Saltburn......9.5/10

It's a pretty dark movie. Some comedy was thrown in. An erotic thriller of some sort with some fine bit of sexual depravity sprinkled in. Chronicles the lengths an opportunistic gold-digger would go to set his future up in riches. Pretty wild how the ending went. Not so surprised as I guessed it but shĆÆt was still brutal, gritty, dark and shocking still. Quite a fvvking effect.

Might be offensive if not overly for peeps with a lower tolerance for the LGTV community for of course it's filled with homoerotiƧ themes or undertones.
But I won't deny it's a darn good movie towing the fine line between edgy and offensive. So it surely has controversial themes. And of course the most pressing annoyance being a film that might come off as "painting the rich and opulent in bad light".

Barry Keoghan, what can I say? I always doubted the guy and thought he was overrated especially with last year's Oscars nomination. But my God, was I wrong? Barry shocked me on this and I didn't knew he had it in him. This is definitely deserved of a Best Actor nomination. Damn, bro. Gotta give it to this guy. He killed his role. Barry put on a mighty show. I ain't slandering this guy henceforth.

And Fennel got her entire cast right. They all put in a mighty darn good performance. Especially Jacob Elordi who I ain't surprised by his talent or craft. He's good and I've wanted his rise in the industry and it seems 2023 was a mighty fruitful year for him. Rosamund Pike is sure to deliver memorable performance as always. The few times Richard Grant and Carey Mulligan was onscreen they delivered. Archie Madekwe was also a scene stealer. Because of this, I'll just try and see his film "Gran Turismo". Holds so much promise.

Very good cinematography and top tier music score which drives each scene with to give you the perfect emotion. Well written, well paced. Seemed as if it ain't sure or going nowhere at the middle but the third act was a huge pay off.

This movie also goes on as a strong competitor for Best Original Screenplay if it manages not to nick Best Picture noms. Screenplay is also a strong point for Fennel.

Always knew I was gonna enjoy this movie just from five trailer alone and the assurance from a film written and directed by Emerald Fennel. It's definitely the best movie I've seen this year and a great way to open my film watching this year.

Many have said it's very similar to "The Talented Mr Ripley" and I'm definitely downloading this movie tonight just to compare and contrast how big of an inspiration and how good or novel Emerald Fennel did with her work.

Just what I thought when I saw the film yesternight.

Infact, it's this movie that will make me go see The Talented Mr Ripley.

Fair enough.

I'm curious though, Gerrard59's intelligent posts are way more direct than mine - on this issue, and more broadly on migration topics. Have you delivered this same advice to him, or you haven't noticed/ don't mind as you're friendly with him?

Have you said the same to Treadway who also delivers on point but very direct, sometimes even harsh, to work on his tone and be more empathetic/softer?

I agree with you but Gerrard59 and Treadway don't comment on this thread as often as you do, they only chip in once in a while same as another fella named heroshark whom I would say is very more direct and logical so it makes sense for them not to be called out.

You can see that they have not commented since the last one or two comments they have made on the issue. However, you've gone on and on to reply every post in a way that would seem as if you're trying to discredit people's feelings and concerns.

I'm also sure if you follow the post trail of Gerrard59 and Treadway on other sections of Nairaland, you will see where they have been calles out too. I've also had one or two run ins with them myself in the past.

Don't get me wrong, your posts contain some hard, undisputable facts which I myself have benefited from. It's your delivery and timing you might want to look at (that's if you give a flying Bleep. smiley )

The main issue people are having with your comment which you seems not to grab is the timing of your arguments. It should come later when it is all calm and not at the moment when POC are living in fear being harmed or maimed.

If your family were in the position of harm during this riot, I believe you wouldnā€™t come here defending why they were being attacked.

An important aspect of emotional intelligence is timing.

In addition, she could also work on the tone of her message.

It's not all about what is being said but also "how" it is being said. She is right on her stances but delivery is so out of touch given the audience on this thread.

Pass your message across but sprinkle it with doses of empathy. No be everytime, logic logic logic or trying to make a point.

Logic delivered in the wrong manner can be vehemently rejected. Know your audience!

My two cents!

Your whole argument has been ā€œI donā€™t support the violence,ā€ BUT abc. That, BUT is the problem, especially as this platform is filled with black Africans. If you want to speak from both sides of the mouth, perhaps go to Reddit, where you'll have the "balanced" audience that you are looking for.

I just mentioned the white assailant chasing a Muslim couple with a chainsaw, and now youā€™ve come with the same "whatsaboutism" of white people also getting attacked as if they are the main target (the same thing Claremont accused you of doing, so now I hope you see the trend).

Besides, no one is asking you to join the force or go out for an anti-protest, so donā€™t try to play the victim card; everyone expects you to understand their fear and how mentality exhausting it is as opposed to sitting comfortably in the middle with your stomach facing the assailants.

Missjekyll mentioned that they tried to burn down a hotel, and you said she shouldnā€™t spread fake news. Based on your logic with the fire, they were probably trying to roast corn and not burn the hotel to the ground.

