In some parts of the world, people see a pot belly (a.k.a beer belly) as a sign of wealth. Others assume that it develops as we get older (which may be partly true). Some people think that the pot belly is caused directly by drinking beer. Well, the truth is that it’s actually a bit more complicated than most people think. A pot belly is caused by fat being deposited inside the abdomen. This can occur just under the skin (which is apparently less harmful from a health perspective) or it can be deposited deep inside the belly, surrounding the major abdominal organs including the intestines (this is the more dangerous belly fat). So beer directly doesn’t cause it, if you don’t know it already, beer does contain a lot of calories, so it certainly contributes to it.

Medical emergencies can happen anywhere. At home, at work, in church etc. There are many causes of unresponsiveness including cardiac (heart) arrest – when the heart stops working. Cardiac arrest is a major cause of death in many parts of the world. It is estimated that sudden cardiac death will increase in parts of the developing world. Unfortunately, in many parts of Africa, there are no reliable data on the rates and causes of sudden cardiac death. One thing I can tell you for sure is when this happens, if timely intervention is not performed, there can be loss of life. Basic life support is care that can be provided by ANYBODY to people who are unresponsive from a cardiac arrest.
