A foggy morning it was , the sun still drowsy , half-awake but its effect already being felt and the cold wind wrapped everything around like a revolving blanket… That’s how some of the greatest stories ever written begin. But what makes a great story? The readers get to decide that but here is a tale of perseverance , diligence and every virtue which is ascribed to the positive-minded.
What do you get when you have an eye for perfection, a near-fanatic devotion for detail and an unquenchable thirst for excellence in every endeavour all fine-tuned and crafted by years of experience? An engineer ? An astute politician? An instructor ? A devoted- yet- loving father and guardian? Hard to pick one , right? What if the afore-described alluring qualities cumulate in a man who, though curiously enigmatic, is as refreshingly clear like cool fluid spilling from a spring on a sunny April morning ? That man would be Engr. (Chief ) Benedict Ukpong.
Having transversed the length and breadth of the country from the hilly terrains of the federal capital territory to the chill, airy plains of Jos after being moulded in the spacious yet vegetated and serene plains of Urue-Offong/Oruko Local Government Area in Akwaibom State, he’s garnered the experience which comes with such varied inter-personal interactions with different persons from diverse socio-cultural and educational backgrounds. Not surprising that he handles different situations well and in real-time.
You’d agree that such amiable charisma blended with experience and grilled by the heat of constant public scrutiny makes a model public officer holder. One of the reasons Engr. ( Chief ) Benedict Ukpong was deemed deserving to serve the nation as one of her federal commissioners in the National Population Commission ( NPC ) after offering himself for the service of the good people of Akwaibom State by emerging as the Deputy Governorship candidate on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC) during the 2015 general election.
However , to keep an active mind functional , one needs to engage in recreational activities. Chief Ukpong is a nature lover. It isn’t unusual to find him taking a stroll at dawn or dusk when zephyrs make leaves on tree tops wave as birds chirp in chorus. Like ardent literati , he’s a bibliophile who believes in constantly acquiring and applying knowledge so you would likely find him flipping through the pages of a book. Again, still not shocking for a man who was nicknamed ‘lantern burner’ way back in high school ‘cause perusing pages of written words was – and still is – second nature to him. Of course , he places family values on a high pedestal as he spends time with loved ones and supports developmental strides in his community.
They say life is a journey and each journey has a story. Engr. ( Chief ) Benedict Ukpong’s is an ongoing one still being told with a every mile journeyed. Here is the story told , more are the stories untold.
