Hello, who has been admitted for Optometry and Vision Science? Have you been cleared? Get back to me please. I'm worried. |
PART 3. Valentine’s Day marked a new beginning for me. I’ve never spent a day outside my parent’s house, unless I am on a compulsory camp or some serious business, usually numinous on nature. I was expecting a new adventure. I paid less attention to the white and red bodies by the roadside, I was all about my new Haven of Peace and Tranquillity. I unpacked my luggage, arranged the room and laid out every object to the finest detail. I felt abandoned as my parents left. I wanted to weep but I kept my cool, the waterways have been blocked. Nothing was the same. I have been marooned. I came across a decent hostel mate, a 200 level student, he showed me the lay of the land. I would have advised him to take up a part-time job as a tour guide. I kept him as a friend, he was my BFF until the strike kicked in. His explanations made life easier for me, the major hotspots around were more familiar than ever. He also gave me a brief list of the norms everyone else follows. He was a darling. I had to charge my phone, I haven’t been good to the battery although it has served me well. I need that electric juice to make it great again. I picked up the phone, gathered things together and headed straight to the barbershop I’ve told you about. It was a big challenge, I haven’t done that before. Fortunately, I met my new friend, he perfected our meeting (the barber and I). I found an available port, plugged my phone and the battery came to life. I call it, “The Awakening”. Various people with different roots came into the building during my period of stay the experience was great. From the vacuous to the intelligent, everyone made expressions. I made myself a good listener, I was settling in. This was the epicentre of LAUTECH politics for me. I found out there were two parties, two dominant political groups, a vivid replica of APC and PDP on LAUTECH, the acronyms goes thus. NLV and the other is named Liberal Group. You know how two party system can be; fatal, decisive and it’s a choice between bad and worse just like the US elections. Words sound exaggerated to me until I witnessed how department representatives were elected. It’s interesting on it’s own way. Each candidate would try to gather the highest number of students, basically know as campaign. Funny enough, campaigns come on different manners, loitering around the hall was common, WhatsApp group chats become active once again and many more I won’t bother about. Their efforts were made under the umbrella if the political parties, how strange for Freshers. You’re in for a treat if you’re lucky to be a student of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, a dump for politically-active students. I nearly got myself into trouble some months ago, as a trustworthy writer I wrote an article on politics and the frivolous acts in my lecture hall and posted it on the famous ‘LAUTECH ROOM’. I didn’t include my name though, if I did, things would have been grotesque for me. I was unknown to the world but one of the department to-be representatives had to take the blow. God enough, I was able to avoid the stress and it was sensible for me to decelerate my activism. That killed the man in me. The hustle is real... TO BE CONTINUED. PART 4 coming soon... |
The 3rd part will be released based on you guy's comments |
PART 2 5 Star Hostel has five blocks, maybe that’s how the name was derived, each block has three rooms, a big kitchen, a lone toilet and a prison-like bathroom. The bathroom architecture seems absurd to me, it is more of a rectangular box placed vertically on the earth crust. I wish you have an opportunity to grace this, the only port for water to pass goes directly underground and I’ve pictured snakes planning an Animal Farm-like revolt on us. That’s what my mind tells me but that’s probably not happening anytime soon. The bathroom is fair compared to the only toilet three rooms share. A look at the water closet will trigger a negative reaction in the body system, you only have to get used to it. You’d ask rhetorically, “how did these ceramics get blackened?”. That’s better by the way, water doesn’t come regularly but some ruminant beings remain indifferent about this, they will use the toilet, turn a blind eye to the residue they had made and leave it unto the next user to deal with. Desperate boys would stratify the ‘matter’. This would end up unattended to until the waste product is infested on my organic degraders, maggots and the likes. No wonder the ceramics are blackened... Everything else is superb if not for the rats that spoilt the show, they made themselves the Grand Warden and the kitchen their altar, someone who plays Clash of Clans would understand that. Rats patrol the kitchen at night, taking care of food crumbs, scrapping food off the stoves and trying to open my beloved pots. I don’t know if they had unfinished business but that’s simply the way they are. They were the Lazarus of our time, my hostel mates and I were the Rich Man. Off to Security, there’s a small entrance into the whole of Five Star, the gate or door should be only 4-5 feet high (I bend every time I have to pass through it) graced by a Security Man whose house is called “the Cubicle”. He likes to play God on every situation no matter the gravity and I’ve heard funny tales of how he was dealt with by some students years ago (the era Five Star was known for it’s rich nightlife and debauchery). The entire compound is fenced and the floor