Ejaloni123: House, my supervisor at the University of Saskatchewan mailed me last night just to inform me that the Dean's scholarship application he filed for me to support my PhD work has been rejected; although there are backup from his side. He categorically stated that this was based on the fact that the committee see me as someone with little or no research experience (I got a direct PhD admission to the department of biomedical engineering). From my supervisor's side the Canadian space agency has given him grants to support some of his PhD students, he later sent me a letter of assistantship that I have been awarded $ 20,000 for up to 4 years. Is this sufficient to show at the embassy, aside this what do the experienced ones think about this. Specifically, I have shown interest in one of the MRI projects the Canadian space agency has funded. If it is $20,000 per year for upto four years then I think it is still a very good funding. It is good to go for the embassy in addition to other financial/sponsorship documents you will need to submit. Wish you all the best. #MyTwoCents |

dimpules8: Hi NLers, please for paper route, do u staple or use file tags to arrange your documents abi spiral binding? Are you provided with envelopes or files in VAC? Thanks. You can staple or use file tags or both. There is no stringent rule for arranging documents. Go to VAC with your documents in your envelope, when you are submitting, they would remove them from the envelope and bag/file the documents before they are sent to Accra, Ghana. #MyTwoCents |

Austinpee4: Just as @QuantumMove01 pointed out, going for a master in HR will favour you considering your qualifications. However, I also will advise you pen down your aspirations and after-study plans in this field with a good SOP so in the long run, it clearly defines your passion in this area. By so doing, you would have sold yourself to a VO to also see the potentials you would be taking to Canada. I believe they will be looking out for that too as every applicant is treated as a potential permanent immigrant and possible citizen irrespective of all the formalities of home ties and returning to home country.
By the way, your CGPA is commendable. Welcome! Got your master admission already? Very true @AustinPee4 A good SOP will help cement his application |

Megziflips: Well I don't have a co-sponsor and I don't really get the concept either. So what are the options? What would be an ideal balance for my dad to have? And even if I'm funded I still count as a dependant? A co-sponsor is another person (uncle, Aunty, cousin, family friend) etc that has the ability (financially) to support your desire to further your studies in Canada. Many people use a co-sponsor in order to prove to the VO that the burden on the main sponsor (e.g your dad) can be made lighter. Please I don't want to sound rude or anything but if you go just take time out to go through previous threads, you will see how applicants have used a sponsor and a co-sponsor to package their documents. Just search nairaland with the keyword co-sponsor. #MyTwoCents |

Megziflips: He has only one dependent currently in secondary school. And does the fact that he generates yearly income of 8million from rent of properties offer any value ?
Also at what exchange rate does the embassy do their conversion? This means he has 3dependants in total since he is sponsoring 3 of you. So when your brother fills the family information form, it will be seen that apart from your brother, the sponsor has two other dependents. I think add a co-sponsor is better. And if the sponsor and co-sponsor can commit themselves by paying some amount into your brother's account will also be a good idea. E.g If main sponsor pays 2.5million into your brother's account and co-sponsor pays 2million into his account. Your brother would have to submit his statement of account and that of his sponsor and co-sponsor. So that the issue of having other dependants is cleared off. They do their conversion at the current official exchange rate. You fill the forms based on the current official exchange rate. #MyTwoCents |

Megziflips: What do you mean by inflow and out flow. 5million is current balance and a yearly income of 8million from renting of houses. What he is meant is the sum of the money flowing in/out of the account 5million or the balance in the account 5million? So I think you have answered the question in that regard. |

