Former President Goodluck Jonathan says he would meet with President Muhammadu Buhari over the lingering feud between the Rivers State Government and the Nigerian army.

Jonathan stated this on Saturday in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital during a condolence visit to Governor Wike following the tragic collapse of a 7-storey building where nine people died.

The former President believes that there must be synergy between the community-based security system, the state and national security architecture.

He said, “I have realised that without the locals you cannot succeed in terms of managing security anywhere in Nigeria. When I was the President, you would have heard about the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF).

“When the Boko Haram (attacks) came to a point, we needed some locals to support the army. Yes, some died in the process, but it helped so much. So I will take it up with Mr President and if there is anything we could do because it’s always good for volunteers (young men) to help the state work with the security services.

“From my experience as a former Deputy Governor and Governor of Bayelsa State and as much as I know Rivers State, if we don’t have that cooperation between our volunteers working with the security services, we will not be able to manage the security challenges of these states.”

Earlier, Governor Wike thorough the Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Mr Kenneth Kobani, told the former President that his administration initiated the State Neighbourhood Safety Corps Agency for the purpose of enhancing the security.

He explained that the state has always supported the security agencies with finances and logistics and will not relent in its efforts.

The All Workers Convergence (AWC) has declared that the lingering new national minimum wage issue was a reflection of the conspiracy between labour leaders and the Federal Government.


AWC National Coordinator, Comrade Andrew Emelieze made this declaration while speaking with journalists in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital at the weekend.

He said that what the group has been seeing is a labour movement whose activities look more like a conspiracy between labour and the federal government to deceive Nigerian workers.


Emelieze said, ”What we have been seeing is a labour movement that has been begging the question, in activities that look more of a conspiracy of labour with the Federal Government to deceive the Nigerian workers and continually postpone the actualization of the new minimum wage.

”The scenario as it is unfolding compels one to re-examine the engagement of labour in this regard. One would not but say that for the workers to have waited for over three years and there seems to be no green light at the end of the day, portrays the labour movement as very weak, conservative and equally not willing to achieve a new minimum wage for Nigerian workers.

”But if labour is ready for the actualization of the new minimum wage, labour knows what to do even with the last aborted strike action by labour suggested that if labour has carried on with the strike action by now, the agitation would have been over.


He urged labour leaders to wake up from its slumber by saving workers from the current hardship in the country.

Emelieze said, “As far as the AWC is concerned, the Nigerian workers are saying that labour should wake up and not sleep over workers’ sufferings, as the situation is becoming more painful, when countries such as South Africa has increased workers’ minimum wage”.

Iranian journalist and women’s rights activist Hengameh Shahidi has been sentenced to more than 12 years in prison on unspecified charges, the official IRNA news agency reported on Saturday.

“Given the confidentiality of the proceedings and the security nature of the case I cannot disclose details about the court’s verdict,” her lawyer Mostafa Turk Hamedani told IRNA.

He said Shahidi had received 12 years and nine months in prison, plus temporary bans on joining political groups, online or media activity, and leaving the country.

Shahidi was advisor on women’s affairs to reformist candidate Mehdi Karroubi during the disputed 2009 presidential election, and has been a fierce critic of the judiciary for locking up journalists and activists.

When the 2009 election sparked rigging allegations and mass protests, she was locked up for three years on charges of propagating against the system, taking part in illegal gatherings and acting against national security.

Shahidi was detained again in 2017 for several months and accused of working for external media groups.

She later wrote open letters denouncing the charges as “baseless lies”, while also criticising reformist politicians for failing to support dissidents.

In May, a copy of her latest court summons was uploaded on her Twitter account, in which she was accused of “making insults”.

When she was arrested the following month, Tehran’s chief prosecutor Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi said: “We saw that everyday she made blatant insults against the judiciary branch and officials by posting very criminal tweets,” according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

President Muhammadu Buhari has departed Abuja for Katowice, Poland where he is expected to attend the 24th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP24) under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The summit which will take place between December 3 and 14, 2018, will be held at the International Conference Centre – a statement issued on Friday by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said.
