BusinessLeatherback Denies EFCC Allegations Against The Company by Qtsnow(op): 12:33pm On Nov 19, 2023
[/b]
In the fast-paced world of fintech, the recent turmoil surrounding Ibrahim Ibitade, the CEO of Leatherback, has sent shockwaves through the industry. Allegations of fraud have surfaced, casting a dark cloud over the reputation of a leader and the fintech firm he steers.

The recent allegations against Ibitade come after Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) declared him wanted in connection with allegations of conspiracy and obtaining money under pretence on November 16, 2023.

Leatherback is a digital bank that issues accounts in Dollars, Pounds, and about 14 other currencies, helping merchants and individuals facilitate cross-border banking and payment needs in several countries.
We reached out to Leatherback, and here is what we discovered:

Leatherback and SDQ Facilitators
Leatherback, which has over 50,000 users across its 12 countries of operations, issued an NGN and USD account to a user called SDQ Facilitators. This account received Naira for the FX transactions into the account issued to them by Leatherback. They carried out exchanges from the account—exchanging Naira deposited in their account for USD, which they could then initiate a payout to the final beneficiary from their USD account. Leatherback has no affiliations with SDQ Facilitators and its clients.

EFCC Saga
In September 2023, Leatherback was notified by the EFCC that the account maintained by SDQ facilitators had been used to possibly perpetuate fraudulent activities. Leatherback immediately started providing the authorities with all the required information to support and aid their investigation. Leatherback took those allegations seriously, and as soon as they came to their attention, they initiated a rigorous internal investigation.
Leatherback was present at the EFCC office every time the EFCC team requested a meeting duly represented by their Head of Compliance in both the Lagos and Abuja offices of the EFCC, providing clarifications to all required questions. Leatherback supported the EFCC investigation by making available over 2,000 printed documents to provide as much clarification as possible. Leatherback also filed a SARs report in the UK and Nigeria.

Leatherback’s Findings
Once the EFCC investigations had reached a point where Leatherback had made all the necessary clarifications, they carried out an internal investigation into transactions made by SDQ Facilitators.
The company found that SDQ Facilitators began processing a significantly high volume of transactions from May to August. The account’s transactions were found to closely mirror those processed by Hekima International, a previous FX brokerage firm on the platform. This suggests that Hekima may have redirected some of its clients to SDQ Facilitators.
The internal investigation turned up a few victims who revealed that they were introduced to SDQ Facilitators by a Hekima associate when they were unable to process their transactions on the platform.

Leatherback delisted Hekima International in June 2023 from its platform and restricted account access due to risk and compliance concerns. This decision was prompted by Hekima International receiving third-party USD funds from a flagged sender in the USA.
SDQ Facilitators took over from Hekima with FX transactions until early August, when Leatherback received a notification from its bank that it had suspended all USD transactions for about two weeks. The pressure from this hold unravelled the whole fraudulent practice of SDQ Facilitators.

The internal investigation revealed that SDQ Facilitators had fraudulently collected funds from 3rd parties unknown to Leatherback under the pretence and guise of assisting them with settling USD payments. These victims were also among the most active trading clients with Hekima as of when Hekima still had an active account with Leatherback. Al-Pasie (the complainant who raised the petition against Leatherback at the EFCC) and Nolt Finance are the two victims.

EFCC’s Witch-hunt
Evidence shows that Leatherback willingly offered full access to information, data, and resources required for a thorough investigation. However, what began as a collaborative effort to uncover the truth is starting to resemble something altogether different—a witch-hunt.
In this case, Ibitayo finds himself ensnared in a web of false accusations, a victim of circumstances that threaten not only his professional legacy but also the credibility of the fintech company he leads.

It is pertinent to note that SDQ Facilitators is just an account holder with Leatherback. SDQ facilitators do not have any form of a strategic partnership with Leatherback, nor has Leatherback engaged them for any form of special relationship beyond the regular account services provision. This fact has been shown and proven by the documents and evidence provided to the EFCC.