Megziflips: Account Statement Inquiry
I have a few questions regarding statement of account that I would like someone to help me with.
1. My bro applied to UWindsor for masters in management program, and the fees is CAD$15,000. How much should my dad have as account statement? If he has account statement of ₦5million and landed properties yielding a total of ₦8million per year, would that be enough?
2. I also applied to some schools for research based MSc with hope of full funding for my program. Assuming I'm granted full funding, will I still need to provide statement of account from a sponsor (my dad)? Or would the funding be sufficient proof of funds? And if I'm still required to provide a sponsor, will the balance stated in question 1 suffice? Will the embassy somehow link our profiles and know that we're brothers with the same sponsor?
@michV @thesoj @yemdogg @Genius000 @justwise @QuantumMove01 @iamlimitless @CannyZionist @Eraytee and any others with knowledge on this, your inputs will be appreciated. To the number one question. 1)How many other dependent children does your father have? If there are other children, the VO would not expect him to empty his account for one child (even if it can be done), the VO would look at the number of dependents too. 2) 15,000dollars is just the school fees and one has not added living expenses of another 10,000-15,000dollars for a year. If you do your conversion yourself, you would see that the 5,000,000naira is not relatively enough. 3)Does he have any form of funding? I think if he can get a co-sponsor for him it'll be better. A co-sponsor that has a good balance in his statement of account and good inflow(to avoid case of lodgement). Applying with one sponsor with that balance to me is very risky. Again you intend to apply with that statement too. If you both intend to use that statement then you should both use different co-sponsors to be on the safer side. Other members can add to this and criticize any incorrect statement I may have made. Just advising based on what I believe I know. #MytwoCents |

@michV @thesoj @yemdogg @Genius000 @justwise @QuantumMove01 @iamlimitless @CannyZionist @Eraytee and any others with knowledge on this, your inputs will be appreciated. Let me first answer number two question before I answer number 1. If you get funding for your MSc program, it actually is a plus to your application. But it is imperative you provide a sponsor's statement of account if you are not sponsoring yourself. Most funding are dependent on the students satisfactory performance in their graduate programs and the VO's know this. I read in many pages back where people with funding applied with very little money in their sponsor's account and got their TRV. But they still had to provide their sponsor statement of account. My two cents: even if you having funding, try as much as possible not to make it look to the VO that the funding is your only hope of survival, make it look like yes you have funding from school and funding from home too. The question on embassy knowing you are brothers based on using same statement of account, hmm someone should help with that question. #mytwocents |

uso84: Thank you 4 all ur contributions on this thread. Pls with a Bsc marketing (4.40) n a diploma / prof certificate in HR (CIPM), can TRV favour me if am going 4 masters in HR? There is progression in your study. Marketing is in line with HR and you also have a diploma/professional certificate in HR. So going for Masters in HR would and should favour you. It should not raise a red flag. You might also need to construct a very good SOP just to cement your points and also tackle the funding part with other supporting documents of your application well and by God's Grace you should be good to go. Again I believe your academic progression is in order. Just try and look for any other possible loop hole to mend and cover up. Have you gotten an admission yet? A 4.40CGPA is very good in applying for Masters admission. Other members can say something about this too. #MyTwoCents |

Austinpee4: I also agree with you bro regarding the instance you pointed out but CONTEXTUALLY and regarding this situation, it really isn't. I'm only staying within the confines of the subject matter and besides, a VO may think otherwise but based on past 'GCMS' file inferential analysis, Most VO usually don't see bsc to bsc as academic progression but sometimes consider an applicant on compelling reasons for a switch.
This is also not just for both of us but also to guide folks that are considering opting for same to choose rightly as it usually tends to a reg flag under 'purpose of visit' when there are no substantiable reasons. Nice write up from you all. You are correct in the sense that the VO might see BSc in agriculture to BSc nursing as no progression in academics and hence the issue of "purpose of visit". In fact the VO might not need to look deep to raise the red flag that the student might not be genuine. But if there is anyway she can substantially point out with the reason for this rapid switch. Maybe a work environment (op knows better) that had triggered her love for this field and her inability to grow in her new found field without a degree and being a professional, she just might scale through. Some pages back thesoj helped a guy with a BSc package his docs and get TRV with a diploma admission. That should have been a "purpose of visit" red flag but the meticulous nature of arranging the documents helped the applicant scale. I read the post and saw every detail in the SOP was backed with a proof. But yet again it is a risky part to thread on without enough proof to back your SOP on the switch. Anything is possible with GOD and it is still worth giving a shot. #MytwoCents |

