I jumped some exercises especiall those involving JavaFx.
ProgrammingProgramming: What I Have Learned by PureHustle(op): 12:51am On Nov 11, 2025
I started coding in 2024. I picked up Java using Introduction to Programming Using Java Version 9, JavaFX Edition May, 2022
David J. Eck, even though I lacked consistency: switching from one career path to another by the end of that year, I was at the fifth chapter of 13, thus I understood types (primitive/reference), conditional/loop statement, subroutines(methods), scanner class, and some OOP stuff. I aimed to understand programming first before I niched, cus the book contains reasonable number of exercises and quizes that would make one to start thinking like a programmer but people keep telling me I should start building stuff, that I didn't need to understand everything first blah blah blah you know that kind of advice from people who can already center a <div>. So, I took the common step and went to YouTube. I downloaded a two-year-old full playlist on how to become a full-stack Java developer in 50 days by an Indian guy. I even requested that he send me the handout he used, which he kindly emailed to me. (He later emailed me when he was about to start a new cohort, sha ... lol). The first 25 videos cleared Java core, from variables to OOP to collection/generic to multithreading to JavaIO package, I crammed along, the objective was to go through frontend with Angular, JPA, hibernate, database, building tools, pattern and spring/springBoot. Just in 50 days! I stopped around video 36 or 37. Why did I stop? I stopped when I realised that most offers for Java developers are kind of tied to E-commerce, fintech or mobile dev and being honest with myself, I knew I knew nothing worthy of getting such an offer (without a degree).

Fast forward to March 2025, I joined 3MTT cohort 3, chose the software development course, and the stack used is the popular MERN/PERN stack. We were taught HTML/CSS, JS and React with links to YouTube videos (Mosh and NetNinja tutorials populated everywhere) ...

To be continued

Java is good if you can pick that up especially for the Nigerian job market. Most of the fintech and banks use Java and c#. If you are confident in Java start applying to jobs now especially with all the graduate trainee roles that are available.
How about I pick up Java/SpringBoot + leetcoding in Java after my project, while I work on another MERN stack project to add to my resume? Hope I would not be overwhelming myself? I am not a graduate, I got no degree.

Yes but it’s been two years not six months. A capstone project of a movies recommendation app after two years especially with all the advancements we have now doesn’t cut it.
Like I explained boss, 2024 was all about Java and inconsistency, I start web dev around March this year. Besides, all that don't matter. What matters is how to move forward. Any advice is welcome.

Also the capstone project is stupid. Movie recommendation with api 😂. With the advancements in AI this is what is your project. Maybe you don’t know what they are asking in interviews now.
That's what the programme requires, the objective is to teach the students how to connect frontend to backend, creating api endpoints, working with database etc... Below is the project overview:

The bitter truth is that you don’t want this enough. Feb 2024 till now and you are confused. Learning to code today is so much easier than ever. You have AI tools. In our time we would go on stack overflow to ask questions and get bullied and our accounts flagged. At a point I had like 20 different accounts on Stack overflow. If you are confused, I don’t know what to say to you. Maybe you should choose another career.
Thanks for the reply, I was hoping to go for some free virtual interships when the project is concluded, building my resume around it as well as the 3mtt programme (I have none now). Also, I hope to get my hand wet on some other projects that would solidify my knowledge of the stack or start leetcoding (I have a very strong mathematics and reasoning background). Do you have any suggestion? I hope that would be very helpful.

I usually don’t comment on posts like this, but for posterity’s sake, I’ll say this once more:

If you’re a Nigerian and you’re privileged to have supportive parents, access to a laptop, internet, and electricity, and you don’t have to worry about food you don’t realize how much God has done for you. Take it extremely seriously.

It doesn’t matter how you start. I began with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Today, I work with financial systems, and I recently got a job that allows me to use Objective-C, Java, AWS, and Heroku. Tech has opened doors for me I never imagined, and I’m still just getting started. My next goal is to transition into AI engineering or integrate AI into my current work as a programmer.

Don’t let negativity on the internet discourage you. Just the other day, a few fresh Unilag graduates landed top jobs with major firms in the UK. Personally, I left Nigeria for Chile, and even as a student, I was working with the biggest bank in the entire country.

If you’ve been given the privilege of the right environment and tools, don’t take it for granted. Tech can change your life. it changed mine.
I started coding in Feb. 2024 with Java, even though there was a lot of inconsistencies, I was able to grab the fundamentals of Java (OOP concepts, Arrays, String and its methods etc) nothing really practical. By March this year, I started software development with federal govt. #3mtt programme, due to the tech stack used, I moved into MERN stack development, I am currently working on my capstone project which is a full stack movie recommendation app using external API (TMDB) ... Boss, the road seems very far, this is my second year and there is no even a glimpse of getting there. The worst, most of these online intership programs are putting Bsc as a requirement and that, I don't have.

Not everyone can withstand the learning curve of tech. Just imagine how long it will take to be a full fledged backend developer, the myriad of tech stack to learn and you want to start getting jobs in 6 months and also earnings 6figures salary dey play.
