WWE RAW REVIEWS RECAPS AND REACTIONS Bring the Pain The last time Finn Balor and Seth Rollins squared off for a brand new WWE championship, Finn shocked the world. Finn became the inaugural Universal championship for about 22 hours thanks to an injury Finn sustained in that match at Sethâs hands. On the other side of that coin, Seth never forgot the fact Finn defeated him at SummerSlam seven (!!) years ago, so he entered this match with redemption on his mind. Maybe I did it here, maybe I did it amongst friends, but I shared so many thoughts over the years about Finnâs attitude once he came back from that injury. As a character, he never demanded his rematch. He never even seemed that bothered by the fact that he held the championship for less than a day. Finn got robbed, straight up and down. No diss to Seth at all because things happen in that ring, but the fact still remains. During this match, Finn showed just a lot of bother. He Power Bombed Seth in the barricade, then asked Seth how he liked that since that same move put Finn out of commission all those moons ago. Finn picked on Sethâs injured shoulder, and showed a viciousness that he rarely exhibits as a member of Judgment Day. Even reminded Seth exactly what his name is in case he forgot. Sethâs injury made any outcome feasible. Finn defeating a one-armed Seth feels like a heel move but it also gets him one step closer to redemption. Seth coming out on top while nursing an injury gives him a lot of juice as a face. Who doesnât like a good guy overcoming the odds? Seth gutted out a win with a Stomp after the first attempt failed. This makes a lot of sense because Seth is incredibly over and itâs not a bad move going with him as an inaugural champ or at least putting him in the match for said championship. But I still think Finn getting the title is the better story. Besides enhancing Judgment Day, it exorcises those demons that spouted all those years ago. Finn as a possessed heel defending his championship on a revenge tour just sounds fantastic. Iâm not down on Seth winning for the reasons I said, but I canât help but think WWE missed an opportunity. Hopefully they circle back to this story one way or another and give Finn a chance to right some wrongs. Even if it doesnât come at Sethâs expense. B-Sides 3 The Hard Way Iâm pretty sure most astute viewers picked Seth Rollins in the triple threat featuring Seth, Damian Priest, and Shinsuke Nakamura. âHowâ he got the got the win remained the question. Well, they answered it with a really dope opening tournament match and a great Raw opener. We got each man squaring off one-on-one, along with some psychology in the form of Damianâs hurt left leg. In fact, one might argue that if not for that leg, Damian wins the match. The leg gave way when he put Seth in prime position for a top rope Razorâs Edge. Shinsuke focused on that same leg and tried making Damian submit. But with Shinsuke focused on Damianâs gimpy leg, he forgot about Seth. Seth crashed on top of Shinsuke with an incredible Frog Splash (seriously, the man changed directions mid-air) and then finished the King of Strong Style with a Pedigree. Not the greatest looking Pedigree, mind you, but he got the job done. Props to them for protecting Damian here. After his match with Bad Bunny at Backlash, and just all his work with Judgment Day over the past few months, he deserves all the good things. Whoâs the Man I wasnât sure when Brock Lesnar might show his face this week. And yes, if you watched Raw, you know thatâs indeed a loaded statement. Would he make Cody Rhodesâ life miserable during his match against Finn Balor and Miz, or attack him if Cody faced Seth later? Turns out we got the former and whew, we got a lot of it. Cody hit Finn with a Cross Rhodes, then hit Miz with not one, not two, but three Cross Rhodes. Right before the ref finished the three-count, Brock appeared in all black and snatched Cody out the ring quicker than my mom used to snatch me out of any misdemeanor if I forgot my home training. No DQs in triple threat matches, meaning the match continued. Finn finished off Miz with the coup de grace, while Cody felt two F-5âs, including one through the commentary table. Brock is a legitimate scary human being. He showed up with stitches in his forehead and a black left eye, directing all his anger at Cody and the audience at home. I mean, look at it! Brock wants Cody at Night of Champions. As Corey Graves said, Cody focused so much on âfinishing the storyâ that he didnât finish the job that is the Beast. Dope match but everything with Brock made it better because it felt real. Brock remains one of the few cats on the roster who makes all of this feel like reality. When he said he wants a fight with Cody, part of me thinks they might just find an alley in Saudi Arabia and get it on right there. Thatâs what separates Brock from everyone else in WWE. Thatâs why he gets the big money and why he comes and goes as he pleases. As a footnote, Miz once again approached Shinsuke for a partnership after they both missed the mark during the tournament. Shinsuke declined, of course, and instead challenged Miz to a one-on-one match next week. ` Guess Whoâs Back? âGo Ireland!