plastered, resulting to a clean environment. Outside, the hostel featured a shopping complex, five shops in total. Two provisions stores, a barbershop, a fashion designer and a branch of a popular telecommunications retailer. We had everything but our hotspots are the Land lady ‘s provisions store and the barbershop. That’s simple by the way, the woman opens her store everyday and we charge our electronic gadgets at the barbershop. The barber is an accommodating man, he brags about the little time he spent at an army barrack, proves himself to be a potential soldier. Let me gist you, he wears Camo too. Don’t try that of you don’t have something to back you up, it might be cataclysmic. Into the spotlights, I will enlighten you on how the barbershop taught me all about Politics in LAUTECH. Brace yourself up, the next part is coming soon... TO BE CONTINUED |

PETER AND THE STRIKE PART 1 As soon as we concluded our semester CBT tests, lectures weren’t flowing they way they used to be, attendance dropped, even saints like me missed classes intentionally. I’m actually a Saint by the look of things, I had no extravagant friend except for these two ladies and a care-free guy we keep seats for ourselves. Let me gist you about that; Our integration was unprecedented. I’ve been by myself for probably two lonely weeks when I met them, the thinner one was on Instagram while lectures were going on being DM’d by one guy, I would name Chris, the chubby lady plugged her earpiece into her earlobes. Serious me, I watched them with contempt and unexpectedly, the chubby one got her earpiece spoilt and she asked for mine. She looked just like my elder sister, from her body specs to her face, I would have asked Dad if he hadn’t make a mistake out of wedlock but she had a different surname, one distant from the one I keep, I felt a little bit relaxed by them. As a gentleboy, I gave her mine, paid attention to my next lecture and she returned my earpiece though what I did had no good basis, I felt good about it and I equally saw it as a good omen. I slept on that... The next day, I woke up late, not because I did anything stressful the other day but let me tell you I woke up late, I rushed everything got to my Faculty hall, SIFAX and I had nowhere to seat, the expression on my face was quizzical as almost every seat had an owner. I made up my mind looking up to God maybe I might obtain mercy, then she saw me. She smiled at me and I returned the kind gesture, she surely has something in package for me. I went over to her seat, exchange greetings and I told her the situation I’d dragged myself into. She had an extra seat, I noticed. But how can I get to sit on it? She was the kind one, told me to sit BUT she saved it for someone else, the care-free guy. I took the seat. The day passed by I kept my silence, very conscious of my environment and I uttered little in words, to spice things up I bragged my matric number which I know none of them can beat. That was easy, my number was way up the pile. Another good omen... The guy came into the hall around 10:30 a.m., dropped his school bag and zoomed off to the left side of the hall, a region of the hall I desist. He came back looking used and expired, a result of his trademark jokes he makes with ladies. Simply he was a darn womanizer... Let me cut that part short by saying we had a HEA, Happily Ever After just like in romance novels. Returning to my original texts, my mind made me believe our exams aren’t coming soon , the thought was devilish but came pass as time would tell. The exam got boycotted, this was lead by the SUG personnel, they claimed elections should come before the semester exam. Only a LADOKITE can explain what politics means in LAUTECH. The atmosphere changed though we were later addressed by a Student Affairs staff, I still felt tense. The election came the following week, accompanied by post election violence. School infrastructures were destroyed by rioters leading to the closure of the school gate or perhaps the school at large. TO BE CONTINUED... |

The Ministry of Sports has explained that it sanctioned the appointment of Chelsea star, John Obi Mikel, as Team Nigeria’s captain to the Rio Olympics because it was made to understand that the position went beyond the individual’s Olympic pedigree. There has been uproar in some quarters over the choice of Mikel as captain when there are such Olympic veterans as Segun Toriola, Funke Oshonaike and Blessing Okagbare in the team. But a sports ministry official told The Guardian yesterday that the uproar was unnecessary and capable of causing disharmony in the camp. The official, who pleaded anonymity, said, “we were looking for someone that would be recognizable by every sports follower and in Team Nigeria nobody has such qualities better than Mikel. “Sentiments apart, Mikel is one athlete that every sports lover, from China to the Bahamas, will easily recognise, so we chose him. It is purely for publicity purposes because we want to sell Nigeria to other countries at the Olympics. “Toriola, Oshonaike and Okagbare have served Nigeria meritoriously and we recognise that. They are true patriots and we don’t think that not being the captain of the team would make them less patriotic.” He dismissed the argument that Mikel would not be an effective captain since he will not be with other athletes at the Games Village, adding, “we have Oshonaike as the assistant team captain and she was picked for the position because she has the experience to do the job. “The football team is not in the Games Village because of