From the subtle fiqh of Imam al-Bukhari:

Al-Bukhari, in his Sahih, placed in the Book of Sales (Kitab al-Buyu‘) several chapters encouraging trade, such as:
• Chapter: Going out for trade
• Chapter: Trade by sea
He then continued listing related chapters until he reached the chapter titled:�“Chapter: Whoever loves that his provision be expanded”
Under it he recorded the hadith:�«Whoever is pleased that his provision be expanded for him, or that his lifespan be extended, let him maintain the ties of kinship.»
From this we understand that this chapter is directly connected to what came before it. The truth is that there lies a precious insight here: this hadith remedies a serious defect in the hearts of many merchants and businessmen.
For a great number of them, once they earn wealth or become rich, either cut off their relatives or reduce contact with them—for various reasons:
First: Fear that relatives will eye what is in their hands, envy them, or present their needs once they know of their financial ease.
Second: Being so preoccupied with earning that they neglect social occasions and maintaining family ties. As the saying goes: “Two who are never satisfied: the seeker of knowledge and the seeker of worldly gain.”
Thus, this hadith comes to eradicate these whisperings and false assumptions. It teaches that maintaining kinship ties is among the very causes of increase in provision—not, as some imagine, a cause of its decrease.
Included in this is maintaining ties with poor relatives. The best charity is that given to a relative who harbors resentment. And in the authentic narration:�«O Allah, grant the spender a replacement.»
Spending on relatives is both charity and maintaining ties—two deeds that are both established causes for the increase of provision.

So reflect deeply on how al-Bukhari’s placement of this hadith within the context of trade, and his chapter-heading over it, contains a most exquisite and precious insight!
