TV/MoviesKwese’s Satellite TV Closes Down Sets To Focus On Kwese Free Sports, iflix & Play by Ravon(op): 1:06pm On Nov 02, 2018
In order to maintain its position as a leader in broadcasting innovation in Africa, Econet Media has reviewed its business strategy and service offerings, to align them to changes in the global digital and satellite broadcasting sector, and growth in access to mobile and fixed broadband on the continent. The strategy review will see Africa’s leading multi-platform broadcast network focus on three core services; Kwesé Free Sports (KFS), Kwesé iflix and Kwesé Play.

In order to maintain its position as a leader in broadcasting innovation in Africa, Econet Media has reviewed its business strategy and service offerings, to align them with the changes in the global digital and satellite broadcasting sector, and growth in access to mobile and fixed broadband on the continent.

The strategy review will see Africa’s leading multiplatform broadcast network focusing on three core services; Kwesé Free Sports (KFS), Kwesé iflix and Kwesé Play.  KFS is Africa’s largest free-to-air TV service, Kwesé iflix is Africa’s leading mobile video-on-demand sports and entertainment platform while Kwesé Play is a leading-edge video streaming service with more than 200 sports, entertainment, kids and news channels including Red Bull TV, NBA, YouTube, TED and Bloomberg.

With increased focus on these three services, Econet Media will streamline its direct-to-home satellite television service. This will see the reduction of third-party channels available on the bouquet, as well as the removal of Kwesé branded sports (excluding KFS) and general entertainment channels. The broadcaster’s new bouquet will carry FTA, religious, and free news channels which will be available to viewers for a minimal fee, as the broadcaster will waive monthly subscription fees. Kwesé subscribers who have already paid their subscriptions for the month of November, or in advance, will receive a full refund.

Kwesé was launched at a time when the global pay television industry was in transition. Business models were evolving from traditional content rights linked to linear broadcast channels, to premium content rights moving towards digital media platforms.

Kwesé has built a satellite TV business with presence in 11 markets, a free-to-air business across 27 countries, delivered the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ across Africa to a network of 115 sub-license broadcasters across 37 countries – reaching over 200 million households, acquired a controlling stake in a leading mobile video-on-demand service, and launched its own OTT service Kwesé Play. The business has also managed to secure leading sports rights and general entertainment channels to build a compelling content offering across its platforms, making a significant shift in the continent’s complex and competitive media industry.

Having recognised the importance of carrying original local content, Econet Media will also establish its own content creation hub, Kwesé Studios. Through Kwesé Studios, Econet Media will invest in developing its own original programming and provide a platform for African producers, scriptwriters, actors and directors to tell authentic African stories on a pan-African broadcast network.

These changes are in keeping with Kwesé’s commitment to providing affordable premium content, maintaining an innovative approach to content delivery and being attuned to audience viewing and purchasing habits.

As a consequence of the revised business model, Econet Media is reviewing its operational structures across all markets where Kwesé TV has the presence which may result in changes to the company’s various business units.

Joe Hundah, Group President and Chief Executive of Econet Media, says the business’ repositioning is perfectly timed in response to market trends.

“We believe these changes will safeguard the future success of our business as we continue to make an indelible impact on Africa’s media industry. The revised business strategy will also ensure that Kwesé TV continues to remain competitive within the industry. Refocusing our business offering across markets is a strategic move which aligns our business to OTT and video-on-demand trends which present significant growth opportunities for Kwesé. This renewed focus on digital services will see us providing new compelling offers for our customer’s enjoyment.”

“Additionally, through the development of the Kwesé Studios content hub, Econet Media will now have a legitimate claim to being the home of African content, as we will now create a place where Africans can tell their own stories and shape their own narrative.”

“Kwesé’s entry into the market had a game-changing impact on the media industry. With these changes, we believe Kwesé will continue to positively disrupt the industry for the benefit of African consumers, as we continue to provide affordable premium content through digital media services.”

BusinessDaily Insight: How Competition Is Reshaping The Nigerian Beer Market by Ravon(op): 7:32pm On Oct 30, 2018
Earlier in the year, we highlighted that intense rivalry, following the entry of AB-InBev, and a new fixed rate charge on alcoholic beverages, which became effective in In Jun-18, were the factors to watch in the Nigeria beer market in 2018. Looking at the Q3-18 earnings, we note that increased competition has actually constrained price increases despite government levy on beer.

With the completion of its new plant in Shagamu, AB-InBev flooded the market with its regional premium, Trophy lager and simultaneously introduced its flagship premium beer, Budweiser, into the Nigerian market. This boosted supply, constrained volume growth and forced key competitors (Nigerian Breweries (NB) and Guinness), to hold-off plans to pass on the burden of the new fix charge on beer to consumers.

Accordingly, NB’s 9month revenue fell 6.5%y/y to N238.1bn while PAT tumbled 38.4% to N14.8bn. Notably, NB reported a negative operating profit of N3.9bn in Q3-18 amid volume pressures. Similarly, GUINNESS’s 3month revenue also weakened 3.3%y/y to N28.9bn on weaker volumes, although PAT recovered significantly due to improved finance cost. On the contrary, INTBREW sustained an aggressive q/q topline growth as its Q3-18 standalone revenue came in higher at N30.2bn, the highest in the last four quarters. Overall, we see further pressure on NB and GUINNESS’s numbers going forward.