Traffic was being organised based on skin colour, with white people getting access and black and brown people being told they couldnā€™t go through. If you donā€™t see the problem with your logic and what is actually happening then I have nothing else to say to you.

Abeg try stay safe and donā€™t go out to these areas where they are rioting, because remember that you are also dark skinned (according to your posts) before they see you as meat to attack, as you wonā€™t be holding your Nairaland post of defence on your chest for them to see.

Oh for sure - that's correct but it's whataboutism and not relevant to my point in this specific context.

I'm not saying Farage and co are right or wrong for not speaking about it. Na dem get their mouth, and I know they'll act according to their goal of reversing immigration. I have no qualms with them excercising their right to pursue that democratically.

The fact is that their actions and utterances are posing a direct threat to me and people like me solely on the basis of how we look, and I'm pointing that out to people here because people had previously sympathized with them on the basis of alignment with some other goals of theirs. To paraphrase missjekyll, I'm reminding the turkeys what Christmas looks like.

That's why I phrased it as food for thought. For one, the distinction that people like to draw between legal and 'illegal' (not really, per the letter of the law) immigrants is clearly nonexistent in the eyes of the far right (I define this by willingness to utilise or encourage violence). Random people have been attacked and have had their shops looted and property destroyed without any attempt to verify their immigration status.

The person who murdered those children is not even muslim, yet, the thugs on the streets have been targeting mosques.

Whether it's due to underlying grievances or not is an academic question from my perspective as someone worrying about my wife heading to work and back tomorrow, solely because I know that as a visibly African woman, she could be the target of violence without any attempt by the thugs to verify her immigration status (legal), role (highly qualified skilled worker), religion (Christian), contributions to the country (very high), benefits taken from them (zero) and all the other things that they're saying are the cause of their rioting.

Hope you understand now.

Tensazangetsu20, remember the conversation we had this evening?

Here is another Nairalander echoing the same thought.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter if you're legal, collect zero benefits or contribute to the economy by paying your taxes. What will matter is how you look.

When shit hits the fan, no one will care to see your ID card if you're legal or not.

Personally think this sequel is a bad idea.

Only thing making it worthwhile on the big screen is the presence of Denzel: if he's in this film, then the script has probably got something going.

This Jarus' controversy has made me realize how Nigerians are ignorant the way their country works: especially for those who wanted/believed anything to come out of this case.

It shows people that are out of touch with reality.

Little wonder we keep making bad decisions with regards to our leaders.

My guiding motto: see things for how it is rather than how you want it to be.

A lot of women plan to get married, a lot of men stumble upon marriage. Most men are married to women they planned to just sleep with. They got in and could not come out.

Women in their 30ā€™s donā€™t have time for the trial and error, they have it all planned out. Before you get their number, you have to commit, before they visit you, they have to make sure you are willing to get married in 6 months.

Desperation is one of the biggest turnoffs ever. When you are not sure whether a woman likes you or she just likes the idea of marriage. Trying to avoid ā€˜time wastersā€™ is one of the main reasons there are a lot of single women. You see a woman leave her boyfriend of two years because heā€™s wasting her time, 3 years later heā€™s getting married and sheā€™s still single.

Hello bro.

I just want to say thank you for your support on this group and all other monikers who encouraged me to take this step.
Honorable mention - Pansophist who created the awareness that i cab apply for any visa and do it myself without using any agent.
I was of the opinion that someone can't get a visa especially US or canada without using agents but this thread with the help of other comments gave me the courage to push ahead and i got the visa last friday.
I wanted to test the water and weigh my own value so i took the step and test and Glory be to God, i have been give 5 years visitor's visa.

....................
VO: why do you want to visit US and which city are you going to?
Me: I work on the ship and will be on time off by that time, so want to visit the US for vacation.
VO: Where do you work?
Me: on ship
VO: Have you travelled out of nigeria for the past 5 years?
Me: I don't even work in Nigeria in the first place, i work outside the country 7/8 months out of a year. As a matter of fact, i just came back from Congo Kinshasha last saturday.
VO: How much do you earn per month?
Me: so so so $....
VO: Do you have Seaman discharge book as evidence that you are a sailor? employment contract paper? and attestation from company ?
Me: provided all evidence.
VO: Ohh, very nice. why don't you want to take your family along then? it will be nice if they follow you.
Me: i will but maybe later. They have been with me in Ghana but want to travel now alone.
VO: Welcome to US and enjoy your stay.
Me: Thank you ma.

From my observation, they want to be sure you have good travel history, have a good job and income and be sure you will come back and not disappear.
Close to 100 people ahead of me, only 3 of us where given visa.
At a point i was scared when i saw the denying rate but thank God for everything.

Congratulations bro.

How many of the 2.8m people on longterm sick have contributed upto that sum (aside taxes) to the government in their whole life? Meanwhile, dem no go gree us rest. Interesting thing is that many coughing up these sums are low-average earners. Folks dey struggle with no appreciation. We go survive and multiply.