â Of all the things Trish Stratus said during her heel promo this week, that made me laugh the hardest. Trish rocked a t-shirt with Becky Lynch missing poster plastered on the front. She even handed out missing posters in the locker room. After one perfectly timed fake out Trish played on the audience, Becky actually returned. She got physical with Trish, because of course, and we know an eventual match is on the horizon this summer. But more great work from Trish. The aforementioned âGo Ireland,â messing with the crowd, working in a story about her daughter and Beckyâs daughter, and a perfect delivery. Ill Street Blues Look, any segment with Dom gets an appropriately referenced prison-related rap song. Anyway, Rhea Ripley squashed Dana Brooke in a match Dana asked for because she has a death wish. Dana got in one shotgun dropkick but that was pretty much it. After getting the W, Rhea continued decimating Dana, which brought out...Nattie! Nattieâs back and wants her title shot but also stood up to a bully. Setting up Rheaâs next true challenger (Nattie) is the only reason this match happened. I preferred an actual match for Rhea and more than what we got. I suppose they think Dana is a sentimental figure, and she can be, but thereâs no real investment since we have no reason to invest. The General (Salute Me) First off: GUNTHER is blessing Raw with his presence next week. We learned as much from the rest of Imperium as they shouted it to everyone within earshot. Sami Zayn & Kevin Owens didnât care, plus they Giovanni & Ludvig interrupted them. So, yeah, a match ensued. And it was a fun one! Imperium lost but they hung with the tag champs and showed they belong in the same ring as them. Thatâs the best we can ask for in this type of impromptu match that introduces a team to an audience who might not watch wrestling on Friday nights. How will GUNTHER feel about the L? The Second Coming âThis is fine.â Thatâs what I thought as the cameras showed us Sonya Deville & Chelsea Green walking around backstage with a petition. But then they ran into The Way. For those who donât watch NXT, thatâs Candice LeRae, Johnny Gargano, Dexter Lumis (kinda), and former NXT Womenâs champion Indi Hartwell. While this makeshift family of two parents, their grown daughter, and her psychotic husband possibly got on Karen & Sonyaâs bad side, Johnny let it slip that âheâ is coming back soon. Candice isnât enthused and Dexter is on the fence. Who is the he? Itâs gotta be Ciampa right? No way Austin Theory comes back to this group for a couple reasons, but Ciampa fits right in with his former best friend and tag partner. Iron Maiden Zoey Stark picked a fight with Nikki Cross. Itâs her first night on Raw so why not? If you missed Zoey on NXT, picking fights is pretty much her thing. Not only did she pick a fight, but she won it as well. Another short womenâs match that I wish went longer. Itâs great they made Zoey look dope in her debut but Nikki deserves a little better than that. Right? And the division as a whole does too. Usual Suspect Dom is the most hated man in WWE. Well, on camera anyway. That man has enough heat to power my entire county. Dom Dom picked a fight with Xavier Woods when the latter interrupted Mamiâs backstage interview. Xavier challenged Dom to a match and Mami accepted on his behalf. Dom gets better in the ring every time I see him, combining his great character work with the in-ring action. Dom picking up the W makes sense here because they need to ride this Dom thing until the wheels fall off. They protected Xavier via Rhea interfering and Dom having a fist full of tights on his roll up pin. Does this set up a longer feud with New Day and Judgment Day? Xavier didnât look like a man ready to just move on and let bygones be the thing they normally are. If thereâs one negative criticism for the segment, itâs that Nattie didnât show up. She already poked her nose in Rheaâs business once, why not do it again? The Choice is Yours Otis has a decision to make pretty soon. The big man wrestled Mustafa Ali and found himself on the wrong end of a butt whooping. He has Chad Gable in one ear and Maxxine in another, which confuses him and, more importantly, distracts him. I thoroughly enjoyed Raw this week. The tournament matches rocked the world. stories moved along, we got some debuts, and a big return. I wish the womenâs matches went longer and we didnât get as many recaps of past action, but there wasnât a lot of fat on this episode. For a three hour show, thatâs sometimes all I ask |

WWE BACKLASH REVIEWS RECAPS AND REACTIONS One night after an awesome episode of Friday Night SmackDown, WWE returned to San Juan, Puerto Rico for its Backlash event. The crowd once again treated us to a special atmosphere and WWE paid them off with one hell of a show. My thinking after the Cody Rhodes vs. Brock Lesnar match was announced was that by the end of it, we would know pretty much everything about how WWE truly views the former and his place in the pecking order. If you thought he should have defeated Roman Reigns to win the WWE Universal championship in the main event of WrestleMania 39, and the powers that be were wrong for not doing so, he absolutely had to win here, and maybe even win clean. Pretty much any other result would have put him into a box he clearly shouldnât be in. Thankfully, they made the right call. Rhodes pinned Lesnar. How it happened absolutely matters, but this was as clean a win as you could reasonably expect Cody to get. He was an actually smart babyface and attacked Lesnar before the bell, blasting him with chair shots while it was still legal and only stopping