The rate at which young Nigerians buy high-end luxury cars has risen rapidly over the past few years. It has become commonplace in Nigeria to see young folks who own very expensive automobiles. These posh cars that previously used to be a once in a while sight, are now everywhere on the streets of the major cities that they are described to be as common as water. I took out time to follow this fact and I found out that entertainers and celebrities are not the only ones that live the flamboyant lifestyle in Nigeria. Cars like Mercedes Benz, Porsche, Range Rover etc. have become very mediocre, commonly driven by young individuals including those less than 30 years which me wonder the type of “exclusive” business opportunities they are privy too because I know working in a bank or teaching will not afford you these cars........... Full article here here Arsenal in Freefall? Freefall is the downward movement of a body under the force of gravity. It is also a rapid decline in value or prestige. Let's start by taking a step back and taking a deep breath at the same time. Something that once appeared impossible, actually happened today. I woke up to the news that Mr. Wenger would be leaving Arsenal at the end of the season. Are you kidding me? The great, once beloved Arsene would be leaving the Gunners. I am not an Arsenal fan, not even close. Don't get it twisted, my allegiance lies with Manchester United who not too long ago went through (some would argue are still going through) something similar with the "graceful" departure of Sir Alex Ferguson. However, I have a lot of Arsenal fans as close friends who over the past few years appeared to be oblivious to the fact that a catharsis was needed in London. It is true that the doors seemed to be closing on good old Arsene these past few weeks, but his recent string of wins appeared to at least transiently brainwash the Arsenal fans that I know, with one of them saying that "Wenger should be kept another season to groom this crop of young talent". As a non-Arsenal fan, I must admit that their style of play and conviction in the recent weeks was surprising in a good way. I have always been a Lacazzette fan, so getting to see him play more, particularly along with Aubameyang was a combination that I felt would yield dividend in the short term if the two were able to mesh successfully with Ozil and Mkhitaryan. It thus came as a shock to hear today that Arsene would be let go at the end of the season. I asked myself, these Arsenal executives were so reluctant to fire Arsene for years despite the yearning of the supporters, and now that they have a shot at the Europa cup which would guarantee them participation in next season's UEFA Champions League, these brilliant executives chose this time to fire him. He had made it clear that the Europa league cup was the goal for the rest of the season, and I could feel the momentum slowly build up among the Arsenal players. I don't live in London, so I don't know what transpired that led to this happening today, but I do live in the social media era where news travels fast. To me, the timing of this firing could not be any worse. I am not a businessman and do not have any football management experience. I may also be too assuming to surmise that any chances of winning the Europa cup have been blasted to smithereens. Why couldn't they wait a few more weeks until he lost the semi-final or the final? Or even better, after he won the trophy (cough, cough) so that he could ride into the sunset in a blaze of glory. Wouldn't that be a win-win for all? There is no way that this news will not impact the dynamics and mindset of the locker room which will translate to their performance on the field. Or am I underestimating the resilience of these football superstars? Rumors are already swirling about who the next coach will be. Some say, Patrick Viera, hmm. These are unneeded distractions for a football player, and to the guy (me) who has never played a professional soccer game in his life, I see it as the start of a freefall. How long will they freefall for? I don't know, but the Arsenal executives will need to tactfully steer their ship with steady hands. Did anyone say terminal velocity? My Arsenal friends may disagree with me and I am curious to hear their thoughts about their imminent freefall. Arsene had to go, it was long overdue, but this could have waited a few more weeks. At the start of the season, I had placed a bet with three Arsenal fans that Burnley would finish ahead of Arsenal. I had previously given up on this, but maybe I should resurrect this wager with all the impending drama of Arsene's exit from this famed football club. I may actually make money on Arsenal. Did anyone say windfall? Read similar post here Become a contributor/blogger contact: editor@qwenu.com |
Yesterday evening was the first time some people saw a major Hollywood movie in a Saudi cinema. The event was by invitation only and apparently was well-received. Today, the rest of the country will be able to buy tickets for viewing which will start on Friday. It is reported that every movie to be shown in the country will be screened by the government before release. Of note, a kiss scene at the end of the Black Panther movie was removed from this premiere. Read here |

Foxnews.com is reporting that a Christian numerologist, David Meade informed a U.K. paper that on April 23 the sun and moon will be in Virgo and some other stuff will align etc. Numerology is any belief in the divine or mystical relationship between a number and one or more coinciding events. It is also the study of the numerical value of the letters in words, names, and ideas. It is often associated with the paranormal, alongside astrology and similar divinatory arts. Apparently this guy is a controversial guy so take anything with a grain of salt. Read more here |
