Pedestrian killed in Ogun state: Hit and Run
An unidentified man was killed in a hit-and-run accident on Wednesday at the Magboro end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the incident occurred at about 11 am.

The victim was reportedly attempting to cross the highway when a vehicle, said to be travelling at high speed, knocked him down.

An eyewitness, identified simply as Grace, said the impact threw the victim into the air, after which a commercial bus coming behind also ran over him.

She said the man died on the spot.

“The man was crossing the highway around 11am when a Sienna vehicle hit him. The impact threw him up, and a commercial bus coming behind also hit him.

“People quickly ran to pick him up and move him off the expressway so that other vehicles would not run over him again. But he died instantly. The painful thing is that the vehicle that hit him did not stop. The driver just sped away after the accident,” she said.

Grace also alleged that officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps drove past the scene without stopping to pick up the body.

“Even a road safety vehicle passed here, and they did not stop. I think they were heading somewhere because they were moving in a group. I don’t think they were from this branch. Up till now, the police have not been here,” she added.

Another eyewitness, identified simply as Anas, said the victim’s body was left on the spot for hours without medical attention.

He also claimed that a police vehicle drove past the scene without stopping.

“A police van also drove by and did not stop. When people asked why an ambulance was not called, the truth is that we do not know how to reach an ambulance here, and nobody around had a car to rush him to the hospital,” he said.

He added that many residents gathered at the scene shortly after the accident.

Another witness, who preferred to be identified only as Ore, said identifying the victim had become difficult because his belongings were missing.

According to Ore, the victim’s phone and wallet were taken amid the crowd that gathered around him after the crash.

“It is hard to identify him because when the accident happened, a lot of people gathered. Before you could say anything, his phone and wallet were already gone.

“So there is nothing on him now that anyone can use to identify him or contact his family. He has been lying here since morning, and it is not good,” Ore said.

The corpse was still lying unattended at the scene as of the time our correspondent left the area.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said in a WhatsApp message that action was being taken to evacuate the body.

The incident is one of several hit-and-run crashes reported along the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

PUNCH Metro reported in January that a body believed to be a person knocked down by a vehicle was found by the roadside along the expressway days after the accident occurred. Residents said the victim had been hit by a vehicle, but the body was left unattended and later discovered in a mutilated state

PoliticsAPC Return Ojelabi As Lagos State Chairman by Pullony(op): 4:29am On Mar 04
The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, has secured a second term in office.

Ojelabi was re-elected on Tuesday at the party state congress, held at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos.

No fewer than 2,000 delegates drawn from across the state returned to Ojelabi and others via consensus arrangement at the congress.

Other state executive members re-elected through consensus arrangement are Mr Moshood Mayegun (Deputy Chairman), Dr Adeola Jokomba (Secretary) and Mogaji Oluseye Oladejo (Publicity Secretary).

Others include the Legal Adviser, Mrs Folashade Bakare; Treasurer, Mr Abiodun Ayigbe; Financial Secretary, Mr Banjo Adedoyin-Wasiu; Organising Secretary, Mr Ayodele Adewale and the Youth Leader, Mr Seriki Muritala, among others.

The Chairman of the State Congress Committee, Mrs Stella Okotete, announced the consensus list of State Executive Committee members, which was endorsed by delegates through voice affirmation.

She described the state as the ‘heartbeat of progressive politics and the proud home of President Bola Tinubu,

Okotete, in her earlier address, said the state remained the foundation of progressive ideology, discipline, inclusion, strategic leadership and people-focused governance.

She said: “The strength of Lagos is a vital part of our party. It is vital to the strength of our party nationwide.

“According to the Constitution of our party, Article 20, there are approved guidelines for the state congress which today I am here to conduct.

“The congress must be democratic, transparent and in strict compliance with the Constitution of our party. When consensus is adopted, it must follow due process as described.

“This congress is not a contest of enemies. It is a contest of progressive family members united by ideology,” she said.

She reminded aspirants and delegates that qualification to contest and vote was guided by the provisions of the Constitution.

According to her, only registered members who have fulfilled the necessary requirements, including payment of prescribed fees and compliance with eligibility conditions, are qualified to participate.