once the match officially got underway. He did as much damage as he could, before he started taking damage of his own. Once he did, Lesnar well and truly made him âearn it,â as he put it, although not to such a degree that it was a clear mismatch. Lesnar didnât treat him like a lower level guy to be squashed but rather an equal. Late in the match, Lesnar suffered a cut that left his face, the mat, and even Cody covered in blood. I donât know if it was planned but it made for some memorable visuals, notably a bloodied Lesnar screaming as he had Rhodes in a Kimura. And thatâs where the finish came, with Cody countering by stacking Brock and pinning his shoulders to the mat while in the submission, improbably scoring the three count there. It was fast, and unexpected, but it was a clean pinfall victory. Again, I donât think you could have gotten much more for Rhodes here. They knew what they had for the insanely hot Bad Bunny match and still chose to close the show with Cody scoring this win. Thatâs pretty damn meaningful overall, especially considering heâs the guy theyâre going to be counting on to sell shows back home. The match may not have been a classic, but they absolutely did the right thing with it. The greatest and best match ever When I tell you the atmosphere for this match felt like a WrestleMania main event, I mean I genuinely got that feeling I used to only ever get for major UFC main event fights. That kind of nervous energy that makes you stand up at attention and start shadow boxing and shit. When Bad Bunnyâs music hit, the pop was thunderous, an all timer of a reaction. They started singing his song as he danced to the ring with a kendo stick and he felt like the biggest star on Earth in that moment. You almost felt lucky to have him here for this. Then, of course, he went out and performed his ass off like he does everywhere in his life. This man sells better than half the current WWE roster. His timing is good, his instincts are good, even his punches are solid! At one point, he hit a Falcon Arrow and it looked every bit as good as if it was Priest doing it. Heâs also an absolute mad lad, willing to take bumps you wouldnât think a world famous music star would be. Priest â who did a fantastic job protecting him and making sure he was safe while still making it look great â hit him with a Falcon Arrow of his own off a rig through a table out in the crowd. Letâs throw in psychology while weâre at it, as he injured Priestâs leg and then put all his focus on that. Okay, Iâm going pretty far here but he legitimately showcased so much in this match. It was a brilliantly done match even before it broke down with The Judgment Day and Rey Mysterio getting involved. And then it really went over the top when none other than Carlitoâs music hit for one hell of a great surprise. He teamed with Mysterio to fight off Finn Balor and Dominik Mysterio. Then, Savio Vega showed up to get involved too. The response to all of this in San Juan was something truly special. You had to see it and hear it to believe it. Somehow, the rest of the match was even better than the first half. They teased Bunny winning with the Figure Four â that bad leg! â but ultimately had him hit Priest with the Canadian Destroyer for the pinfall and the victory. After, he was joined by all the babyfaces who had come out previously and hoisted on their shoulders in celebration while the crowd continued going insane for all of it. This was legitimately some of the most fun Iâve ever had watching a pro wrestling match. The unexpected breather In a strange change of pace, a match involving The Bloodline, against the likes of Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, and Matt Riddle no less, was put in something of a cool down spot, sandwiched between the bonkers Street Fight and Rhodes vs. Lesnar. It was a breather for a crowd that never seemed to need to find a second wind. Still, they worked so slow it felt as though they were trying to calm everyone down after they were so very hyped for the match before it. Hell, at one point during an extended beatdown of Zayn, they started chanting âWe Want Reigns.â Yeah. They eventually got the crowd going and into it well enough, even if they didnât have the same energy as they did prior. Part of that was the nature of the match itself, which was heavily based around the ongoing story of how well The Bloodline would be able to get along. To that end, Solo Sikoa and Jey Uso ramped up their issues with each other in a big way, arguing over who should be in the match and damn near coming to blows just before nearly losing the match. It also looked as though when Sikoa had the chance to go after either Zayn or Jey, he was about to choose the latter. Soon after, he very nearly hit him with a Samoan Spike. It once again nearly cost them. In the end, though, they managed to overcome their issues and win the match, with Sikoa pinning Riddle after the Spike when he snuck a tag that Riddle didnât see. They did a good job advancing the story here, but it came at the expense of a better match. Considering what they were going to be doing, though, it makes a lot of sense why they put it where they did. Hey, they canât all be absolute bangers, right? Brutality > Emotions This one was emotionally charged right from the start. Zelina Vega was given a heroâs welcome, and before she ever got in the ring for introductions she was ringside