Everyone wants to be well groomed. The average African man gets a haircut at least once a month. Many do so once a week. In most African cities, there’s at least one barber’s shop on every street. Some barber’s shops are indoors while others are out on the street. Most barbers learn on the job via an apprenticeship. In some parts of the world, barbering schools actually exist and you could get a cheap haircut if you go to one. There is an increasing concern that barbering procedures could increase the risk of transmitting infectious diseases such as HIV and hepatitis. However, little is known about barbers’ practices in Africa with respect to infection prevention. Before you read on, why don’t you try to answer these questions about your own barber? Beer is a staple alcoholic drink in most of the world, and in most parts of Africa, beer is probably consumed more than wines and spirits. In Nigeria, popular brands of beer such as Star, Gulder, Harp can be seen decorating tables of many nightspots next to the roasted fish, suya or pepper soup. Beer is commonly served at any social gathering be it wedding ceremonies or birthday parties. You cannot get people together without serving beer. It is ironical that in many parts of the world alcohol cannot be drunk out in the open (i.e. has to be covered), in many African countries you will see people drinking out in the open at almost any time of the day. In addition, sending children to buy your alcoholic beverage is not seen as a wrong in some parts of Africa compared to many countries in the west where you have to be of legal age (verified by presenting your identity card) to even buy the drink in the liquor store. How Do You Know If You Are Drinking Too Much...................... Read the full post here www.qwenu.com |
Do you have a facebook account? Then you should probably read this as it probably impacts you. Reports of a shooting at Youtube today were indeed surprising to hear. If you have ever driven down the 1-280, you see the beautiful backdrop of nature in Northern California. Depending on the season, the grass is brown in the summer and green in the winter and spring. San Bruno happens to be about 20 minutes from where I live in San Francisco. For anyone who has been to Silicon Valley, it is very tranquil and beautiful so I was very shocked to hear that there was a shooting at the YouTube building in San Bruno. Most of Silicon Valley is full of young start up companies with a diverse population of people from all over the world. So gun violence is not a very common occurence and infact Silicon Valley prides itself as being a very safe area. Sources have alleged that the shooter is Nasim Aghdam, a woman in her 30s. She is reported to have shot and injured at least 3 people before taking her own life. More details will be available in the morning. Photos and Video of Evacuation here |

Why do men go bald? Balding is said to occur when you lose hair. In men, this is very common and may affect up to 50% of adults. The ones who are not affected often consider themselves lucky. However, hope is not lost for those who have lost their full head of hair (pun intended). First, where does hair come from? Hair follicles are the sites in the skin where hair arises. It is interesting to know that humans have all their hair follicles complete at birth. That is why sometimes when you see newborns that have full hair at birth. Balding can occur in the front, in the crown (center, or as we used to call it in primary school, the ogo area) or if you are double unlucky, you can have both. The exact cause is thought to be from genetics and hormones that your body make including testosterone. If your father is/was bald, there is a very good chance that you will be bald too. Why My Son May Never Become A Professional Football Player? Thoughts of A Naija Dad Living in the U.S Please, pardon the title of my post. It is an exaggeration and I know it. I know that anyone’s chances of going professional are extremely low. However, don’t I have a right to dream? To dream that my kids will have a chance to make it to the English Premier League one day, or at least to Major League Soccer (MLS). I was born and raised in “lere”, Lagos (Aguda, to be precise) but now live permanently in Arizona, United States. America is a nice place to live but lacks some of the fundamental opportunities for my son to develop his football talent. And with every passing day, I see that dream drifting further away. Let me explain. You see, in the United States, the only way you can become a football (what they call soccer here) player is by paying to play. This means that you have to pay to join a club as a child and while in the club demonstrate how good you are to the coaches, some that coach for a living. But before I go too far, allow me to tell you how it all started. You see, I learnt to play football by kicking the ball around bare feet on the streets of Lagos. After school, those days, I would go home to watch “Voltron-Defender of the Universe”. Once this was done, I would run out to join Femi, Tayo, Tegbe and my other friends on our street and we would play football till it got dark then go home for dinner. Somedays, we wouldn’t play because my lesson-teacher would be home to teach Maths. Unfortunately, the U.S. is very different from Nigeria in terms of football culture. Most kids in the U.S. who play football start between the ages of 4 and 9 years. If you start later than 10 years, you are literally behind the ball and unlikely to develop the technical ability required to become a decent player. My son started when he was 4. We registered him for what they call recreational football, aka “rec”. Rec football typically starts at age 4, however, some parents wait until ages 5-6 before enrolling their kids, and it usually played on Saturday mornings. Read more here Qwenu WWW.QWENU.COM