Okotete said: “The processes are binding on all members and everyone must collectively respect the outcome.

Our mandate is clear. It is to ensure a peaceful, credible and orderly congress that reflects the unity and maturity of our great party, the All Progressives Congress.

“I urge our aspirants today to demonstrate sportsmanship and our delegates to vote with conscience and commitment to the continued growth of APC in Lagos State.”

According to her, leadership in the party is service and unity remains its greatest strength.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State commended the party for demonstrating supremacy across the country, adding that the state chapter is strengthened and unified.

Sanwo-Olu said Lagos APC has proven its commitment to a common goal of building the best party structure in the state, unmatched by any other.

“In the entire country, we have demonstrated that the party is supreme,” he said.

“We have shown to everybody that for us in Lagos, we are invited and we are strengthened by the unity of purpose.

He extended special appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, adding that under his leadership, the party ensures ample room for everyone who wishes to join, while upholding its core objectives and fostering an environment where all members can participate meaningfully.

In his acceptance speech, Ojelabi highlighted the party’s strengthened structure and electoral successes.

“As I reflect on the journey of the past four years, I am filled with pride in all we have accomplished together, from strengthening our party structure to securing victories at IPUs,” he said.

“We have demonstrated that the APC is not just a party, but a movement—a movement for progress.”

Ojelabi described the upcoming elections as a fresh opportunity to showcase unity and collective resolve, adding that party members should deepen engagement, remain steadfast, and work collaboratively to sustain good governance and sustainable development for Lagosians and Nigerians.

“The future of Lagos State and Nigeria depends on our dedication and our ability to work together,” he said.

“Let us strengthen our bonds, reach out to every community, and ensure that no voice is left unheard and no hand is left idle in this mission.”

Ojelabi addressed the younger generation, pointing to the party’s practical steps toward inclusion.

He said all 376 councillors in Lagos fall within the youth age bracket, adding that the party has also elected the “youngest assistant woman leader” for the state chapter as a deliberate effort to empower women and youth.

“To the younger generation, you will see the practical demonstration we have displayed,” he said.

“We have 376 councillors, all of them within the age bracket. And today, you can see another practicalisation of our intention to strengthen and make sure that women vote. And that is why we have elected a youngest assistant woman leader for the state. She is one of you. She is here to represent you. She is here to govern you.”

The ratified State Executive Committee includes Moshood Olanrewaju as Deputy Chairman; Adeola Jokomba as Secretary; Azizat Adejumoke Mariam as Assistant Secretary; Babajide Aboyade Sunday and Olayinka Olusanya as Vice Chairmen; Muyideen Abayomi as State Zonal Vice Chairman; Folashade Bakare as Legal Adviser, with Adebila Adewummi as Assistant Legal Adviser; Abiola Aigbe as Treasurer, assisted by Olugbenle Sonola; Banjo Adedoyin as Financial Secretary, with Olaleye Ganiyat Olufunke as Assistant Financial Secretary; Ayodele Adewale as Organising Secretary, alongside Sanwo-Olu Adebayo Oladimeji as Assistant Organising Secretary; Seye Oladejo as Publicity Secretary, supported by Yesiru Karamo as Assistant Publicity Secretary; Adeniyi Kehinde as Welfare Officer; Bikuda Adedoyin Tolulope as Auditor, with Wusu Shakiru Ajiyan as Assistant Auditor; Shola Eletu as Woman Leader, assisted by Damilola Sonayan James; Seriki Muritala as Youth Leader, with Vincent Adukwu as Assistant Youth Leader; Afolabi Dada as Special Leader; Goshe Oyebola Rasheed as Senatorial Youth Leader; Mathew Eshinlokun as Senatorial Youth Leader (Central); Balogun Olugbenga as Senatorial Youth Leader (East); Deaconess Ajiwonuola as Senatorial Woman Leader (Central); Olawoyin Modupe as Senatorial Woman Leader (East); and Aishat Sanni, Yomi Olubando, Bamidele Olufemi and Ngozi Catherine as Ex-Officio members.