Speaking with the CEO, it appears that the Leatherback leader has done all that he can and believes he is being bullied. Ibitade asked, “If a commercial bank in Nigeria issues an account to an individual or a business and that business goes to defraud other people, will you declare the CEO of the commercial bank wanted?”

Behind the regulatory procedures and legal jargon appears to be the story of a CEO who, despite active cooperation, finds himself ensnared in a seemingly unending cycle of accusations. The toll on Ibitayo’s well-being and the broader implications for the fintech community necessitates a careful examination of the motivations driving this ongoing scrutiny.

It is thus important to navigate this unfolding narrative with a commitment to fairness and justice, as this tumultuous period demands our scrutiny and a dedication to putting on display the truth, even if it means questioning the nature of the accusations against him.

Art, Graphics & Video2023 Access Art X: Julius Agbaje, Asmaa Jama Emerge Winners Of The Art X Price by Qtsnow(op): 2:57pm On Nov 17, 2023
The Access ART X Prize, a prestigious platform for recognising and nurturing emerging artistic talent from Africa and its diaspora, has announced the distinguished winners of its 2023 edition. After careful deliberation, Julius Agbaje from Nigeria and Asmaa Jama representing the African/Diasporan category were selected as the standout talents from an exceptional pool of finalists. Their selection is a testament to their artistic prowess, unique vision, and potential for global impact.
The winners were announced at a ceremony, held at Access Holdings’ headquarters in Lagos.

Both awardees will receive $10,000 grants towards solo exhibitions at ART X Lagos 2024, providing them with a platform to showcase their evolving artistic narratives and ideas. Additionally, the Nigerian winner will embark on a three-month residency at Gasworks, London, while the African/Diasporan winner will enjoy a residency at Yinka Shonibare's GAS Foundation in Lagos. Both recipients will benefit from tailored mentorship and an invaluable opportunity for cultural exchange.

Prior to the winner announcement, the finalists participated in a two-day ‘Finalist Forum’, designed to equip them with vital presentation skills and offer valuable artistic insights. This immersive initiative featured interactive workshops, expert and peer review opportunities, all under the guidance of esteemed facilitators and industry experts. The finalists then presented their work to the Prize Jury, after which the eventual winners were selected.

Speaking on the Access ART X Prize, Tokini Peterside-Schwebig, the founder of ART X Collective, expressed her excitement, stating: “Our vision to showcase the depth and diversity of contemporary African art to the world revealed a critical necessity, which was the need to nurture and guide emerging talent on the continent to ensure their lasting impact. The birth of the Access ART X Prize was fueled by an ardent commitment to bridging the gap for early-career artists, empowering them to evolve into adept, globally relevant creatives.”

“We are elated that this platform has endured and thrived over the years, marked by substantial growth. The increasing number of annual applications underscores both the vital need for our support and the tangible impact we are having. None of this would be possible without the invaluable support of our sponsor, Access Holdings, who has trusted us and supported our vision for the past eight years.”.

In 2022, the Access ART X Prize expanded its scope to include artists from beyond Nigeria. This expansion marked a milestone in fostering diverse creativity and amplifying the voices of rising talents across the continent. The 2023 edition of the prize garnered an overwhelming response, with over 3,500 applications received from around the world during the 4-week application period. This surge in applications reflects the growing importance of the Access ART X Prize in the art ecosystem and its ability to attract diverse talent from all corners of the globe.

Herbert Wigwe, Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings PLC, added:

“At Access Holdings, we view the Access ART X Prize as more than an accolade; rather, as a catalyst for change. It is a testament to our unwavering commitment to foster creativity and propel the African art industry towards unprecedented heights.

“The Prize also embodies a promise that we will continue to support and nurture the burgeoning talents in Africa; foster diversity, inclusivity, and cross-cultural exchange within the African art scene, and deepen collaborations with partners that bring us closer towards our vision of shaping a brighter, more inclusive future for all.”