Eraytee: I wont say yes or no cox anything can happen, the only thing i see here is that you putting the app at a risk of 80% rejection -20% approval. i would advise you get an admission in your previous field pgc/pgd/m.sc and use that to apply for TRV, when ur approval coms thru its easier to swing btw courses of choice. for now getting d TRV approved is key. use the admission to apply for TRV and change to ur desire course nursing when you get to Cana. That is why in my last post I asked the op if him/her has worked in the medical line since completing BSc. If not, it might be difficult to prove to the VO the sudden change of field and then there comes the issue of "purpose of visit". |

yorex2011: When contacting potential supervisors, is it good to attach transcripts and cvs in the first mail, cos i read somewhere that first mail should be brief and without attachments I stand to be corrected on this by other members of this thread but I believe it is imperative you attach those important docs (transcript, cv and possibly statement of result and publication) Yes the email should be brief, precise but should also be detailed (that is why no space for informal greetings) If the supervisor is interested in you after reading the email then how does he assess your academic prowess without your transcript? I believe those docs can be attached in the first email. However there is no stringent rule for obtaining a supervisor, we can only advice based on our personal experience and that of other people. Just put in your best, rejections might come but never give up. All the best. "Open to other members for their two cent support or constructive criticism". |

Megziflips: I'd like to get an opinion on how feasible chances are that one can get an admission to a research based masters program (especially in Computer Science/Engineering).
I've tried contacting a few professors to no relevant avail.
I've come to the understanding that unless you have a real concrete research proposal, efforts to directly contact potential supervisors will most likely be futile.
Has there been anyone in the forum who was successful in MSc. application without contacting a potential supervisor prior to applying (particularly in comp sci/eng)?
@michV @thesoj @yemdogg @Genius000 @QuantumMove01 your inputs will be appreciated. The truth is when applying for MSc program without a supervisor, chances of getting the admission is low but with a potential supervisor there is 90% chance of getting admitted into your desired program. Although I do not know personally anyone who has secured a supervisor in comp. sci/Engr. I know a number of people have been successful in obtaining supervisors for their program. Indeed if you have a research proposal which is in line with any faculty member research work, it can help but it is not a mandatory requirement to get a supervisor. My two cents, 1)Go through any of the school's faculty listing and study their research work. Compose a detailed, but brief and precise (forget informality and be formal) SOP and send to their email and follow up with a call. Many of them read the emails and don't reply but the call gives you platform to pitch your potentials. 2) You can settle down and come up with a brilliant research proposal and send to a faculty member whose research interest is in LINE with your research proposal and follow with a call. NB:Always attach your transcript, statement of result/certificate and cv when sending emails most especially your transcript as it enables the faculty member to see your strength and weakness in the various courses and how you progressed academically. Other members of the thread can add to this and there is a link on how to secure a supervisor on this thread thesoj posted recently. |

Austinpee4: Baba, you have a very valid submission here and it's always common to see schools tell applicants about realities of each program. On the other hand, @Megziflips also have a point when he pointed that "It will be more difficult but very possible" which i know you agree too.
But also in canada, it's possible to do a PHD after an Meng program though it's often time rare depending on the circumstance. Assuming an Meng graduate did brilliantly in the Masters classes and have published papers from work, project at a company or at a government institution,a professor in that area may likely pick interest in him.
A PhD is a Job while at the same time study and part of that job is doing the leading edge research work in that field and prior activities will show these traits even with an Meng degree.
The professor of whom you worked with during your Meng program, may have her/his Career hinging on the quality of your work or further work and certainly the professor's future funding will depend upon your brilliant research work. At this point, an academic advancement will be offered as well.
Since the individual did not do a Masters thesis, it will come down to the projects you have worked on either at a commercial company, working at government institutions or even your projects during the Meng prog.
By and large, this is typical with an exceptional graduate student and will have outstanding reference and recommendations from the professors.
N/B.. I have a friend in canada who was offered this opportunity. I'm sharing his experience. Nice write-up. Not seen anyone that proceeded to PhD with MEng but your write-up explains the possibility and difficulty together. |