hugging her family, who were in the front row to watch her challenge for the SmackDown womenâs championship. When she was introduced shortly after, she was openly crying. Credit to whoever decided to let that moment breathe before introducing Rhea Ripley, because the crowd responded with a standing ovation as Vegaâs tears flowed freely. It made it feel so much more special. It was so well done, with Vega so emotional, and Michael Cole mentioning she was dedicating this to her father, who she lost on 9/11, I started wondering if WWE was planning a surprise and doing a switch here. The way they laid out the match furthered the thought of that as a possibility, with Vega paying homage to Eddie Guerrero and getting a nice flurry that seemed to build to the potential of something more. But Ripley, the dominant champion she is, snuffed that out in a hurry. She used one kick, and a powerful Riptide to emphatically win the match to retain her title. In hindsight, it was always going to be this way. And thatâs how it should be, all things considered. IYO! IYO! IYO! The story going into this match was all about the cracks forming in Damage CTRL and what kind of effect that has had on SKY, or would possibly have in her shot against Bianca Belair and the Raw womenâs championship. To that end, SKY came out for the match by herself, with Bayley and Dakota Kai nowhere to be seen. This was a point of reference for commentary, who played up the fact that there have been issues and âsome on social media believe Bayley is holding IYO back.â Meanwhile, the live crowd was 100-percent by her, cheering every time she got any bit of offense in and booing anytime Belair returned fire. It felt a bit strange at first, considering they were cheering the heel and booing the babyface, but Bianca did a great job of rolling with the punches. They also proceeded to deliver an insanely strong opener. I canât say enough about the work these two put in. They were snug but still smooth and able to remain physical without slowing down one bit. There were a couple of near falls in there that felt like WrestleMania with how invested the crowd was. It even started to feel possible SKY would steal the victory. But, as I mentioned, this story is about Damage CTRLâs fracture and the cracks grew much bigger thanks to Bayley more or less costing SKY the championship, even though she was only trying to help. This match did a great job of making clear that SKY no longer needs to be in the group to see great success, if she ever did before, and in fact remaining in it is actively holding her back. The other story is Belair becoming âthe longest reigning womenâs champion of the modern era.â This victory allows WWE to call her as much, so she was always going to win, even if it started feeling like maybe she shouldnât. The good news is these two are on the same brand going forward. We definitely need to see this again sometime. David Stomps Goliath Seth Rollins, predictably enough, was insanely over the moment his music hit the loud speakers. Yes, they sang. And they kept right on singing when the loud speakers got quiet. Rollins stood in the ring, bathed in a spotlight, getting showered with his tune while Omos stood in the corner and waited. Until he didnât. I wondered how they would handle this match, considering not just the size difference but the general apathy towards Omos in general. Brock Lesnar got over by lifting him up for the F-5. That was all he needed. Rollins would have no such advantage. So I thought it was brilliant to have Omos interrupt that special musical moment by booting Rollins in the head. The crowd despised him for it. This crowd was such that they made it easy on him, but there wonât be many opportunities to get over as a heel to that degree, and Omos did pretty damn well with it. He played to the crowdâs hatred wonderfully, and he sold his ass off for Rollins. Basically, he was a perfect heel. Omos managed to kick out of not just one but two Stomps. Rollins, desperate, went as big as he possibly could to get the job done â going up to the top rope and hitting a SUPER STOMP. That was enough to get the pin and the victory to a huge ovation. This was a million times better than expected, and Omos in particular deserves a lot of credit for his work here, maybe the best heâs ever been in a WWE ring. A-Town Down Austin Theory, Bobby Lashley, and Bronson Reed had the unenviable position of trying to follow two great singles matches with a triple threat for the United States championship where the finish was basically guaranteed. Despite this, they had a fairly entertaining match, though it was something of a sprint. Reed did a couple big spots, which is pretty much anytime a man of that mass comes off the top rope. He generally looked the part here, and showed why Triple H wanted to re-sign him. Meanwhile, Lashley was booked strong enough despite taking the loss. Thatâs because Theory, the little shit heel that he is, took advantage of Lashley spearing Reed by throwing Bobby out of the ring and stealing his pinfall. Iâm not terribly sold on Theory, and it says something that he was the least memorable of the three guys in this match despite the fact that heâs coming out of it as champion. Weâll see where they go from here, now that the post-Draft rosters take effect this coming week. I was blown away by how great this show was. Give Puerto Rico a WrestleMania already. Grade: A |
