers by Ibori’s gang.

“The community did not in any way support Ibori, but the ongoing action of the military has no human face. Setting the community on fire is unnecessary.”

Ebitibituwa disclosed that over 20,000 residents of the community had been rendered homeless while many houses were affected in the community.

He urged the Ondo State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, to set up a rehabilitation committee to save the lives of people of the community.

“The inhabitants of Ajakpa community have been rendered homeless without food, water and basic things of life. We appeal to the Ondo State Government to assist the innocent people,” the community leader said.

However, the Public Relations Officer of the 32 Artillery Brigade, Captain Ojo Adelegan, denied that soldiers attacked the community.

He said those that were deployed in the community could not have involved themselves in any unprofessional conduct on the field.

He said, “The Nigerian Army did not burn houses or kill innocent people in that community. The protection of lives and property of Ajakpa community is our responsibility.

“The operation we went for was to flush out the militants so that peace would return to the community.

“If there is burning of houses anywhere, it should not be attributed to the army. Our men can never be involved in such an act.”

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has reduced its importation of Premium Motor Spirit , popularly known as petrol , from about 95 per cent to 50 per cent, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr . Ibe Kachikwu , has said .
According to Kachikwu , the reduction has paved the way for massive investments in the downstream oil sector , as marketers have resumed importation of PMS following the petrol price modulation mechanism introduced by the government in May last year .
The minister , who disclosed this in a podcast message posted on his Facebook page on Saturday, also explained how his ministry was able to end the fuel subsidy regime , ensure petroleum product availability , as well as improve governance efficiency in the oil and gas sector .
Kachikwu said , “ First we ’ ve moved from a fully subsidy based sector to a partially liberalised sector . I say partially because we haven ’ t quite achieved the template to have a fully liberalised sector . What that has done for us is that it has reduced consumption from 50 million litres to 37 million litres a day .
“ Some of that figures are fraud - based , others are potential diversion numbers , but what is happening now is that the effect of our response curbed the appetite for consumption and left us with a much more robust reserve .
“ In addition , the pricing governance , which was a modulating concept , enabled us to come closer to what the realities of pricing were and so this enabled marketers to jump back into the business and continue to massively import.
He added , “ So what you find over a period of between when we introduced this measure (in May 2016 ) till towards the end of last year , was that the NNPC reduced its importation profile from supplying about 90 to 95 per cent of the market to about 50 per cent, which was massive , providing jobs, activity , investment and stability . ”
Prior to Kachikwu ’ s statement , the NNPC had often said it was the major supplier of petroleum products , particularly PMS , supplying over 90 per cent of what is consumed across the country.
The minister further noted that the government had eliminated subsidy payments to oil marketers substantially , but stressed that the downstream oil sector had continued to encounter challenges .
Kachikwu said , “There isn’ t fuel scarcity , we are not short of products , but yet the downstream and midstream sectors continue to remain challenged . And what we are going to do is to analyse what we have done so far and begin to throw solutions to some of these challenges .
“ When we first moved in , we had refineries that were not producing, fuel subsidy issues of almost N15 bn monthly expenses, massive diversion of petroleum products across borders . We are consuming about 50 million litres of products at the time , but that substantially has reduced now .
“ We had issues of pricing efficiency and governance , for at that time the prices we were selling at were so ridiculously below what the sustainable prices are . And you find a situation where basically marketers disappeared from the industry . So we had massive shortages , queues and everything seemed to be breaking down . We ’ ve since come out from that . ”
The minister said Nigeria should start moving away from the use of products like petrol , kerosene and diesel to using liquefied petroleum gas .
He said , “ The reality is that all over the world everybody is moving to cleaner fossils . LPG provides that for us , gas does the same for us . So we need to begin to look at how we can install pipelines for LPG and take it to places of its consumption , where we can have vehicles that have the capability to potentially use gas in order to reduce PMS usage . ”
To achieve this , Kachikwu said the government would collaborate with stakeholders in the sector in order to effectively meet its long- term target in the sector .