Praise be to God. I woke up to a new mail from cic. My childs passport has been requested. It has been a long journey and a long wait.
For all mother's in the house if you intend going with your child please apply together with your child. It saves you from terrible tension, and depression. Your husband is still your tie to your home country. There is no joy getting yours first and having your child's own denied after. It is emotionally and psychologically draining.
I applied for mine first and my application was approved(online)
Then I applied for my 4 year old child to accompany me and his was denied.it took only 5 days for cic to make the decision (online) Reason- purpose of visit, ties to home country I was terribly heartbroken. I could not imagine travelling without him. So I decided to reapply (online), but this time around my husband wrote a statement of purpose too for the application and we tried our possible best to use my husband as proof of ties and we made sure to outline all the proof we had in our sop.
This second application passed the processing time (I had to send an enquiry email to them) and I have had to defer my admission to May because of it.
Here is the list of documents submitted.(these are the same documents I submitted during the first application the only two different things we did are that
1. We decided to list out all the documents we used as our proofs in our statement of purpose, we outlined them properly and thank you to this forum, that is where I found that format of writing the sop 2. My husband also wrote a different statement of purpose
Application for visiting visa made outside canada My child's birth certificate My child's passport My marraige certificate My passport data page My passport page with my canada visa(put in the place where his letter of invitation is required) My study permit aproval paper(put in the place where his letter of invitaion is required) My husband's passport data page My husband's letter of employment My Cv (I am currently a small scale agricultural entrepreneur(not yet registered), so the only thing which I have and included was my cv.) Title deed of Two properties in my husband name(a commercialized house and land) Agreement of lease between my husband and his tenant Title deed of a third property (our residential house) held in Trust for my child and so my child's name is appearing on the title deed My car paper My husband's bank statement My bank statement My husband and I are his sponsors My sop (The same one I used when applying for my own but with addition of My child accompanying me) and explaing WHO WOULD LOOK AFTER THE CHILD WHILE I STUDY. I tried to tackle that by mentioning that my classes are during the day which is same as my childs day care classes. My husband's sop (explaining who he is,what he does, his hope and dream for me, his relationship to us, his expectations, how much he is sponsoring our child with, re assuring that all preparations have been made for the child to be looked after by the daycare while his mum studies with pròof of finance to cater for this and finally professing his undying love for us and how he expects us back)
I did not do upfront medical initially because I was hoping a medical request by cic would let us know if he was going to be approved or not but When I saw his application process was taking too long (I was trying to meet up with school resumption date) I decided to try to beat the time when they would request for medical and the 5 days it would take to upload the result, so in the middle of his application processing I did upfront medical for him. I never notified cic about that, It just changed to passed in his account about 10 days later. 8 days ago I got a request for his father's authorization letter (using the cic format) for the child to travel with me which I uploaded in his account the next day. Today I got his passport request.
I want to thank everyone on this forum who actually take out their time to answer questions and share their experience. I hope sharing mine would also help other mothers who intend applying for their kids. Congrats |

thesoj: I suggest you discontinue using your agent, because his advice is patently and glaringly incorrect. While your CGPA is very low, some Canadian masters programs admit students with a 2:2, but you will need to do all the necessary legwork to see which architecture graduate programs do so. Email the admissions coordinators (and/or professors in research or practice areas that you are passionate about) of as many architecture grad programs as you can to find out. I suggest you not use an agent; do all the investigation yourself. All the information is on the internet. Start with Google, and view my next post. I agree with you thesoj I don't know why someone will say with TOEFL or even IELTS, your cgpa in your course of study no longer matters. The school will require the transcript to go through every course taken and some schools also convert it to their system. He should just do the required homework by searching the Internet. No harm in trying. Never know when opportunity can come knocking. |

And i could read this on the school's website that official transcript has to be submitted before admission offer will be made. Do you advice me to send my official transcript to them when admission decision is yet to be made. Thanks, ur reply will be highly appreciated If the school will make an admission decision with the unofficial transcripts, the you should wait but if the official transcript is a compulsory requirement for an admission decision to be made, then it is mandatory you satisfy the compulsory requirement. It depends on the school conditions for admission. |
