The main reasons Frederick Lugard unified Northern and Southern Nigeria in 1914 were mostly administrative and economic, not because the regions were naturally one people. Here are the key reasons: 1. Reduce Cost of Administration Britain was spending a lot of money running three separate territories: Northern Protectorate Southern Protectorate Lagos Colony By merging them into the Amalgamation of Nigeria 1914, it became cheaper and easier to govern. 2. Use Southern Revenue to Support the North The South (especially Lagos and the coastal areas) was generating more income through trade (like palm oil and taxes). Britain wanted the wealthier South to help fund the less profitable North. 3. Simplify British Control One central government made it easier for Britain to: enforce policies collect taxes manage trade and railways control security 4. Railway and Trade Integration The British were building railways from the North to the South to move goods (like cotton and groundnuts). A single administration made this more efficient. Important Note The people of the North and South were not consulted, and they had: different cultures different religions different political systems So the union was mainly for British convenience, not local unity. |