Having faced a challenging task in selecting the winners, given the exceptional level of talent and creativity on display, the jury selected Roanna Tella (Nigerian category) and Lawrence Mwangi (African/Diaspora category) for honourable mentions. Both artists will receive prizes of $2,000 and tailored mentorship.

The distinguished jury for the 2023 Access ART X Prize comprised luminaries such as Babajide Adeniyi-Jones (Documentary Photographer), Barthélémy Toguo (Artist), Daudi Karungi (Founder of Afriart Gallery), Emeka Ogboh (Artist), Gabi Ngcobo (Artist, Educator, and Curatorial Director of the Javett Art Centre), and Yesomi Umolu (Director of Curatorial Affairs and Public Practice for the Serpentine Galleries). Jumoke Sanwo served as the curator of the prize for the second year running.

Alien Spaceship Spotted in Lagos? How Nigerians Reacted

Many people were stunned this week when they spotted an unidentified flying object hovering around the sky early in the night in areas like Surulere and Maryland in lagos. Passers by at the Leisure Mall in Surulere had mixed reactions when they spotted a spaceship looking object flying over different buildings and leaving a large shadow of bright purple light in the sky. “Abi dem don come for us ni”, “Wetin be dis one like this” were some of the expressions of confusion and curiosity of eye witnesses at the locations the UFO was sighted. UFOs are usually reported as being sighted mostly in America but never in Nigeria so of course, it had people wondering and talking on social media and blogs in no time.

The so called “Purple Beings” also announced their arrival with a 3D Video on LED billboards around Lagos that shows their spaceship flying over Nigerian monuments like the Abuja City Gate, Dolphin Estate and Ikoyi Bridge before finally hovering over the atlantic ocean and opening its spaceship door to see purple looking creatures quickly descend and disappear into the ocean. Scary!!!

THE 3D VIDEO SEEN ON LED BILLBOARDS HERE

You can only imagine the relief many Nigerians must have felt when they saw posts from Instablog9ja, Tunde Ednut and Pulse revealing that “Alien Invasion” was just the wild creation of some creative guys just having fun. Apparently the “Alien Invasion” was Intense Group; a marketing, media and technology firm’s way of launching “Purple Stardust”, their new Creative Agency into the subconscious of Nigerians. We stan a Genius Marketing Strategy :B Nigerians of course immediately started sharing this video to their friends and family and it has garnered almost 1 million impressions in the last 24 hours.

THE INVASION VIDEO HERE

Intense Group and Purple Stardust CEO - Leye Makanjuola tweeted via X - “We’re here to make statements over and over again and will soon become part and parcel of Nigerian pop culture” he tweeted. "We will infuse the much needed wave of imagination, and entertainment into the creative and media industry and elevate brands’ value beyond the confines of the ordinary," he added. It won’t be far fetched to think that Purple Stardust will go on to create intriguing marketing campaigns to brands who are adventurous enough to try something out of the box

EducationHow He Got Scholarship Worth ₦‎30 Million To Loughborough University by Qtsnow(op): 12:07pm On Oct 26, 2023
How I got scholarship worth N30million with Loughborough University - student, Adebayo Omotola

Never in my wildest dreams did I think I could study at one of the UK’s leading universities on a fully paid scholarship, but that is exactly what happened when I was offered a spot at Loughborough University. And what’s more, the whole process was much easier than you would ever expect. All it took was a few steps and submitted documents and I was on my way. Here’s how it happened.

I initially stumbled upon the Loughborough Development Trust Africa Scholarship (LDTAS) opportunity online in 2020, and their mission to empower African students to drive positive change in their home countries deeply resonated with me. The chance to study at a university renowned for its world-class education was a dream come true.

The first step was to apply for a placement which simply involved filling a form that took about 30 minutes to do. All I had to initially do was provide my details (full name, address, and nationality), show proof of funds to support my studies, and indicate the program I was applying for.

I then provided my academic references, an academic transcript of my undergraduate degree showing the courses I studied and grades, a copy of my degree certificate, my English Language qualifications, and a personal statement. I later found out that all these documents were not even immediately required to submit the application which I found amazing, especially coming from a country where these things may not be readily available for one reason or the other.

