Nairaland / General / How To Monitor Your Children On Social Media by Qofoni: 9:34am On Jul 18, 2017 |
Despite the benefits of social media platform for your children; such as having access to information and developing a sense of self, it has disadvantages too. This article suggests some guidelines which parents should follow with respect to the use of social media by their children. Consider Your Ward Age It is important you allow your child to clock 13 years of age or older before he/she signs up for Facebook or any other social media platform; though this is the stipulated age limit set by this site, it can’t prove whether the user is actually above the age limit. That’s why as a parent, you ensure that your ward is above the age limit before joining these platforms. Set Rules Even when your child is old enough to use their own computer, make sure he/she is aware that rules exist and have to be followed. Stress the importance of these rules and make sure they are enforced. If the child kicks against the set rules, strip them of their privileges till they understand the importance of the rules. Proximity Of Your Home PC If the computer at home is used by everyone, it is important you station the PC in a central location. Putting the PC in the open will prevent your ward from visiting inappropriate websites, as everything will be done in the open. Vet The Pictures Your Child Uploads On Social Media Most children enjoy sharing their pictures with their friends on the social media platform. There are chances that your loved doing that too. If so, make sure you are aware of the kind of pictures he/she is sharing. It is important you vet their post prior to it being published on their social media platform. Be A Good Example Children emulate the behavior of their parents. As a parent, if you visit a website you prohibited for your children, surely they will emulate and espouse such habit. Install Filtering/Monitoring Software: Install software that will help you to keep track of the website you child has visited. This software will record information that helps you to know what your ward is doing while making use of the internet. Limit Their Use Of Internet Set the amount of time for which they can use on the internet. Educate Them About The Dangers Of The Internet Inform and educate them on what is out there and how to keep themselves safe. Create a friendly relationship with them, so they can approach you regarding any matter and make sure you help them find a solution to whatever situation they brought to you. |
