Effects of covid-19, federal judge on Tuesday ruled that New York must pay unemployment benefits to Uber and Lyft drivers.
It was recorded that on Tuesday district Judge LaShann DeArcy Hall ordered the New York Department of Labor to clear the backlog of unemployment payments owed to drivers for the ridesharing services within 45 days, in response to a lawsuit filed against the state by drivers and the New York Taxi Workers Alliance advocacy gThe lawsuit states that the state failed to require Uber and Lyft to submit data on driver earnings that would allow the state to process unemployment benefits.
In her ruling, Hall said the state's failure to do so created "an avoidable and inexcusable delay in the payment of unemployment insurance" as drivers do not have earnings on file related to their work for the ridesharing service.

Corona virus has caused Alabama city as long time Alabama mayor has died of COVID-19 as cases of the virus have risen in the state.
Billy Joe Driver, who was elected as mayor of Clanton in 1984, was admitted to the hospital on June 28, where he passed away on Thursday, reports said. He was 84 and indeed an icon in Alabama.

PANAMA CITY indeed is a reputable and lawful city -US prosecutors have charged two sons of former Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli in connection with bribery and money laundering linked to Brazilian construction firm Odebrecht, according to a federal complaint unsealed on Monday.
Luis Enrique Martinelli, 38, and Ricardo Alberto Martinelli, 40, were arrested earlier in the day in Guatemala City as they attempted to board a flight to Panama, and face extradition to the United States, Guatemala’s police said in a statement.
A Martinelli family spokesman did not immediately reply to a request for comment on the charges.
But the family said in a statement following the arrest that it was working to ensure the sons have legal assistance in Guatemala and are able to transfer the proceedings to Panama.
Odebrecht has been at the center of a far-reaching Latin American corruption scandal uncovered in 2014, in which the company paid more than $700 million in bribes to government officials in various countries.

Regeneron Drug maker announced plans Monday to begin Phase 3 clinical trials of a "double antibody cocktail" for use as a possible treatment for COVID-19.
The Phase 3 trial, the last stage of evaluation in the drug approval process, will assess the ability of the cocktail, called REGN-COV2, to prevent infection among uninfected people who have had "close exposure" to someone with COVID-19, company officials said.COVID-19 is the disease caused by the new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2.
"We are running simultaneous adaptive trials in order to move as quickly as possible to provide a potential solution to prevent and treat COVID-19 infections, even in the midst of an ongoing global pandemic," Dr. George D. A bullet pierced the windshield of a marked NYPD vehicle in the Bronx Saturday night as two officers sat inside — but neither was struck, according to a police spokesman.
The shot rang off a few minutes before midnight outside of the 40th Precinct on Alexander Avenue in Mott Haven, police said.
The bullet traveled through the windshield and lodged in the divider between the back seats.
Shattered glass had hit one of the cops in the face, causing a minor cut, police said.
Dozens of cops were posted outside of the precinct following the shooting.
It was not immediately clear if it was a stray bullet or if the police were intentionally targeted.

NASA slated to explore Jupiter’s moon Europa sometime in the next decade, researchers are increasingly confident that the ocean on the celestial satellite “could be habitable.”
Speaking at the 2020 Goldschmidt Conference earlier this month, NASA researchers said they have developed a model that shows Europa, the sixth largest moon in the Solar System, could support life.
“We were able to model the composition and physical properties of the core, silicate layer, and ocean,” NASA JPL researcher and the study’s lead author, Mohit Melwani Daswani, said in a statement. “We find that different minerals lose water and volatiles at different depths and temperatures. We added up these volatiles that are estimated to have been lost from the interior, and found that they are consistent with the current ocean’s predicted mass, meaning that they are probably present in the ocean.”
The research can be read here, but it has not yet been peer-reviewed.
The ocean is under a dense layer of frozen crust that is largely believed to be at least six and as many as 19 miles thick. The surface temperature on Europa is exceptionally cold as well, approximately -260 degrees Fahrenheit at the equator and -370 degrees Fahrenheit at the poles, according to Space.com.

The building at the corner of Court and Union streets in Carroll Gardens came crashing down at around 4:30 p.m. in the tony neighborhood. A three-story Brooklyn building housing a gym collapsed Wednesday afternoon, leaving one person injured and a massive pile of rubble and debris strewn on the street.
Officials said that the building – home to Body Elite Gym for the past 36 years – was vacant at the time of the collapse.
But the man who was injured was inside the building’s second-floor and was able to escape with minor injuries, FDNY officials said.
He was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, sources said.
The NYPD was seen using K9 units to search the wreckage in the immediate aftermath of the collapse.
FDNY and Department of Buildings crews will be sifting through the rubble overnight in search of any other potential victims, FDNY Fire Operations Chief Thomas Richardson said at a Wednesday night press briefing.
Carroll Gardens resident Vincenza Rizzuto, 35, who was nearby at a traffic light on Carroll and Court streets, said she heard the collapse.

Mark Zuckerberg is stepping up his efforts to stop the bleeding from Facebook’s advertiser boycott.
The social network’s 36-year-old founder and chief executive will meet with the civil rights figures spearheading the push to get advertisers to jump ship from Facebook, the company said.
Zuckerberg’s planned meeting comes after company executives Carolyn Everson, Facebook’s Vice President of global business solutions; and Neil Potts, the site’s public policy director, held at least two meetings with advertisers Tuesday on the eve of the high-profile one-month boycott, according to Reuters.
Everson and Potts offered no new details on how Facebook would fight hate speech, however, and left advertisers frustrated by repeatedly referring to recent press releases where they touted that Facebook catches 90 percent of all hate speech on its platform before it is ever reported.
Zuckerberg agreed to a meeting after it was requested by the organizers of the “Stop Hate For Profit” boycott.
“They asked about having Mark at the meeting, and we’ve since confirmed that Mark is able to join,” the company told CNN Business in a statement. “We’re waiting to hear back and look forward to the opportunity to continue the dialogue.”