their schedule, but that does not mean that Mikel would not have any contact with the rest of the team. We plead that people do not say things that are capable of disrupting the harmony in the team.” Meanwhile, Mikel has expressed his willingness to sacrifice for the success of Team Nigeria in Rio, saying he is overwhelmed by the decision to name him captain of the team. Speaking from the U23 team’s camp in Atlanta, Georgia, Mikel told thenff.com: “This is the highest accolade you can ever have as a sportsman and it’s one I am really looking forward to. “I am much pleased and very happy with myself for what I have been able to achieve, and grateful to the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports and the entire country for this opportunity. “My objective is definitely going to be to carry everyone along. I think it’s important that we all work together, it’s important that we all set one goal, and that goal is to be successful, to win medals, to make sure we get gold medals. Our country has not done very well in recent times at the Olympics, so hopefully we can go to Rio and do well.” On the burden his appointment has placed on him, Mikel who is also the captain of the Super Eagles said: “It’s massive, it’s big, it’s not just the football team. I am the captain of the Super Eagles. Sometimes you look at it and you think that’s a big burden, but this is even much bigger, it’s one that I am looking forward to. “If you look at my track record at Chelsea, I have always played for the team, I have always been a team player, I have never been an individual player, so I think this is something I will be carrying into the Olympics and carry into Team Nigeria to make sure that we are successful.” On this being his first Olympics, the 29-year-old midfielder said: “I don’t think it will be a disadvantage. I think leadership is either you have it or you don’t. Sometimes, people grow into leadership and sometimes people are born with leadership qualities. I think I have always been in that leading role since my U-17 days, even when not wearing the captain’s band, I have always had people looking up to me to carry the team.” http://m.guardian.ng/sport/we-considered-several-things-before-naming-mikel-team-nigerias-captain/ |

The Institute of Strategic Management, ISMN, of Nigeria has said recession is good for the development and the expansion of the country’s economy. This was disclosed at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday to announce its 2016 Conference and Annual General Meeting to be presided over by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo. Describing recession as a natural consequence, the 1st Vice-President, ISMN, Mr. Gbenga Oluniyi, said recession was good and necessary to make the country to exploit other capacities inherent in the economy. Oluniyi said, “What is happening now is a natural consequence where you just have to find a way. The current government technically admitted that we are in a recession. To be in a recession is not completely a bad thing; it drives you to think out of the box. “The institute is happy with what is happening now because we really have not been thinking. We have been lazy. The Raw Materials Research and Development Council had carried out studies that in every state of Nigeria, you can find minerals that can be explored and exploited on commercial basis. “This is not being done by the government. We are beginning to see the government look inward now. Absolute reliance on one product to sustain the Federal Government, the 36 states and 774 Local Government Areas is not sustainable. “One, we are not in control of the price of crude oil. Two, we are not adding value to the crude. So, crude oil has become more or less a curse rather than a blessing. So, we believe that this is a temporary situation and the states are beginning to rise up to the challenge.” He added, “Sincerely speaking, we have about 27 states out of the 36 states of the federation in a very difficult situation. The question we should ask ourselves is what have the remaining nine states done differently to keep above troubled waters. “Ogun State is not an oil producing state. The state decided to leverage its proximity to Lagos and today, the fastest growing industrialisation in Nigeria is taking place in Ogun State. You don’t hear of labour unrest in the state because salaries are being paid as at and when due. “Ordinarily, from revenue allocation, Ogun State is one of the states that should be complaining. Other states can also begin to look inwards. Whatever comes from the centre should actually be a bonus to the states.” http://dailypost.ng/2016/07/28/economic-recession-good-nigeria-ismn/ |

kstix:I'm not a misogynist and my comment ain't misogynistic. But we all know politicians and their ways... They have something in common and that's the ability and will to LIE. Dora wasn't a politician when she was at NAFDAC, she was an activists as I would say. Someone even commented that when Hillary Clinton moves her lips, she's momentarily lying and she changes whenever the public does. Meaning she is too flexible to be a president just like Jonathan was |