TV/MoviesMultichoice May Be Forced To Cut Dstv Prices In 2019 by Ravon(op): 5:46pm On Oct 30, 2018
If international trends are anything to go by, MultiChoice will be faced with a difficult decision in 2019 – continue to hike DStv Premium prices and lose even more customers to Netflix, or cut prices and hope it can make a digital-only version of DStv work.

The impact of rising satellite and cable TV subscriptions – the equivalent of DStv Premium in the USA – has seen customers ditch their packages in droves overseas.

The ability to make this decision an easy one is thanks to Netflix and other streaming services like Amazon Prime Video, which offer massive catalogues of content at much lower prices than expensive cable and satellite TV.

According to data published by Variety, the number of people in the US who have cancelled pay-TV services will reach 33 million in 2018 – a 32.8% increase over 2017.

The report further stated that the high price of pay-TV is a big reason why this is happening, and the average pay-TV bill in the US was $100 per month.

In South Africa, the situation is not that different.

DStv Premium with the Access Fee is R899 per month, and hundreds of thousands of subscribers have dropped the service in recent years.

Netflix has also played a part locally, following its official launch in SA at the start of 2016. Even MultiChoice has admitted that Netflix is hurting its DStv Premium subscriber numbers.

And at R169 per month for the top Netflix package, it is easy to see why.

Big drops coming

The situation is only going to get worse for big cable and satellite TV players, according to international research.

While pay-TV numbers are dropping fast, streaming service numbers are booming.

In Netflix’s latest results, the company stated it signed up 6.96 million customers in the third quarter of 2018 – bringing its global total to 137.1 million.

What makes this number even more impressive is that people share their Netflix accounts or view as a family or group, which means the number of people actually watching Netflix is much higher.

At the same time, companies like MultiChoice continue to raise subscription prices to their services and show advertising during shows, which Netflix does not.

The amount of advertising on pay-TV packages has also increased in recent years, and Nielsen data shows that since 2009, advertisements shown per hour on cable channels have increased from 14:27 to 15:38 minutes.

The combination of adverts and increasing prices have resulted in the subscriber drops mentioned above – and will result in another 20 million people in the US “cutting the cord” by 2021 if the trend continues.

If this trend continues to flow into South Africa, DStv Premium as a satellite TV package faces incredibly challenging times.

Price cuts and streaming-only

These internal and external factors mean MultiChoice will have to change its path to fight the Netflix onslaught.

The company has, however, already put plans in place.

It launched Showmax, its own streaming service, before Netflix in South Africa, and before this unveiled its Catch Up video-on-demand service and Box Office for movies.

MultiChoice has also launched DStv Now, which lets users stream their DStv channels through supported apps or a web browser. Users must have a DStv satellite package for this to work, though.

The company said it will launch a streaming-only DStv subscription that does not require a dish or decoder, which is expected soon following the launch of Connected Video this year – a MultiChoice unit which will focus only on streaming services.

However, a DStv Premium streaming package is unlikely to succeed if the standard satellite fee of R809 per month is charged, according to user feedback.

According to a MyBroadband survey from 2018, the majority of users would only be willing to pay between R100 to R300 per month for a DStv Premium streaming package.

This is in line with the price of Netflix locally and would require a drastic price cut by MultiChoice.

MultiChoice told MyBroadband that it has not made a decision as yet about its DStv prices for the new financial year, starting 1 April 2019.

“Our approach is to offer our customers on our different DStv packages as much value for their money as possible,” it said.

DStv Premium – subscribers vs price

The graph below illustrates the rise of DStv Premium prices in South Africa since 2012, and the number of DStv Premium subscribers MultiChoice has reported since then.

CelebritiesSamsung Sues Its Own Brand Ambassador For Using An Iphone X On TV by Ravon(op): 12:33pm On Oct 25, 2018
- Ksenia Sobchak is the face of Samsung in Russia and is required to use Samsung-branded smartphones.
- However, Sobchak used an iPhone X during a TV spot, attempting to hide the contraband behind a piece of paper.
- Samsung is now suing the brand ambassador for the equivalent of $1.6 million.

It’s not unusual for brands to pay celebrities to use their products. Some brands even go so far as to pay celebrities mountains of cash to only use that company’s products, at least when they are in a public setting.

Samsung is one such company and has paid celebrities like musician Adam Levine and tennis star David Ferrer to use Samsung smartphones. However, both of those celebrities were caught using iPhones instead.

Apparently, Samsung is done messing around, as the latest Samsung brand ambassador to be caught using an iPhone is now getting sued by the company to the tune of 108 million Russian rubles (~$1.6 million), via The Mirror.