I went ahead and nervously submitted my placement application but was still confident knowing I had the favoured honours degree to be accepted. I was also able to state my commitment to returning to my country upon completion of the course to make a notable impact in my country. All these were required for a strong application, and the scholarship team was incredibly helpful throughout the process.

I made my first application in 2020 but, despite receiving a placement, I was unable to get the scholarship due to financial constraints that meant I would be unable to cover the remaining maintenance costs required over the scholarship period which is a key requirement to be accepted. I tried again in 2021, this time having received financial support from my family and personal savings to meet the requirement. But I was once again unsuccessful.

I once again applied in 2023 and this time I made various important changes that I believe played a major part in having a successful application. This time, I moved early to submit my study application a year before in October 2022. This gave me plenty of time to fine-tune my statement which I reviewed countless times. This time, I was truly confident in my application.

I was contacted just a few days later informing me that my application was being considered and a couple of weeks later, I was given a place. My excitement was palpable as, with my placement, I was finally able to apply for the full scholarship. It wouldn’t be an understatement to say my parents could not believe they could see me leave for university abroad without having to pay a dime in tuition.

All that was left was to sort out my accommodation. I was thinking surely this was going to be the difficult part. Getting accommodation in the big City of London felt like a daunting task. You wouldn’t believe I barely broke a sweat. The Loughborough University team was unbelievably helpful with helping me find accommodation whether on or off campus. The school halls were state-of-the-art and the University team provided me with the best and most affordable options off campus to choose from.

Being able to study in a top UK University is a dream come true for me and I’m sure many others have the same dream. I can tell you for certain that there is no better option than Loughborough University in terms of ease of service and optimum reliability. And for a scholarship that covers 100% of successful applicants' postgraduate course taught fees for one year? You just can’t beat that!

WHAT ARE THE FOUR STAGES OF HUMAN DECOMPOSITION?

According to Dr. Arpad A. Vass, a Senior Staff Scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Tennessee in Forensic Anthropology, human decomposition begins around four minutes after a person dies and follows four stages: autolysis, bloat, active decay, and skeletonization.

Stage One: Autolysis

The first stage of human decomposition is called autolysis, or self-digestion, and begins immediately after death. As soon as blood circulation and respiration stop, the body has no way of getting oxygen or removing wastes. Excess carbon dioxide causes an acidic environment, causing membranes in cells to rupture. The membranes release enzymes that begin eating the cells from the inside out.

Rigor mortis causes muscle stiffening. Small blisters filled with nutrient-rich fluid begin appearing on internal organs and the skin’s surface. The body will appear to have a sheen due to ruptured blisters, and the skin’s top layer will begin to loosen.

Stage Two: Bloat

Stage two of human decomposition consists of bloating to the body. Leaked enzymes from the first stage begin producing many gases. Due to the gases, the human body can double in size, giving it that bloated look. The sulfur-containing compounds that the bacteria release also cause skin discoloration. In addition, insect activity can be present.

The microorganisms and bacteria produce extremely unpleasant odors called putrefaction. These odors often alert others that a person has died, and can linger long after a body has been removed.

Stage Three: Active Decay

Fluids released through orifices indicate the beginning of active decay. Organs, muscles, and skin become liquefied. When all of the body’s soft tissue decomposes, hair, bones, cartilage, and other byproducts of decay remain. The cadaver loses the most mass during this stage.

Stage Four: Skeletonization

Because the skeleton has a decomposition rate based on the loss of organic (collagen) and inorganic components, there is no set timeframe when skeletonization occurs.

BODY DECOMPOSITION TIMELINE

24-72 hours after death — the internal organs decompose.

3-5 days after death — the body starts to bloat and blood-containing foam leaks from the mouth and nose.

8-10 days after death — the body turns from green to red as the blood decomposes and the organs in the abdomen accumulate gas.

Several weeks after death — nails and teeth fall out.

1 month after death — the body starts to liquify.