Part of the pleasure of This Is Acting , then, comes from the game of matching songs to their could-have-been singers. The risk is that people will infer that this is the reject pile. Sia's openness about the songs' background signals either great confidence that they will overcome that stigma or a cynical assumption that our fascination with celebrity interplay is the most powerful attractor of all. More meta yet, the album opens with "Bird Set Free," which comes across as a recap of Sia's career and a manifesto for her self-realization as a songwriter: "I found myself in my melodies ... I'll shout it out like a bird set free." Pitch Perfect 2 and Rihanna reportedly turned it down; Adele recorded it but ultimately left it and other offerings by Sia off her 25 album. Along with several other Acting tracks, "Bird" was produced by Greg Kurstin, who also worked on "Hello" and other 25 tunes; it's underscored by a rolling piano line that would have been at home there. Likewise, Acting 's first single, "Alive," was co-written with the British diva and has a similar outsize-chorus catharsis. But it's a bloodier, more ragged performance than Adele would chance -- when Sia hits the high notes, her voice twists like a metal singer's. This sense of hazard recalls her last album, 1000 Forms of Fear , and the one song here that Sia has said she wrote for herself, "One Million Bullets," is also reminiscent of that record's moods. Of the darker songs on Acting , it's the one you want on repeat. After a few songs, though, the listener begins to worry that since these tracks were all intended as singles, there will be no relief from huge choruses and banging beats. An electronic-marching-band effect comes like an onslaught in "Move Your Body," reportedly written for Shakira , overwhelming what could have been a much more sinuous dance track. By the time one gets to "Unstoppable," which sounds like a Katy Perry reject, Sia's boast that she'll never cease sounds more like a threat. The good news is that in the middle, there are two lighter, wittier tunes that Sia has said were meant for Rihanna: "Reaper" (co-penned by Kanye West ) and "Cheap Thrills." The bad news is that with the five songs that follow, This Is Acting actually starts sounding like the scrap heap. Sia has admitted with refreshing honesty that she writes songs by playing Mad Libs with lists of phrases she stores on her phone; the worst case here is "House on Fire," in which she sings, "I'm a house on fire, and I want to keep burning," over what sounds like bad video-game music. Despite a few highlights, This Is Acting is scattered and forgettable next to the emotional 1000 Forms of Fear . Yes, Sia is upfront that it's more impersonal. It's all part of the concept, but that is no excuse; David Bowie's recent death reminded us how theatrical and constructed pop can be without turning glib. Sia has been an intriguing enough figure in music that it's a letdown to hear her do hack work. That isn't acting -- it's just affectation.

Hillary Clinton became the first woman in history to win the White House nomination of a major US political party Tuesday, securing the backing of Democrats at a convention in Philadelphia. The former first lady, senator and secretary of state took a monumental step on her quest to become American’s first female president, by besting party challenger Bernie Sanders. After a tumultuous convention opening which saw Sanders and Clinton supporters trade jeers and chants, Clinton passed the 2,382-delegate threshold needed for the nomination, setting up a showdown with Republican Donald Trump in November. “History,” said a post on her Twitter account. Although the outcome was a foregone conclusion, the state-by-state vote saw rowdy displays on the convention floor. Some diehard Sanders delegates expressed frustration with their candidate’s defeat, but the divisions seen were much less pronounced than on Monday. Clinton’s nomination was formally put forward by Senator Barbara Mikulski of Maryland, the longest serving woman in the history of the US Congress. Civil rights icon John Lewis, a congressman from Georgia, seconded the nomination. ‘Show a little class’ The Clinton camp is looking to unite the party’s factions. Monday saw disruptive protests and a rancorous fight over leaked emails that showed party bias against Sanders. Frustration boiled over as his delegates jeered speakers who mentioned Clinton. Vice President Joe Biden, who will address the convention Wednesday along with President Barack Obama, dismissed concerns the party was not uniting behind Clinton. “We’ve got to show a little class and let them be frustrated for a while. It’s OK,” he said of Sanders supporters as he toured the convention arena Tuesday. Sanders meanwhile called on his supporters to get behind Clinton. “What we must do, or forever look back in regret, is defeat Donald Trump and elect Hillary Clinton,” he said Tuesday while addressing the California delegation. “In my view, it’s easy — it’s easy to boo, but it is harder to look your kids in the face who would be living under a Donald Trump presidency,” he said. Trump took the usual shots at Clinton during a speech to the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Charlotte, North Carolina, calling her “Crooked Hillary” and charging that her use of a private email account as secretary of state “put America’s entire national security at risk.” A Clinton campaign official said Tuesday’s convention events aim to draw a sharp contrast with Trump. The line-up of speakers will talk about her life-long fights to make a difference. Chief among them will be former president Bill Clinton, who will take the stage during primetime to hail his wife as a “change-maker,” the official said. But Clinton and the others — including mothers who have lost children to gun violence or in clashes with police — will also have the unstated mission of mending fences with Sanders’ army of vocal young activists.