Russian journalist, politician, and reality TV star — and Russian president Vladimir Putin’s so-called “goddaughter” — Ksenia Sobchak is the face of Samsung in Russia. As such, she is paid to exclusively use Samsung electronics publicly. However, on a recent live television stint, Sobchak can clearly be seen using an iPhone — likely an iPhone X, although it’s hard to be 100 per cent certain.

Sobchak tried her best by using her fingers to hide the Apple logo and then using a piece of paper to hide it on the table:

To Samsung’s credit, the potential $1.6 million penalty isn’t for a first infraction: Sobchak has apparently been caught using an iPhone in public on multiple previous occasions.

AppleInsider speculates the $1.6 million penalties is actually more than Samsung is even paying her, which is pretty brutal.

However, it’s hard to feel sorry for anyone who makes millions from simply using one type of smartphone — and then messes it up. Seriously, I’m a diehard Android fanboy and I’ll use whatever Apple wants for millions of dollars. I’ll get an Apple logo tattoo. On my face.

FoodToday Is World Pasta Day: Here Are 7 Fun Facts About Pasta by Ravon(op): 11:53am On Oct 25, 2018
Every culture flaunts their varieties of pasta. With Twists, Macaroni, Eliche, Spaghetti we can say Happy World Pasta Day (October 25) in our own dishes.

PASTA IN NIGERIA

Flour Mill Nigeria established the first pasta plant in Nigeria. Several brands have also stepped into this space which has heightened competition. Others are Barilla and Mueller, all foreign brands that have helped to increase competition in the market.

Examples are:

- Dangote Spaghetti/Macaroni, manufactured by Dangote  Group,
- Honeywell Spaghetti/Macaroni, produced  by Honeywell Nigeria Plc
- Power Spaghetti from Pure  Flour  Mills Limited
- Golden Penny Spaghetti/Macaroni,  manufactured by Golden Penny Foods
- Crown  Spaghetti/Macaroni, produced by Crown Flour Mills
- Bua Spaghetti/Macaroni from  Bua Group

Here’s some food for thought to share with your friends and family next time you tuck into a bowl of spaghetti...

1. PASTA ISN’T ORIGINALLY FROM ITALY – OR IS IT?

Italy and pasta are synonymous, so it might come as a surprise to discover the Italians might not have invented it. According to Food Network Canada, the Chinese have been eating noodles since as early as 5000BC.

Many people credit the famed Italian explorer Marco Polo for having brought pasta to Italy from China in the 13th century. However, the International Pasta Organisation reckons this is a myth based on the plot of a popular movie from the 1930s. They say pasta dates to Italy’s ancient Etruscan civilisations and Sicilians had been making it for over two centuries before Polo returned from his travels to the Far East.

2. THERE ARE OVER 600 PASTA SHAPES

That’s according to America’s National Pasta Association. Here are some shapes you probably didn’t know existed: Gigli (resembles a bell-shaped flower), rotelle (wagon wheels), mafaldine (ribbon-shaped) and Anelli (thin circles).

3. THE NAMES OF MANY PASTA SHAPES ARE PRETTY UNAPPETISING

Pasta names might sound charming in Italian but they lose some of their appeals when directly translated into English. The word “pasta” itself literally means “paste”. “Linguine” means “little tongues, “orecchiette” is “little ears” and “vermicelli” translates as “little worms” – try not to think about that when forking some into your mouth.

4. THE WORLD’S LARGEST BOWL OF PASTA WEIGHED 7,900KG

The Guinness World Record for the largest bowl of pasta was set in Poland in 2015. it took 40 chefs over 19 hours to cook and prepare it.

5. THE MEN BEHIND FATTI’S & MONI’S WERE RIVALS AT FIRST

“Fatti’s & Moni’s is a part of South Africa’s Italian heritage but the two names didn’t always live so happily side by side,” explains the brand’s website.

In 1896, Luigi Fatti opened a small Joburg grocery store selling Italian foodstuffs. A decade later, brothers Pietro and Giacomo Moni set up a similar shop.

When World War 1 made it difficult to import goods from Italy, the Moni brothers decided to start making their own pasta. This was the start of a fierce rivalry between the two businesses which lasted until 1925 when a “peace treaty” was signed and they merged to become the United Macaroni Company.

This was renamed Fatti’s & Moni’s in 1982 and today it’s owned by Tiger Brands.

6. GORDON RAMSAY HOLDS A PASTA WORLD RECORD

In 2017, the British celebrity chef set a new Guinness World Record for the longest pasta sheet rolled in 60 seconds – and he caught it all on camera for an episode of his show The F-Word. The sheet he produced was 144.78cm long.

7. SUNDAY TIMES FOOD’S MOST POPULAR ONLINE RECIPE IS A PASTA DISH

The baked macaroni cheese from Nikki Werner and Brandon de Kock’s award-winning cookbook Cook. Better. is the recipe that has got the most clicks on our website over the past couple of years.

For a first timer leaving the island and going to the mainland, sometimes The Bridge is your route. Now some times it is deceiving clear at the beginning then you meet up with the clog later or in the middle or the tail end. So I wanna ask, how long does it take you to cross the bridge particularly on a weekday evening (between 5-7pm).