Bloody Saturday in New York City left two people dead and 19 more hurt in at least a dozen shootings over a span of 14 hours, police said.
Between 11 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday, police recorded 12 shootings across four boroughs, part of a disturbing climb in gunfire over the past several weeks to levels not seen since the 1990s.
A man and a woman were shot dead near Livonia and Van Siclen Avenues Saturday afternoon apparently by a gunman in a trench coat and blonde wig the latest victims of the troubling trend.
The bloodshed began late Friday, when one person was shot in the head near East 167th Street and Boston Road around 11 p.m. Friday in the Bronx, police said. The victim, 20, was taken to Lincoln Hospital in critical condition.

From the covid-19 test conducted, Fourteen people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Westchester County a cluster likely sparked after two families traveled to Florida then attended a graduation ceremony in the suburban New York county, officials said Monday.
The infected people in the cluster visited the Sunshine State — a current hotbed of the coronavirus — then attended a drive-thru graduation ceremony at the Chappaqua train station for Horace Greeley High School on June 20.
Thirteen people who attended the ceremony have tested positive for the virus, Westchester County Executive George Latimer said.
A student who is infected also went to a “field night” event later that night, ABC 7 reported. The event, which was not sanctioned by the school, was attended by juniors and seniors from several high schools in the county.
“Of the 14 that are positive, these people are all inter-related by where they were or by personal association, but that’s what constitutes a cluster,” the county’s health commissioner, Dr. Sherlita Amler said Monday.
All of the people infected are self-isolating for 14 days to checkmate their health status.

American Airlines said Friday it will start filling its flight to capacity starting July 1 but will allow passengers to move to open seats if they are available at no extra cost.
Since the coronavirus pandemic covid-19, American had blocked off 50 percent of the middle seats in the main cabin. Other airlines, like Delta Air Lines, Jet Blue, air peace and Southwest Airlines, have been blocking all middle seats.
"As more people continue to travel, customers may notice that flights are booked to capacity starting July 1," American said in a statement. "American will continue to notify customers and allow them to move to more open flights when available, all without incurring any cost. This is in addition to the airline's current travel waivers.

Deputies have arrested the woman accused of torching the Atlanta Wendy’s where Rayshard Brooks was gunned down by police.
Natalie White, 29, was apprehended Tuesday in connection to the arson that burned down the fast-food chain’s location during protests on Saturday, June 13, a day after Brooks was killed in its parking lot, according to the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office.
Brooks had referred to White as his “girlfriend” during the June 12 traffic stop that ultimately led to his death, body cam footage shows. White’s lawyer on Tuesday confirmed the two were “close friends” but declined to comment further on their relationship.
A warrant was issued for White on Saturday, about a week after she allegedly set the blaze. Atlanta’s fire department said it was difficult for its crews to fight the fire because they were met by demonstrators blocking their path, according to the local NBC affiliate.

Long a divisive issue in the United States, capital punishment is now considered morally unacceptable to a record share of Americans, a new survey showed Tuesday.
Gallup said its poll found just 54 percent of U.S. adults said the death penalty is morally acceptable, a decline of 6 percent from last year and 4 points lower than the previous all-time low.
The annual Values and Beliefs survey found that 40 percent of respondents said the death penalty is morally wrong, the highest rating since Gallup began asking the question in 2001. Last year's survey also showed a record-high number of those who favor life sentences over executions.
Politically, the death penalty was deemed acceptable by 37 percent of liberals, a drop from 50 percent in 2018 and 67 percent of conservatives, a decline of 4 points. Fifty-six percent of moderates find the punishment morally sound.
"[U.S. adults'] opinions of the death penalty, which have shown many shifts over the past 80 years, continue to evolve," Gallup wrote in acknowledging the trend last fall. "When given an explicit alternative, for the first time in at least 30 years, more say life imprisonment with no possibility of parole is a better punishment for murder than the death penalty."

People with asthma can breathe a little easier: New research suggests the condition does not increase your risk of hospitalization due to COVID-19.
A review of records from 15 hospitals affiliated with Northwestern Medicine turned up more than 1,500 patients with COVID-19. Of these, 14 percent had asthma which was misunderstood to be corona virus.
Using models that accounted for age, sex and ethnicity while adjusting for asthma risk factors such as smoking and obesity, the investigators found no meaningful difference in odds of hospitalization between people with and without asthma.
Nor did use of asthma medications -- such as inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting beta-agonists -- increase hospitalization risk. Finally, the researchers found that asthma didn't lead to more deaths from COVID-19.

Brazil has now recorded 54,000 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases in the country to more than 1 million Saturday.

It was reported by the Brazil’s Health Ministry that, 54,000 cases was in part due to a lag in three states’ reporting.
Apparently, Brazil’s government removed data on COVID-19 cases and deaths from the Health Ministry’s website over allegations that the numbers were inflated to secure more federal funds. A Supreme Court justice later ordered the government to stop hiding the data, so the website now shows the numbers.

Cases have surged in Brazil and across Latin America recently, leading the World Health Organization to consider Latin America as the new epicenter of the pandemic.

According to the Johns Hopkins University global tracker, Brazil has had 48,954 deaths from COVID-19.
